If you spend a couple hours on the web you will read numerous comments that it takes poor pictures in dim light. This is not true. The problem is that the camera is so feature packed, a person who has not studied the camera manual for a few hours does not know how to set the camera for low light. It takes stunning pictures at low light levels. The autofocus at dim light level while in a zoomed position is problematic.
I have only had this wonderful camera for two weeks, and still don't know how to use all the features. The mechanical image stabilization is wonderful. On a cruise ship in New York, while passing the statue of liberty, the ship was vibrating under acceleration, and there was a high wind. It was impossible to hold the camera steady, and you could see it shaking. The pictures surprisingly came out very clear at the 5 mpx setting at full zoom. The best feature of the great little camera is the panoramic mode. With the Olympus picture card inserted, the panoramic mode is operable on the P setting. You take the left picture, and it shows up in a preview with a line. You line this up with the next center shot in the viewfinder, or on the big screen, and the next image does the same for the right shot. With practice you can take stunning panoramas with no tripod. I made several mistakes with lining up images, and made bad shots, but you can instantly erase the image and try again. After a couple hours of practice I was able to take great panoramas almost on every shot. The most stunning shots are on full 24mm equivelent wide angle. I reccomend some kind of tripod for extended telephoto panoramas. Another fun use is using the panoramic mode in the vertical setting. Wide angle pictues of the entire building standing across the street come out beatifully with the cameras stitching software. I can't wait to purchase an 8.5 inch roll of photo printing paper so I can print my own 8.5 X 24 inch panoramic prints on my HP Photosmart printer.
I purchased the lens adaptor and Olympus 1.7 telephoto lens with the camera from B&H. It is quite large, but has stunning color. The telephoto range is incredible with this lens. I bought a 3X Tokina aftermarket lens with adaptor and you can take closeups of the moon. This lens has some blue chroma abberations, but as a specialty lens, it is incredible. With the cameras double exposure "fireworks" setting you can take fantastic double exposure shots with quick lens changes between shots. At 1600mm equivalent on a tripod, the camera takes portrait shots of people a block away with a great blurred background.
Unfortuneately, the only way to use filter on the camera is with a lens adaptor tube. With the tube on you have to be in the 3/4 to full zoom setting so you don't get the tube in the picture. No filters for wide angle shots. I guess you could go to the trouble of cheating by purchasing gel filters, and cutting perfect circles of the diamerer of the lens, and then super carefully taping them the front edge of the lens housing.
I am an expert in all phases of film camera photography, but I still need to study the camera manual for a couple weeks to understand, and use all the advanced features of the camera. Digital photography demands that you have a complete understanding of the electronics and the settings that are not as intuitive as old film cameras before you are able to take great shots. The reason for the mixed reviews of this camera is that this is not the best camera for people who want a point and shoot because it has more setting than a good PDA. It is easy to take blurry pictures when you have the camera in the wrong mode.
When you stand next to people with full size pro DSLR's you will get a laugh, due to it looks like an SLR, but is about 1/3 the size. A full set of equipment fit in a smaller camera bag, and you can carry it around for ten hours in a backpack without a struggle. It is the best setup for bird photography around.
The only gripe, is that the SP570UZ eats four AA batteries like candy. You need to purchase a charger, and two or three sets of nicads with the camera to keep you going for a few hours. I couldn't understand why the salesman was trying to sell me a battery charger with the camera and spare batteries, but he was right with every recommended option. I am glad I purchased the optional camera insurance. I was using it in an underwater bag pack snorkeling in the ocean, and was very nervous about destroying the camera. It worked perfectly, but I felt better having the camera repair/replacement insurance B&H sold me. I can't wait for a heavy plastic underwater housing to be available for this model. It takes great underwater pics in the auto mode. I even used the cameras onboard little flash underwater with no problems. A cool setup. There is extensive onboard image processing and corrections, and they reccomend buying the optional power cord for doing indoor image processing.
After purching the camera fro B&H, I got delivery a couple days later. In the first hour with the camera, I took thirty pictures of my dogs, and used the onboard processing features, and published several 12 month calenders in my printer with the dog pictures in the second hour. The camera also publishes greeting cards, and invitations. Its a lot of fun. I have not used the video feature yet, but I bought three 2mb picture cards, so I am ready to shoot a little film in the camera. The Olympus picture processing software is free, but you have to pay for the upgrade to process videos, and make movies. I downloaded it, and I am ready to start making little films in my computer. I have made stunning, vivid portraits on my printer, and they looks as good as any DSLR. It is much easier to take great images easier with a full sized camera, but try backpacking a full sized set of equipment. I am very satisfied with the SP570UZ, even though you must study the book to use it effeciently. I think pro photographers gave the camera mixed reviews because they never studied the manual, and couldn't use the camera to its potential. Buy it. Its great!

I bought this camera for its light weight and 20X zoom. I envisioned taking wildlife photographs while hiking. I also wanted to photograph my grandchildren. The long shutter lag (even when pre-focused with half shutter release) makes taking anything but posed portraits and still landscapes questionable. The slow digital zoom and lack of manual focus make quick shooting of birds impossible. This is a fine camera for snapshots of still and posed images, but it is not an SLR. I am sending this camera back and getting another lens for my Canon 20D. I'll put up with the extra weight.

Great camera for travel. Very nice zoom and controls are easy to use and understand. Image quality degrade on the long end of the zoom, but overall a great non-dslr camera.

Comments about Olympus SP-570 UZ Digital Camera (Black):
Overall, I like the camera. I have not used much yet, but I have been getting familiar with it. I wanted an advance Point & Shot that would be close to an SLR. I like the feel of the camera, and most of all the picture quality. I like manual controls over menu controls. Olympus did a good job balancing the two. I was able to figure out most of the controls and modes without the manual. The weakness of all these cameras is battery life. This one does pretty well, I recommend have extra batteries handy.
The ring on the lens has two function depending on the mode. In auto focus mode, the ring controls the zoom. In manual mode, the ring controls the focus, and the zoom is controlled by two buttons on the back of the camera. I would like both controls on the lens, but it's not an SLR.
I will update my review after I use it some more.

I use this product for recreational photography and for photos of all our members during our monthly wine club tastings. You can not beat the 20X zoom on this camera and it is really nice to be able to zoom using the manual ring, instead of the switches/toggles on many cameras. It did not take any time at all to get use to this feature.I have only had the camera a few weeks now, so have not scratched the surface on the learning curve area. And I don't think anyone should fault this camera until they have had it long enough to read the users manual (what a concept - reading the manual). This camera has so many features it just boggles the mind. This is my second Oly camera (C-750 previously), which I still like as well, but it did not have a large enough LCD screen and only had a 10X zoom. However, the SP570UZ has a 2.7" LCD which is very bright and clear for my purposes. For around [$], in my humble opinion, you won't get a better bang for your buck. No it is not a SLR, but very close, and you don't have to spend all that money for additional lenses.

Comments about Olympus SP-570 UZ Digital Camera (Black):
Six years ago I upgraded my trusty 35mm SLR to an Olympus C4040 digital point and shoot and never looked back. This time around, I was looking for a new upgrade and after much comparison shopping purchased the Olympus SP570UZ from B&H. The main features that sold me on this camera were the top-rated picture quality, wide zoom range, and manual controls.
My wife and I enjoy the extremely wide zoom range and improved movie modes of the SP570UZ. The shutter lag is better and the image stabilizer will be good for the long telephoto shots. I like the zoom ring feature although it is motorized like most other point-and-shoot zooms and could have been implemented with a toggle. The manual focus will be helpful for those rare shots when the camera can't figure out where to focus. No matter which control the MF is set to (zoom ring, control knob, or the left-right buttons), the focus action is quite slow.
I was hoping the digital processor would make up for the f/2.8 lens but it didn't. My older Olympus C4040 has an f/1.8 lens that takes much better low-light pictures and assures its place will stay in our camera bag. Apparently the camera manufacturers have to sacrifice their lowest f/stop for zoom range and the market these days is for zoom range. However, I hope someone will eventually offer a sub f/2 zoom lens as it really makes the difference for shots taken at school events in the gym, caves, night, etc. where the subject is out of range of the flash.
I also tried the lens barrel adapter and a uv filter, which I had hoped to leave on the camera full time in place of the lens cap. Unfortunately, for half the zoom range your view is obstructed by the barrel so I returned them. Otherwise, the barrel is useful (required) for the telephoto lens option.
The alternative upgrade camera would have been a digital SLR, but we didn't want the additional bulk. Besides, to get an f/1.8 lens we'd have to settle for a fixed or low zoom ratio. To get the higher zoom ratio, we'd have to settle for a higher f/stop and a large lens.
Overall the SP570UZ is light, easy to use, versatile, and takes very good pictures. I didn't take away stars for the above issues because they're part of the overall compromise that makes this an outstanding camera.

Have had the camera for about 2 weeks now and am still getting to know it. Like one reviewer stated this camera has so many options that you'll need to spend a fair amount of time with the owners manual to use it to its fullest potential. So far it hasn't disappointed me. I love the manual focus ring, beats a button any day. It takes excellent pictures.

Before buying the Olympus I downloaded and read the owner's manual, and I read several reviews. I am pleased with my selection. I like the control allowed by the servo zoom ring, contrary to what some of the reviewers said. I also like the ability to use the full zoom hand held. I find the menus to be well organized, again contrary to what some reviews said.

Comments about Olympus SP-570 UZ Digital Camera (Black):
I have only had this camera for 2 - 3 weeks, and have only shot some 200 pictures. I mostly do nature / landscapes / cityscapes and I am very pleased with ALL aspects of this camera. Color rendition is excellent, sharpness is outstanding and it is VERY easy to use, very intuitive. It also appears to be very well built. I must add that this is my first digital camera, and it may not completely replace my film camera, a fully manual Nikon. BUT, I do a lot of hiking and lugging around about 5 kg worth of lenses vs. a 0.5 kg package that gives me at least the same photographic possibilities, if not a lot more, is a no-brainer (and gives me more room for water etc..).
I have always been a big Nikon & Olympus fan, and it was a tough choice between this camera and the Coolpix P80. I ended up deciding for this one because of the slightly greater zoom range, the fact that it uses regular batteries, and the fact that it can record RAW images. I am happy with the decision.
Don't believe anything you may read about long lag/recording times. They are just fine.

I purchased the SP-570 UZ shortly before a vacation to Colorado and Utah, and was very glad I did. This camera let me take spectacular pictures--its super zoom is fantastic--great for shooting birds etc., has so many different features and modes, and lets you control the aperture, shutter speed and more to get the perfect picture. It's a great travel camera, and there's absolutely no shutter lag.The quality of the pictures is superb. Even though I'm a photography novice, it's the best camera for me and for any photographer on any level. I love this camera!!

I bought this camera both for my personal use, as well as for my interior decorating business. For my business, I often need a wide-angle lens to photograph smaller rooms. I had tried the Olympus E510 and found myself a bit clumsy with it, occasionally hitting one of the many small buttons on the back of that camera. This camera gives me all the flexibility I need for my work, along with the capture speed I often need for family photography. And, as I have come to expect from Olympus, the image quality is excellent.
