Snap in the cable to your camcorder and then clip the control to the handle of your fluid head tripod and you are ready to shoot great video. Hand held shots generally suffer from camera shake, especially at the telephoto end. Even with image stabilization those long shots are going to be shaky. Even with a tripod you will get shake when you manipulate the zoom control or hit the record button. With the remote commander those controls are at the end of a cable where the shake is removed. Also, the zoom control operates in a more fluid fashion with the remote.

The controller is small, easy to use, and very straight forward in what it does. It clips on the handle of most tripods. The On/Off switch is on the side. The rest of the buttons are aligned vertically. The top button takes pictures. The center toggle pans and zooms the video camera. The harder you push the toggle, the faster it pans or zooms. The bottom button starts and stops recording. The remote is small and the buttons close together. I have large hands and have accidently shut off the video recording numerous times. This has caused me to use two hands, one to control the tripod handle and the finger on the opposite hand to control the pan and zoom functions. That is still better than having a hand on top of the camera jiggling it around. Sony should either offset the record button or make the remote slightly longer to give more room between the buttons.

I mount my Camera on a monopod and shoot over obsticals in front of me. This remote will help get the shot that I want. I like the quality of the product. The remote has a cord that allows me to work with my camera well above me. So far I haven't encountered anything I don't like about it.

It's a good accessory if you are just trying to get your controls off camera, but don't need multi-levels of zoom speed (especially the slowest speed). I bought if for my HDR-XR520V. I record a lot of choir groups and when I need to use zoom, I like to use the slowest speed possible for smooth camera work. It just isn't possible with this remote. It does have a slow speed, but its not as slow as the built-in control, so there is a noticable jump in video when beginning a zoom. A friend purchased a Sony tripod with built in zoom controls and it works much better (however the head is not as fluid as my Manfrotto).

Comments about Sony Remote Commander (Silver):
I have been using a Sony HD HandyCam to capture my son's hockey games; it is a challenging shoot for a number reasons (e.g. lighting of indoor rinks, fast game with lots of movement, etc.) but not being able to smoothly zoom as the game goes to the far side of the ice, or occasionally zoom on specific players, made my best attempts less than optimal. Using the remote control that comes with the HandyCam only works while in front of the unit (in line of the infra-red sensors), so that wasn't a viable option as I was shooting from behind the camera. Having to use the zoom button on the unit, or the screen-based zoom, caused wiggles and jars, to say nothing of the delay of framing the shot. The remote commander, clipped to my tripod's handle, allows me to smoothly pan and simultaneous zoom in or out keeping the play in frame. Also, using the remote commander to start and stop shooting, and to turn the unit off to save batteries, all from the handle, are nice features.
Overall, a very good product, and I would recommend it to those doing similar shoots.

Comments about Sony Remote Commander (Silver):
I purchase it because I put camera on a monopod and that made it unnatural to use the strap. With this wired remote I find all the usually used buttos logically placed toghether and since the built in clip makes it a snap to put on or remove, I use it ALL the time. These remotes should be included.. As they are incredibly more usefull than a wireless remote that only works from the front of the camera.. Not much use if you are the camera person is it?

Comments about Sony Remote Commander (Silver):
I like the small size which is appropriate to the size of the Handycam. I like the fact that you have a fast and slow zoom but I miss the ability to do any finer control over the speed of the zooms. I have much better control with my Varizoom Pro LANC controller but that controller itself is about as big as the Handycam. So there is a tradeoff between size and control. The price is also right and is a lot cheaper than my Varizoom Pro.

The Remote Commander allows you to operate your HandyCam from in front of the lens instead of having to go off camera and fumble around with "Record", "Zooming" etc.
Enjoy!

I use the remote with my CX550, makes it easier to use on a tripod and more importantly it is now much easier to turn the camera on & off between takes. The power button on the CX550 is a shocker.

I use this with my Sony DCR-SR68 when I use my tripod. No more shaking the camera when changing the settings, I love it. The clip that holds it on the handle needs to be a little stronger, it will move when using it.

Comments about Sony Remote Commander (Silver):
This has become an essential tool for filming basketball games where I want to zoom frequently, even as I pan and tilt.
I initially was attracted to the Sony tripods with the built in remotes in their grips. But, having inspected those tripods at the B&H Superstore, I was not impressed by their "fluid" heads. I believe the Sony Remote Commander mounted on the grip handle of a true fluid head and on a higher quality tripod is a superior package for filming games.
You can also position the remote on the tripod legs or hold it in your hand, if you so choose.
