You may assume that because this is a low-cost zoom lens it is inferior to other Pentax lenses. In fact, unless you're a pro who needs fast apertures (f/2.8 or more) for shooting in low light or who routinely makes prints larger than 11x14 inches, you'd be hard-pressed to see any significant difference in photo quality between this and Pentax's more expensive zooms. Its only real drawbacks are light falloff in the corners at 18mm and moderately high chromatic aberration (color fringing) at focal lengths below 35mm. Both can be corrected in Photoshop if you should so choose. Even though I own several of Pentax's best, most expensive primes, I bought this just for the sake of having a small, light, versatile, yet capable lens to use for casual occasions.

Clear images but not very bright
f:5.6 @ 55 is just too dark for many situations. Would be great if f:3.5 was over the full range

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II Autofocus Lens for Digital SLR:
Pentax has indeed created a wonderful to use and relatively decent quality kit lens to include with its DSLRs. Although not well suited for low light, the autofocus is fast and accurate in most situations.
I was also surprised at this lens' ability to get nice and close to objects to achieve macro-like shots. A decent walk around lens, I would recommend to anyone in need of general use optics. Works well on my K20d.

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II Autofocus Lens for Digital SLR:
This lens is much sharper on my K10D than my older Pentax film lenses. Also like the close focusing, plus the window in the lens shade that allows the rotation of circular filters without removing the lens shade.

Crystal clear photos, great in low light, have a 5 year old so I use it almost daily. Can't wait to upgrade my other lenses - will use B&H again for all my Pentax needs, for sure!

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II Autofocus Lens for Digital SLR:
Bought in a hurry after an accident with an old Pentax lens; using with a K110D. Focuses quickly and very sharp. Light compared with an old Pentax, of course, and hard to tell yet how rugged it is. Very satisfied with it so far; price seemed very reasonable.

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II Autofocus Lens for Digital SLR:
I've used both renditions of this Pentax kit lens. They both are well built, better than average quality kit lens. Purely based on a subjective view, this mod II version seems too have a little sharper, brighter image on the pics I've shot with it.

I upgraded to the Mark II version of this lens when I purchased the K200D. The pictures are crisp. The colors are great. The focusing is fast. It is a great lens to leave on the camera 80% of the time!
