The Pentax PH-RBK 77mm Lens Hood is the dedicated lens hood for the Pentax SMCP-DA* 200mm f/2.8 ED (IF) SDM and 300mm f/4.0 ED (IF) lenses. Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lenses they were designed for.
Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

I believe in lens hoods--both for IQ and to protect the lens. Although I prefer the old-style built-in ones, this one is a cut above today's generic plastic variety and, most importantly, it's specifically designed for the DA*300mm.
