I shoot film almost exclusively,well..until now
i actually got the camera free when i finally went macro hardcore and bought an MP-E 65mm along with the dedicated(2 flash)lighting systems
well they handed me the box with a sort of tremor in their hands, like i would throw it away in disgust,i said thanks(great,a full auto point and shoot..i ll give it to my mom) and walked away thinking about my new macro system
completely elated by the lens and also frustrated(at myself) for not being able to use it at it's full potential i forgot about the little canon until maybe a week later.but one day i rmembered and opened the box
as i am speaking i am still shooting with the 32mb card as i thought that canons use cf cards(have those around) and i didn't have the time to buy a bigger card
what can i say,i will start with the size..or lack of..the camera is light and easy to carry around in your coat pocket..i like the fact that the heavy AA 's are in the grip side so there s a nice solid feel, what i don't like is the slippery grip,a better(and less shiny)choice of materials would have beed better, the camera itself is really pretty and it feels solid,,
the lens rattles and creeks like crazy when it focuses but it does the job..reminds me of a canon 50 1,8
strong diffractions color aberations moire etc at wide(why wide..expecting tele but not wide) BUT mostly at the corner of the frame otherwise pretty good coating and general image quality(a bit hard on the reds/blue but easily corrected)
the lens IS is really an unexpected surprise at such a cheap camera..and so are the FULL manual controls ..if you want to start learning photography and are at a tight budget...this is the camera to have..great for experimenting with exposures aperture
i recomend using the camera in AV priority at f8 and apropiate iso..the results are much better
the lcd(kind of a new thing for me.)is really good..light years ahead of my only other digital,a canon 5d also the viewfinder is nice..i mostly use that because of habit
i understand that this is a budget camera but including a flash mount would make things a lot more interesting
also i don't like the placement of the tripod thread..it s very hard to find a compact tripod that will suport it and well..why not align it with the lens..makes no sense
the biggest useful novelty for me is face detection...i am a 40 year old photographer but i must say that this feature is probably the most usefull, apart form is and manual controls...it makes correct exposures of faces a breeze to do..i think that it would do a quicker/better job on an informal group portrait than my canon 1v
in conclusion i would like to reccomend this camera..it's the cheapeest way to effectively learn photography

- Flash pictures are not uniformly illuminated.
-Color in auto setting is a bit washed out.
+Good battery life.
-Fair low light performance, but not grainy; some artifacts from bright lights.
+Pocket size, large enough for stable shooting, but the case that came in the accessory package is overly bulky.

Comments about Canon PowerShot A590 IS Digital Camera:
I used this camera for my digital photography class. I didn't have my own camera, so of course I had to borrow one from my teacher and I ended up with the Canon A590. I was pretty lucky! He had other A-series models but none of them had manual focus or manual exposure modes. I put that manual focus to good use, and I really love the camera just for that.
The only thing I could say I disliked about the camera is that it eats up batteries pretty quickly. Other than that, this is a pretty nice camera despite the small price tag!

I use this camera everyday and take it everywhere I go THis camer is so great I have had a stroke and my hands are not so good it does not blur the image when I shake on Auto the quality is great of the picture and videos the card it came with was to small so I got another card no big deal I have drop this camera 7 times on accident and it stil works the same. I am sad Canon discontinued this model. I would like to get another one because this one has almost bite the dust but for using it ever day I guess it should. I love the night snap shot setting I can take pics i they dark. Red eye correction is great I Love My Camera and I have had it over a year now.
THe only thing is do not use normal batteries on this camera is my suggestion you get rechargeable energizer batters and then your all set. I LOVE THIS CAMERA PLEASE START MAKING IT AGAIN

Comments about Canon PowerShot A590 IS Digital Camera:
I really like this camera, with just a couple of drawbacks.
One, it comes with a VERY small memory card. (32 mb) I didn't realize this until I was taking pictures at my son's graduation, and suddenly my memory card was full. I had to either delete pictures, or make them smaller to make room for other pictures I wanted to take, which was very frustrating. At least larger memory cards are pretty cheap!
Two, I have not figured out an easy way to delete all of the pictures on the memory card after I download them to my computer. I have had to delete them one at a time from the camera, which is time consuming and frustrating. If there is an easier way to delete them all, I haven't figured it out yet, and it's not in the user guide.
Overall, however, I am very happy with this camera, and would definitely buy it again. Some reviewers have complained about the battery life, but I am thrilled that it takes AA batteries, which are cheap and easy to come by! My last camera had specialized rechargable batteries, and when my charging dock, and therefore my batteries, died, there was no way to get to the pictures still on my camera, which had no memory card. I would have been forced to buy a new charging dock & batteries, which would have cost me more than this new camera did! So overall, I am very satisfied.

This camera has features usually found only in much more expensive models. If you are reading this review, you already know what they are, so I won't bother listing them.
What I will tell you is that the photos come out crisp and clear. The colors are exceptional for a camera in this price range. The features all work as claimed and the battery life is surprisingly good.
You could spend alot more and end up with camera half as good as the PowerShot A590 IS. I challenge anyone to find a better camera for the price.

Comments about Canon PowerShot A590 IS Digital Camera:
My youngest boy is taking a photography class as an elective subject in school and he needed a digital camera. I have an older Sony Mavica that I was going to give him but I reconsidered when I was dusting it off. I want for his initial experiences with photography to be more in tune with today's techniques and equipment, so I bought him the little Canon P&S here. He's enjoying himself, so we're on the right track.

Comments about Canon PowerShot A590 IS Digital Camera:
I usually prefer to shoot with my DSLR, however, there are time when I need an inexpensive camera to carry around with me (skiing, sport outings, etc). I chose the A590 because of its flexibility (manual exposure) and decent image quality.
So far I've been mildly impressed. Indoor shots are still a challenge but, given adequate light, I have obtained some great results. The videos are great as well.

A friend of mine had an earlier model of this camera and I loved it so I searched online and saw it on the B&H website (for way cheaper than anywhere else). For the price the camera is excellent. It has tons of cool features and I love the design. I was thinking of paying more for a skinnier model to fit better in my pocket but I actually love that this camera is slightly thicker because it is easier for me to hold when taking pictures....I actually am prone to dropping things. I bought this camera for my girlfriend because she likes to take pictures and can do so when I'm out and about with my DSLR. The best thing about is probably the image quality outdoors, daytime or with decent lighting. Unfortunately, it's not the greatest in low light situations, but which camera is?

Comments about Canon PowerShot A590 IS Digital Camera:
Compared to all the cameras on the market, the 590IS would not have so many stars; however, comparing it to other cameras in its price range it has a unique set of features. See "Pros"
So far, I have used the camera for indoor "snapshots" of attractive women and hardworking men as well as night pictures of our friendly raccoon. The optical viewfinder is larger than the newer model of the same camera, and has been indispensable for both. The controls can be operated by large hands with rather thick fingers. In my view, the aperature priority and shutter priority settings are neccessary for most non-standard shots.
The principal drawbacks are:
1. A two step automatic exposure (lock then shoot);
2. No external TTL flash control.
I bought this camera from B&H in Febuary 2009, about a year after its introduction, for about $110. So far it has added weight to my theory that if one can be satisfied with the cutting edge technology 365 days ago, one can save about 50% off the initial market price.
I suggest that anyone in the market for any camera read the operating instructions online before making a final decision. This helps prevent the buyer's remorse when learning of unadvertised limitations only after purchase.
Good luck.

I have a DSLR Canon and I needed a small camera for those times when it's not convenient to carry around my DSLR. It has many great features including the option of allowing you to manually control both time and or aperture, a feature most point and shoot cameras don't have. . . this is important to me. It's not tiny or slim but it's small enough to carry around comfortably. Battery life is pretty good! Picture quality is great. Pictures will look a bit grainy at 400 ISO but still decent. Overall, a great little camera for the value!
