The Nikon Coolpix S600 Digital Camera packs high performance and advanced functions into an ultra-compact body. The S600 boasts 10 effective megapixels of sharp resolution, and a 4x Wide Angle Zoom-NIKKOR lens with an equivalent focal length of 28 - 112mm (in 35mm terms). Plus the lens incorporates Nikon's acclaimed Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) Image Stabilization, along with a Sensitivity equivalent to ISO 3200 to ensure that your photos will always look great - regardless of lighting conditions or subject movement. Furthermore the S600 is a high performance camera, boasting extraordinary speed with a start up time of just 0.7 seconds. Shutter response and autofocus speeds are also quick and responsive, ensuring that the camera is always ready to go. And all of these features are mediated by Nikon's innovative EXPEED image processing system which provides enhanced noise reduction and an improved signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio.
The Nikon S600 incorporates Nikon's user-friendly imaging innovations known as Nikon In-Camera Innovations. These include In-Camera Red-Eye Fix which automatically detects and corrects red eye, a common condition that occurs in flash photography, D-Lighting which compensates for excessive backlight or insufficient flash in images, and Face Priority AF which automatically finds and focuses on up to 12 people's faces within one frame, ensuring clear, crisp portraits. The S600 also includes Nikon's Coolpix Software Suite for organizing, editing and sharing your photos.
For capturing action shots or fast moving kids, the S600 adds an Active Child Mode to the camera's scene modes. This feature allows the user to select and frame his or her subject prior to shooting. If the subject moves, the camera will track and focus on the moving subject as you shoot for faster, more reassuring operation and sharper results. Additionally, the S600 features a Pastel Mode, which produces images with a beautiful watercolor effect.
The Coolpix S600 has a bright, high resolution 2.7-inch LCD monitor with an anti-reflective coating and a wide viewing angle, thereby easing the composition and viewing of photos even in direct sunlight. The quality-crafted aluminum body has a streamlined profile and a slim, ergonomic design that style-conscious photographers will love. The S600 is compatible with SDHC cards and utilizes the compact EN-EL10 rechargeable Li-ion battery so you'll have plenty of power for a day of picture taking.

I bought this camera for my wife, and she love it because is compact, has a big and bright display, enough zoom (4x) and the lens at 28mm (35mm eqv.) is very good for family portraits and shooting wide. The video capability is very good too.
I have two cons, one is the lag time, I do not know if it is because I am used to shot with SLRs, but sometimes you can miss a particular gesture of your kid. The second one, is that the camera structure is good but not the strongest. Be careful with it.

Balancing size features and cost is not an easy task. Considering the size of the camera, the images are reasonably good. Despite the large 10 mega pixels the images tend to be soft and noisy. I had expected more from Nikon. The strength of this camera is it higher accuracy of skin tones and the 4x wide angle 28 equivalent lens. The small size is a plus but would sacrifice for better image quality and a 5x wide angle lens. My two previous sony cameras created sharper overall images, but they lacked depth in skin tones which very often appeared dithered.
The low light focusing is good, much better than the nikon P80 that i returned for poor focusing issues in room light and dusk conditions. Face detection gets lost occasionally in room light conditions. Shutter lag seems about average and flash time is acceptable for this type of camera.
Navigating the menu is about average. Not entirely intuitive at first. The real nuisance with this camera is quickly returning to shooting while in an adjustment or viewing mode. Depressing the shutter will not return you to shooting mode when in the middle of viewing stored images or making changes to settings. One needs to back navigate the menu a little. I guess the intent was to insure settings were executed correctly. However, when you have kids around or the action is happening and need to take a shot quick and you haven't mastered the menu sequence you will likely miss your shot. A bad thing for infrequent users who are not proficient with navigating the controls.
The rotary selector is a neat feature which allows you to scroll through pix and menus by rotating the dial and works well. For me however the small size of the dial or perhaps the small size of the center "okay" button, frequently cause me to miss the okay button, hitting the up or down arrows if i am not extremely careful. Raising or enlarging the okay button would eliminate that problem. A standard mini usb would have saved on yet another chord requirement.

Comments about Nikon Coolpix S600 Digital Camera (Slate Black):
I use the camera for indoor and out door family photos and scenere. I also use it at work maybe once a month for up cloose shots of hardware. The video is just a novelty for me.
Images are very clear, face detection and image stabilization work very well. 99% of the shotsw are great in normal lighting. Like all cameras you need to play with the settings in low light.
Good form and feel especially with the Slate Black.
Highly recommended.
One feature I'd like to have is bluetooth or other wireless capability to eliminate downloading gear.

Comments about Nikon Coolpix S600 Digital Camera (Slate Black):
I bought this to shoot my daughters wedding.
I was amazed at how versatile it is.
After many, many years of 35mm and 120, I bought an Olympus digital P&S. It was "OK" but not great.
This camera was a real joy. They have made wonderful advances in the onboard computer.
Not just in the things it will do for you but in the options you have in overriding the preset definitions.
I am a little disappointed that the battery doesn't last longer w/o recharging.
And the size is a pro and a con.
It's is so small and light that you can pretty much have it with you all the time.
On the other hand, it is so small and light that I have to keep double checking that I haven't lost it and the controls are a bit on the small side.

Comments about Nikon Coolpix S600 Digital Camera (Slate Black):
For a fast, easy to use, and always available camera I find the NikonS600 perfect. It is noisy at very high ISO's but for most purposes it does a first rate job. It is versatile, quick to set up and produces excellent results. It fits a shirt pocket so is easily at hand. The menu system is straight forward and after a few uses I found it quite simple and logical.
There are no significant problems for routine use.

Comments about Nikon Coolpix S600 Digital Camera (Slate Black):
We bought 20 of these for a research project based on the price and pixel count. Generally it performs well, but there are some shortfalls.
*The LCD is difficult to see in the sun - may be a universal problem
*The camera sometimes won't "take" a photo - no explination given.
*The zoom is difficult to use - moves in what seem to be pre-set focal lengths - like 28mm, 50mm, 100mm. Difficult to get in between.
*Users often turn the camera off by pressing the on-off button when they attempted to press the shutter.
*Camera is very small = easy to carry in a shirt pocket. But the size makes it easy to misplace.
*Images are OK, best to use the highest quality setting to lessen noise in the shodows.
Generally I like the camera. I personally found it easy to use the to carry. The flash is great.

S600 replaced 3 year old coolpix. Old model had bad door for battery slot, S600 major correction. View screen upgraded, VR lenses great on dink cameras for 35MM hands. Used at Grand Canyon on tripod for moonrise, flash off, good slow exposure.
Not a D200, but perfect for candid shots. Excellent lag time for quick candid people photos.

I got this camera to use on films as a script supervisor.
It works well and quickly and takes good pictures.
It's a good size and has a nice sized screen.
It's light with a sleek design.
Works great with iPhoto.
I wish I could find a good case for it. I like to keep it in my pocket and the cases I've found are too big for that.
The coating on one side chipped off a bit in the first week I had it.

Bought for a trip to Europe - easy to use, love the simplicity of the make & fun directions for each function on screen - takes clear beautiful shots - great zoom but the lens extends everytime you turn it on, not REALLY a big deal- good color and good at night/ no light. Only thing - where is the red eye reduction - guess I have to read the manual and I'm used to Sony's where I charge the whole camera on the base for the battery - this one you have to remove the battery and charge it separately - i highly recommend picking up a second battery since its so cheap - i lost mine half way through my vacation but now I know better!

I bought this as an upgrade to my old Coolpix camera from over 4 years ago. I have a Nikon D70 and I stayed with Nikon for my point & shoot. I found the menus easy to navigate without looking at the manual only because it was almost the same set-up as my old Coolpix point & shoot.
The pictures from this camera come out crisp and clean. Some of my recent best shots have been taken with this camera.
This is great for everyday use or if you are just getting started with photography and dont want to spend over $1,000.00 for a nice camera.

This is a great point-n-shoot camera. Excellent shutter speed and great photos. It is a compact camera and you will find the buttons to be small. It takes a little time to familiarize yourself with the operation of the camera but once you do it is a snap.

I shoot Nikon DSLRs for professional shots, and I carry this around for family and convenience. I am very happy with the camera's size, battery life, and general picture quality.
Downsides:
1. The menus are awkward. I don't know who could use all of the scene settings.
2. The video recording is only for emergencies. I shot my daughter's piano recital - 4 minutes - and wound up with a momento but something barely worth posting to youtube.
3. No RAW/NEF setting. Maybe just too much to ask from an inexpensive P&S, but it would have been really nice.
