I finally got one of these babies and I gotta say I am very impressed! Here are my observations:
Noise control is better from ISO 100-400 than my Nikon D300. At ISO 800-1600 they are about the same but anything higher than ISO 1600 the D300 blows the D60 away. (This is probably all thanks to the EXspeed chip)
The D60's saturation is almost the same as the D300's but the D300 takes the cake (although I dont really crank up the D300's saturation all the way because the colors just looks too unreal if you do)
The D60 which I am happy to say also exposes shadow highlights better than my old D40x and D80 but not better than my D300. Both the D300 and the D60 suffers the same amount of noise when the active D-lighting is turned on.
Everything else like build quality, focus tracking, customizeability, cont. shooting, ergonomics ect, ect... the D300 wins it. Also if you shoot sports, night and alot of moving subjects the D300 is the camera is for you. But for me, I dont shoot sports and I shoot in mostly controlled environments. And what I care about is the picture quality only, the D60 suits my needs. The D60 produces as good and if not even better quality pics than my D300. The money you can save if you buy a D60 instead of a D300 would go to pay for better lenses and better lighting equiptment which IMHO is where the investment should go anyway instead of a new camera body.
(Pictures that were used in comparison were all shot in SRGBa RAW format, NR was set to off)

I have had this camera for about a month now and am getting what I thought I would get - great pictures with a lot of detail, ease of use and easy to figure out menu's. I most enjoy the burst feature ("continuous") which allows for great action shots of kids playing sports and candid shots during family gatherings, vacations. We will probably end up getting another lens since the one that comes with it is not great for zooming in from a distance -sometimes you can't get that close to the action at a baseball or soccer game.
Downside - maybe - is shooting everything through the eyepiece. I did like the framing through the big display window on the back on my older camera.
Battery seems to keep a charge for a good long time and interface with my apple using the nikon software has been trouble free. Allthough, it does not have any easy (or any!) way to print as part of it as far as I can tell so far.
I have not ventured into using the lettered stops on the dial yet but have used the AUTO, portrait, sports, digital zoom and no flash features with good results.
I just saw this same camera advertised in LA for 599 so price was a winner too...

The Nikon D60 is a camera that I have been waiting for! It's a 'fool proof' camera. I recommend it for pretty much anything...you can get beautiful pictures pretty much every time. The camera is a heavier than most digital but well worth it, I myself prefer a little 'meat' to my camera. My only complaint so far would be that I usually prefer to look to the LCD screen while taking pictures, I've gotten myself used to doing so...so looking thru the view finder has taking some getting used to. My pictures have been rich and dreamy with no noise,no purple haze...you're going to love this camera:)

Comments about Nikon D60 SLR Digital Camera Kit with 18-55mm VR Lens:
The Nikon D60 is a very good camera for someone wanting to switch from a point & shoot camera to a digital SLR. I purchased this camera for my mother-in-law. She wanted a versatile camera that she could use for family gatherings, vacations and taking picture around her farm of the wildlife and her flowers. I had the camera for about two weeks, before she picked up the camera. I tried the D60 in many different light conditions and settings and was very pleased with the quality of pictures. The camera is very compact and easy to use. You will still get an out of focus picture from time to time, but nothing compared to a point & shoot. I use to have a high end point and shoot and thought I was getting good pictures, but when I loaded them onto the computer, I was very disappointed with fuzzy photos. I purchased a Nikon D80 (which was replaced by the D90) for may self a while back. The were two things I noticed instantly when handling the D60: 1) The camera had a slower response time in taking a picture. It wasn't great, but I still noticed it. 2) The mechanism of zooming in & out with the 18-55mm lens was not as smooth as other lenses I've used in the past. I was still a lot better than a toggle switch or button on a point & shoot, when you are trying to take action shots. All in all, if you're tired of fuzzy photos from your point & shoot and want clear crisp photo, this is a great first step in the SLR world of photography.

Comments about Nikon D60 SLR Digital Camera Kit with 18-55mm VR Lens:
With some reading and research, camera is easy to set up to take great photos. Good continuous shooting mode makes sports and kid shots straightforward. Battery lasts 900 or so photos but would be nice to have AA option. We miss having Live View on the LCD but are learning to do without. Kit lenses work great, autofocus sort of slow on telephoto but not a big issue. A better lens would fix that issue but the kit lenses are a good start. 18-55mm and 55-200mm.
With more practice and reading, will be able to do much more than with the old point and shoot we had.

This is my first SLR camera and I am delighted. After doing a ton of research with a professional photographer friend, we settled on this for me. I took it with me on a trip and found that it is a great all-around camera. Now I can't wait to get more lenses! Instant addict.

Comments about Nikon D60 SLR Digital Camera Kit with 18-55mm VR Lens:
I've been using my D60 for everything from portraits to star trails and I've been really impressed by it! The clarity of the shots and the noise reduction is great for longer exposures and the size makes it easy to carry with you in situations where every ounce counts (I've been taking mine back-packing!) Sometimes the auto-focus can be a bit slow which has made me miss a shot or two which was frustrating, but over-all I love this camera and I've been really impressed! I was pleased that the ISO range goes over 1600 and that the aperture goes down to 3.5. This is my first digital SLR and it's been really easy to figure out so I've been shooting everything in manual and loving the results. I would recommend this camera to anyone.

This is my first digital camera and I purchased it based on the recommendations of a professional photographer and two other people who own it. It takes beautiful pictures, even for a beginner; the quality of your pictures look like you know what you are doing. After owning and using it for three weeks, I am getting comfortable using the different shuttle speeds and settings. This is a great camera; I highly recommend it.

I use the camera for family portraits, travel and nature photography. It is easy to use and figure out. I did have to adjust the exposure compenstion value to lighten up the pictures even with a flash. Great for casual use. I got the kit with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. I would suggest to upgrade and get the 55-200mm for a couple of hundred more. The longer focal length will give you greater range.

I am so impresed with this camera. I do not like the 18-55 mm lense it is too wide angle. I would have prefered the 55-200 mm lense but was told when purchased it was not available with the D60 body. A very easy to use with great pictures. Buy one and you will be very happy. I love doing business with B&H I have been a customer for many years,

DX-Nikkor lenses are engineered and optimized for use on Nikon DX-format D-SLRs and are designed to cover the smaller image area of the DX sensor. When a DX lens is mounted on an FX-format Nikon D-SLR, the camera's DX-Crop Mode is automatically engaged, introducing a 1.5x magnification (cropping) factor.
