The 500GB Little Big Disk Quadra External Hard Drive from LaCie delivers high-performance in a portable package. Built for the professional on the go, the drive features a triple interface that allows it to be connected via eSATA, FireWire-800, FireWire-400 or USB 2.0, a large 16MB data buffer, a built-in RAID 0 controller, and fanless cooling.
The drive is bus powered when connected via FireWire and offers sustained transfer rates of up to 115MB/sec using eSATA, 85MB/sec using FireWire-800, 40MB/sec using FireWire-400, and 35MB/sec using USB 2.0. High performance does not usually go hand-in-hand with a portable package, but the Little Big Disk is an exception to that rule. This drive is perfect for anyone who needs to work with digital video, high-resolution graphics, or other performance-intensive applications on the go.

I use Super Duper to keep an exact copy of my Macbook Pros disk and this drive is perfect as it's fast (striped and 7200rpm) and bus powered so you can back up when on location after the generators have been shut or while you're heading back to the hotel.
It also has esata but that requires external power - fine for when your at home.

I use this with MacBook Pro as a Photoshop scratch disk and to temporarily store some work files of 100-500MB size each. I prefer to connect it via FireWire 800 for good speed and use of bus-power.
This drive is very quiet, and more importantly it does not get too warm with heavy use.
