The Blue2CAN Bluetooth Adapter from Red Hen Systems is designed to allow photographers to link a compatible Bluetooth GPS device to their Nikon or Fujifilm camera for the purposes of geotagging images at the time of exposure. Using a Bluetooth link to a GPS gives a user more room to move their receiver to a better location in order to get a stronger signal. The geospatial data collected in the form of latitude and longitude is automatically transmitted to the camera through the Blue2CAN adapter.

The Blue2CAN works with Nikon Digital SLR cameras equipped with a 10-pin connector (Nikon D2-series, D3-series, D200, D300) and is also compatible with the Fujifilm S5 Pro and IS Pro. In order to receive GPS signals, a compatible Bluetooth GPS receiver or datalogger will need to be purchased separately.

Note! Blue2CAN will not work with GPS receivers that require the input of a PIN code for pairing

Bluetooth Adapter for Digital Cameras
With select Nikon and Fujifilm digital SLR cameras, wireless connectivity is possible replacing the wired serial connection for the purposes of connecting to peripherals like GPS receivers.
Compact Design
Unobtrusive adapter sits firmly in the 10-pin remote socket and has a wired tether that affixes the Blue2CAN to the neck strap in cases where the adapter might accidentally be removed.
Low-Power Usage
Draws only 2.5 mA from the attached camera and has minimal drain on the battery.
Interface (Inputs/Outputs) Bluetooth 2.0 (Class II)
Nikon 10-pin connector
Maximum Power Draw 2.5 mA
Dimensions 1.1 x 0.8 x 0.6" (28 x 21 x 16 mm)
Weight 1.6 oz. (45 g)
Note: Compatible with Nikon D2-series, D3-series, D200, D300, D700, Fujifilm S5 Pro, and IS Pro digital SLR cameras with 10-pin remote sockets

This is a small, tiny, rugged, nicely compact Bluetooth GPS transmitter. It works as described, and consumes little power. I use it in combination with a Holux GPSlim 240, and it works like a charm.

Why would I buy this? Light, Compact, Rugged, and it works - no clumsy wires.

Why I wouldn't: 1) Pricey; 2) Although it fits perfectly, it doesn't stay on for long, especially if you're on the field. I have to continuously reconnect it. Use of Tripod is recommended.

Other than that, by design, the D200 meter stays on when a GPS device is connected. With the D300, you have the option to have it turned off; however, GPS communication must be re-established before GPS data is recorded.

Bottom line, I would highly recommend the Blue2CAN for its size, build, and functionality.

This device does NOT work with the D700 as delivered. Yes the Nikon D700 has the 10 pin connector, but the geometry of the camera housing in the vicinity of the connection is such that there is interference with the housing of the Blue2Can device before there is good contact with the device. I spoke to the folks at Red Hen and inquired as to how thick the housing was (I'm an engineer...)...I wanted to use sand paper to bevel the edges and the corner that interfered. The person I talked with thought this might work based on how they're made, I gave it a try, and it did. The interfering edges need to be relieved of about a 1/16th of an inch on each side (the 'left' and 'bottom' as your looking at the front of the camera while trying to install the device) using an approximately 45 degree bevel , and the common corner needs a bit more. Obviously it is sand, try it out, sand some more...you don't want to remove to much. Now, with the Holux data logger, it's working like a champ.

Comments about Red Hen Systems Blue2CAN Bluetooth Adapter for Nikon & Fujifilm Digital SLRs:

4 stars only because of price. I'm not sure I see why this costs [$]. However, it did what I needed so I can't complain too much. The setup is simple and the usage is as well. Battery life was impacted but not terribly (my GPS unit has a sleep mode and is motion activated, which probably helped). I shot roughly 350 pictures before I had to recharge. Also, that was over the course of 4-5 days. There was a good amount of time where the camera would be on and I'd be walking, which was also draining the battery. If you were just taking pictures constantly, I would guess it would last longer (though I haven't performed any tests). The size is great, and the lanyard is definitely welcome as it would be easy to lose. On the subject of the device becoming loose and falling off easier, I think part of that will be from mishandling. The fit is very tight. Removal is best done with a prying type of device (I used the edge of a plastic tray at one point. The reason I say this is that rocking it back and forth to get it out will certainly loosen the connection. If you can safely pry it off a little from a few sides, the rocking motion will be much less and the fit will remain tight longer. The only part I found tricky was setting it into the locked mode where it remembers the GPS location (shooting inside buildings, etc). After a couple times I got better, so this isn't a major concern. However, a camera setting (not sure that's possible), or a switch on the device might be nicer.Again, other than price I can't really say anything too negative about this device. It works and does just what you would expect.I used this for an eight-day trip to Ireland (personal). Just remember to keep your GPS charged and to turn the lock off after you leave a building and you'll be set!

Comments about Red Hen Systems Blue2CAN Bluetooth Adapter for Nikon & Fujifilm Digital SLRs:

Love this device! With the Holux GPS around my neck, used it all over China and didn't have to remember any names. Pinpointed location within feet and with provided software, I can zoom in tight on Google Earth. Permanently stores precise location, altitude and time in metadata for both RAW and JPEG images. Cons: only works on Nikon & Fujifilm DSLRs; if not plugged in to camera, device can snag, break safety cord and get lost forever (as did my first one); Google Earth feature only works with JPEG.

Comments about Red Hen Systems Blue2CAN Bluetooth Adapter for Nikon & Fujifilm Digital SLRs:

I was worried about reviews from users who mentioned dislodging the unit from the camera. The unit however fits tightly/snuggly and there have been no problems to date with normal handling.

The unit has been easy to use and the results are as good as the GPS data received. The bundled Bluetooth GPS (M241 32 CH. BLUETOOTH GPS DATALOGGER) has performed well and has provided accurate fixes when viewed using the Nikon ViewNX software.

            A nice piece of equipment.

Comments about Red Hen Systems Blue2CAN Bluetooth Adapter for Nikon & Fujifilm Digital SLRs:

Purchased as part of B&H's kit packaged with the Holux M-241 Wireless GPS Datalogger, the Blue2Can works reliably with my Nikon D-200.

Installation was the only challenge: I did not initially realize how snug the fit was and did not press the adapter fully into the 10-pin socket. It is a very snug fit. When fully seated after pressing firmly, the tiny red LED on the rear of the unit flashes to signal connection is made.

After that, operation could not be simpler: turn on GPS datalogger, allow it to acquire the position, proceed to make images. Location and UTC time is inserted in EXIF and displays when looking at preview on the camera.

4 star rating due only to my taking exception to installation instructions: it did require more force than I expected and it did not "snap" into place as described. Minor quibbles.

Comments about Red Hen Systems Blue2CAN Bluetooth Adapter for Nikon & Fujifilm Digital SLRs:

Works great on D300 and very unobtrusive. Leave it on all the time. Takes about 30 seconds for initial acquisition with bluetooth GPS unit. After that, it is ready to go full time - so long as the GPS unit is on and transmitting. Unlike other units that attach with a cable, this one does not require a restart after the meter times out. Used it on a three week trip. Was able to have GPS coordinates embedded even when taking photos from back seat in car since GPS was sitting on dash.

Comments about Red Hen Systems Blue2CAN Bluetooth Adapter for Nikon & Fujifilm Digital SLRs:

I have used this on my D200 after trying to link a hand-held GPS using a cable and it makes a world of difference. Just turn on the GPS receiver, plug in the Red Hen, and once it has the signal it keeps recording. It can be dislodged, but I shoot primarily on a tripod when using this so it's a non issue.

                  Disadvantage:
The only real disadvantage is that it ties up the 10-pin connector so you can't easily use a remote cable release (I get around this by using the self timer).

I've had the Blue2CAN for under a year. I've used it on my D200 and D300 with no problem.

Although it works on the D700, it doesn't fit nicely. If you're planning on using it with the D700, I recommend looking into other offerings.

di-GPS is an alternative (although it doesn't support Bluetooth).
