This receiver puts out excellent sound and comes with an abundance of connections. Everything is clearly labeled and color coded making setup a breeze. It even came with stickers to mark the speaker wires so you didn't get them confused.
The only downside was the software. Certain options disable other options and there's no instructions as to what effects what. Also there is no way to cancel the auto-setup once you have begun it. You simply have to complete it and then decide whether to save the settings or not. However I expect perfection to give a perfect score so I had to knock it down one.

I got this to replace my old/broken Onkyo receiver that I bought as part of a surround sound in a box setup years ago. I also needed it for a new HD TV (HDMI, etc). I've been using it for a few weeks now and so far I have no major complaints.
I love the 2 zone setup. My wife can now listen to music in the kitchen without interrupting the television sound. The speaker setup mic is great too. No more measuring off the speaker distances and manually programing the surround sound levels. It's all done automatically and works quite well.
It's hard to beat all the included features for the price with any other brand. It also helps that B&H is an authorized online reseller of Onkyo. Be careful of other online sites offering cheaper deals as many aren't authorized online resellers.

I love the TXSR696 surround sound receiver. It does what it claims to do in the ads and for the money it has the most bang for the buck. It passes full HDMI signals through with no additional wiring required for sound, and it it's "auto speaker settings" work like you would expect. Can't be beat for the value you get per dollar!

For an a/v receiver at this price point the Onkyo 606 is a perfect fit.
I found it easy to set up and use.
Nice to have all the HDMI cables running to the receiver, it really cuts down on the cable clutter.
I used the speaker calibration system that's included when I first set up my system, but after a day or two I manually fine tuned my setup, which was very easy to do, and now my sound is even better!
I have read some reviews that this receiver runs hot, but I have not found this to be the case. Does not run any hotter than any other receiver I have owned.
I would highly recommend this receiver for anyone that wants a quality a/v receiver at a great price.

This unit was simple to set up and with mixing a pair of Bose 901's a Bose center channel speaker and 4 Sony bookshelf speakers this was easy to set up and calibrate settings quickly and accurately. It truly makes my home theater sound like an actual theater. the sound is crisp and clear and not distorted. It replaced a Pioneer 6.1 system and there is no comparison.. Onkyo sound is the only way to go from now on!!

This Receiver does everything one expects from a Top Quality product. Of special interest to me was the Audssey Automatic Speaker Setup capability which provided a clear well balanced sound from my mixed speakers (three sets of different sizes).
The Instruction Manual is easy to understand and
makes First Time Setup a breeze. I have had several compliments on the clean Surround Sound produced by my Home Theater System.

I needed an upgrade in features and versatility from my Yamaha DSP-A1, but I didn't want to spend a lot of money. I was impressed by the review in the August edition of Home Theater Magazine so I thought I'd give the Onkyo a try. WOW what a receiver; it blew my Yamaha away! Setup was straightforward and easy. Video performance and sound reproduction is excellent. I'm very pleased with the receiver.

I got this for my husband as a gift. He cant wait to get all 7 speakers hooked up....this receiver (of which I know very little) seems to work WAY better than the comparable Yamaha receiver which we had for the last 4 years. The sound is clear, the gradations in the volume control allow for nice control, the set up was EASY....way better than the way the Yamaha worked (had to press the volume a gazillion times to increase/decrease sound, had too many different sound "types" i.e. theater, band etc. The Onkyo is simple, sounds great and has now made my husband an Onkyo fan.
