I started out with Heathkit receivers and have had maybe 10 or 15 stereo amplifier or receivers over the last 40 years.
This unit is fairly normal confiduration for a stereo receiver. The 6 rear component connections are adequate for the "normal" system, if such an animal exists. I have a second tuner, reel to reel tape deck, cassette tape deck, cd player, and turn table connected.
The unit operates without having to use the remote. A definate plus as I dislike remotes. I haven't unpacked mine so I have no comment on the remote.
The unit lacks a way to normalize the volume of the various inputs. This may be doable through the programmable menu but I haven't located the information.
The amp section appears to be stable in output. You will need good speakers to get best sound.
Adequate (in the best sense of the word) for a living room stero setup.
Separate pre-amps and equalizers would be recommended for sound shaping and volume equalization between sources.

I purchased this unit for the cottage. Because it will be used sparingly, I didn't want to spend a lot so this fit the bill. It appears to be a good quality, basic receiver with the ability to play the same source in two areas. I also own a TX 8555 which I use at home in our pool room. The 8555 has much more power, a better volume control and a few other features lacking on this unit. Depending on your speaker power needs and how much you plan on using the receiver, you might be better off spending the additional cash and upgrading to this unit. Given my needs, the 8255 will do just fine.

Relatively easy setup (speaker wires are a pain to insert, but stay put once they're in). Great sound. Good remote.

This is really a clean sounding receiver. Absolutely, no humming from this one. Hooked it up to a pair of polk audio monitor 70 speakers. The clarity is unbelievable. The price at B&H was the lowest and the service is an A+. The item was shipped the same day I place the order and guess what? Free 3 day UPS ground shipping. Thank you B&H, I will definitely order from you again. No complaints.

This tuner allowed me to plug in the tape deck, the CD player, the turntable and two speakers. And everything works! My son seemed to hook it up with no trouble at all.

Only needed a 2 channel stereo and wanted one with switched outlets on the back and an easily connectable iPod dock. The Onkyo TX-8255 fit the bill perfectly for just [$] (shipped). Purchased a lightly used Onkyo DS-A2 iPod docking station w/ remote (although could have used the receiver's remote) for $50 and I was good to go! The receiver doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles - its greatest plus - which took me back to a simpler time when I first started buying stereo equipment and could understand the owner's manuals.

Purchased this for my son's birthday. This is his start on a real sound system. I gave him an old pair of Bose 301 speakers I had in the attic, he had gotten a turntable for Christmas. The system is just what suits his needs. It's nice getting back to the basics.
Simple setup, good sound, great value.
I knew B&H for their photo & video, I didn't know they carried audio as well. I'm very happy!

As a child of the Album Rock Era, and a stereo component enthusiast, I am very pleased that Onkyo continues to offer the all important internal tape monitor function which allows the listener to pass FM and phonographic signals through the graphic equalizer. A feature that was not present in the more expensive Yamaha Integrated receiver. This and great sound too. Now if I can only locate a DBX Dynamic Range Expander!

Comments about Onkyo TX-8255 2-Channel Stereo Receiver (Black):
I bought this Onkyo TX-8255 to replace an ancient TX-25 that was still working, but all of the switches and controls had become noisey. They no longer could be coaxed along by squirting chemicals in them. I use this as an integrated amp in a home recording studio, and sometimes I would be in the middle of a great take, and suddenly hear static in my headphones. That got frustrating. Two Channel Receivers are not as big a category as they were 30 years ago, but Onkyo still had this new model that was roughly equivelent to my old unit. It even has a phono pre-amp, which I occasionally need. Other units I compared had different arrangements for things such as speaker switching, that made them less user friendly for my studio. I need to be able to turn speakers A&B on or off independently of each other and the phones without hitting one button multiple times, or scrolling through a menu. I have to have one switch for each function. Mostly I use either just phones, or sometimes just speaker A. They have now changed ALL the switches and controls to electronic. No more possibility for mechanical contacts to wear out or get noisey. Turns out, Onkyo learned how to make an even better sounding amp over the last 30 years, too. I didn't expect it to sound any different, but boy does it ever. The sonic difference is a nice bonus, and it's not a subtle one. I don't use the remote, but I assume it's okay.

the product is great as is the service. the only issue i had is that the description of the device is that it is iPod compatible. but you need to buy an extra expensive dock for it, as it does not have an AUX port. i ended up buying an MP3 connector instead and it works just fine. otherwise its a great product

When my old Fisher receiver died, I was looking for a basic receiver to match the 8 ohm speakers I have. While I'm looking for quality, I'm not into "full theater sound" or sound levels that shake the house, nor do I plan to hook it up to my TV. While I could hook it up DVD, I'm only listening to FM and using CDs and tapes, so this fits my needs fine.
Following the manual, I set presets for the FM stations I wanted quickly.

I've used this amp in a few different multi-room audio setups. One was powering two pairs of in ceiling speakers, another was to power a pair of outdoor speakers on a porch and tower speakers inside. It's performed great, and seems to have more power than you would think for a 50 watts per channel receiver. The FM tuner is above average as well, pulling in distant stations with only the included FM antenna in a building with metal siding and roofing.
Overall a solid entry level receiver.

Easy to set up and had it going in a short time, nice speaker wire mounts that screw in and out. Would recomend this to other teachers to handle their sound needs in the classroom like I do.

I bought this receiver in Toronto, where I live. It worked well with normal use for seven months. then the sound began to cut out completely. I took it to an authorized service shop, which went bankrupt. Got it back and took it to an experienced repairman, but he couldn't fix it. Now I have sound from one speaker only. I wrote to Onkyo in the States. They would do nothing for me--told me to take it to a service shop (not bankrupt) in another city. Do yourself a HUGE favor and don't buy this defective piece of junk.

Easy to use. Sound is great, but far from vintage Hafler and the like. Typically hyped in the highs and lows, a problem that is fixable. Great design, as is most Onkyo gear.

Although rated at 50 watts per channel, this receiver can crank the sound with no hint of distortion. I use this receiver in a small room, but I have no doubt it would be suitable for use in a much larger space. It has an attractive display and can pull in FM stations that have been difficult to receive with other radios. As a plus, you can attach a record player if you can't give up those LPs. Also, can connect tape, CD, and DVD players. Can power up to four speakers. Very solid sound and feel. Seems like Onkyo has thought of everything.

My Onkyo died so I needed a receiver that would accommodate my phono and my cassette / CD player. This one is even better than my old one. Great sound with more power that I can use. The bass really 'punches' my JBL speakers, crisp and clear
And the price was outstanding.

I bought this to build a relative's first decent audio system. The controls are basic but sufficient and useful - no useless distracting "features." Their action was smooth. The sound was clean and reasonably effortless. I have not used it extensively, but the quality out of the box was comensurate or better than the price point. Pretty good value for an entry-level component.
