The most common size in photography is 1/4"-20.
The adapter allows cameras and shoe mount flashes
to be used in the odd location.
The Manfrotto piece is very well made. Really one could not find fault with its manufacture.

Very usefull in attaching speedlights when they are used on Wein HSH hot shoes, which have a 1/4x20 female thread, to umbrella swivels and various other clamps.
