We create DVD's from camcorder and VHS tapes on the order of around 3000 per year and this line of Panasonic DVD recorders is the best on the market and has been for the last 5 years. The quality is the best hands down, and they have the ability to create a DVD with no menu (they just start playing the video when you put them in). They also will finalize a disk without going into the menu or using the remote. Just stop recording, hit eject and then hit record. So nice and easy!
The only thing about the latest couple of models (this one included), is that they do not last as long as the older ones. We have to replace them after about 2,000 hours of recording. They stop recognizing discs as recordable. We have tried other recorders, and none have lasted NEARLY as long as 2,000 hours, so these are still the best.
They also will not record the widescreen switch on the DVD's, but I have only found 1 recorder that will. This means that you have to either record the disc with black bars on the top and bottom and zoom on a widescreen TV or record with everybody tall and skinny so it looks ok stretched on a widescreen TV, but looks distorted on a 4:3 TV.
Look no further if you are looking for the best quality and easiest to use DVD recorder.

We've used Panasonic DVD recorders for the last 8 years for live recording of events, overall they've served their purpose. We currently own over 60 units of varying models.
The EA-18 recorder does everything it needs to do, and does it acceptably well. One downer however is durability... the older model Panasonic recorders generally lasted 4+ years of hard use while these new units seem to fail in one year. Out of 40 purchased last year I still have 10 fully functional and another 15 that have limited functionality. I need to explain that our use of these units is far outside the norm... we use them for live event recording.
The physical record button on the deck is a common failure point, it tends to stop registering button presses after a couple thousand disks... 15 of the failed decks exhibited this behavior.
Admittedly our use of these machines is well outside of their designed parameters using them as portable DVD recorders for live events. They live in rack cases and get hauled around from event to event. For more normal usage they should be fine. The average user won't be transporting them constantly and using them in dusty, hot, cold, indoor, outdoor, etc. conditions.

The DVD recorder arrived in great time, in perfect condition and is exactly what we were looking for at a price that was $20 LESS than the on-line competitors we also reviewed! Thanks for making my first shopping experience with B & H a GREAT one! I'll be back!

I don't do much of this stuff, but I've used it to record church service videos by a friend's recommendation and haven't had any problems so far. It does tell you during finalizing that it will take 15 minutes, but it really only turns out to take a few minutes, so it performs better than it says, so no complaints there. The reason I don't give 5 stars is my lack of experience.

Had Panasonic before, hoped this would work like the old one... In a few weeks that I had it, it was frozen 8-14 times (had to unplug the unit to start all over) and "open" button on the unit was freezing too. Very slow to start. Very disappointed in Panasonic.

We use it to make dubs of our customer's video tapes. These unit was easy to set up and use immediately on a large order we received.
The only con than I can think of is that the record button should be larger and easier to use without hitting other buttons nearby. Also, titling could be made easier to accomplish and that would save valuable time.

We are fortunate enough to have U-verse, and the great DVR that comes with it. We had a Toshiba DVD burner, but could never get it to Format for replay the DVDs we burned in other players. The DMR-EA18K makes great quality DVDs, with little effort, that play in every DVD player, and computer in our house.

I like the unit but don't know why they didn't put the open and shut button on the remote. Also, it will not play my older home recorded DVDs.

Seems to be integrated with my LIVE production system very well. Finalizes a 1.5 hr recordings pretty quickly (I record 2x/wk at SP) Works well for ministries that do immediate duplication after events or services. No problems as of yet but like most electronics they will crash over time. (*crossing my fingers*)

I use the recorder for roll playing training sessions and back up for legal depositions. For training sessions it allows me to present the trainee with a DVD to take with them for review after their training. I also use it to back up legal depositions.

Comments about Panasonic DMR-EA18K DVD Recorder (Black):
It's transferring VHS tapes beautifully (I'm using the fastest speed for maintaining as much quality as possible -- as always, the transfer will only be as good as the source tape). It's transferring things from the T-W set box beautifully. I love the Flexible Recording setting. Make sure you go into the "Display" button (Button B towards the bottom) and make adjustments as you like (it seems like you have to do this for each film you play, but that might be able to be handled through "setup" to keep your settings, not sure.
It's been working, well, like a workhorse, and I couldn't be more pleased. If there's even the slightest criticism (which I'm just trying to come up with) it's that when you press "record" there's a very slight delay, so plan accordingly for those few seconds. Finalizing discs literally takes perhaps 30 seconds, if that long.
Terrific product, and I researched this endlesssly.

I bought this product cause I trust Panasonic reliability. However, this model really disappointed me as it stop functioning after five uses. Beware of low quality due to low profit margin in this mature market segment.
