My purpose for this device is to replace an aging VCR. The setup was straight forward by using the exact same RCA wires and RF coaxial connections as the VCR. A direct cable hookup is used and not a cable set top box. I followed the quick installation instructions in the manual step by step and the ATSC digital tuner found all expected digital channels and the QAM tuner pleasantly surprised me by finding lots of worth while HD channels not shown on the cable company TV listings. I mapped the QAM found channels to the regular cable channel numbers to determine what is going to be shown and placed them in the channel favorites for easy access. The date and time of day were found easily and accurately.
My first impression of using DVD-RAM is it’s extraordinary. A Panasonic brand DVD-RAM disk is used to record with. After using a VCR for over 20 years to save televised shows, this is nothing less than stunning. I can record shows while I’m watching with the touch of a button and delete any previously recorded show easily. Simply press the delete key, * while playing back a previously recorded show and it’s gone and the space is ready to be used again! How cool is that? It’s similar to TiVo without the subscription price but doesn’t have a built in TV guide.
The DVD remote was easily programmed to control my old school Sony TV on/off, channel surf and volume control. It took less than 1 minute of my time to do this. By connecting the DVD recorder RF coaxial output to the TV RF input I can use the TV tuner and remote to watch a different show than the DVD recorder is recording.
The SD slot works well for my camera’s SD memory card to view pictures in slide show mode.
It will not copy DVD’s that have copy righted material on them period. I tried to record multiple purchased DVD’s with no success. For each attempt a succinct message of copying stopped for copyrighted material displays on the TV screen.
Scheduled recording worked without a flaw for the NBA playoff game I wanted to time shift. Very intuitive setup for scheduling shows, Panny made this as easy as possible.
One possible software glitch is removing a favorite channel. The manual is cloudy about removal and the various key sequences I’ve tried so far won’t get rid of one of the favorites I set. This may be my error but I’ve tried multiple ways of deleting it and none of them worked. This has definite room for improvement.
Additional features include dividing a recorded show into two pieces and inserting indexes, using the create chapter button, for easy access. Dividing a recorded show is a little involved but with practice I expect to move along faster than the first try. I need to explore the editing prerecorded material features to remove unwanted stuff. Use the commercial skip to miss the next minute of content. There is a time slip feature but I haven’t used it. I hope this review assists others in evaluating competing products.

After having a very good experience with an older Panasonic dvd recorder, I decided to purchase this one. It worked well for about a month but then began to freeze frequently while performing very standard operations. I also began to getting "bad disc" messages despite using new Panasonic discs. When I called the Help Center (which in the past provided excellent service) and told them of my problems, they essentially said there was nothing they could do for me.Although the other reviews on this site were positive, you should check out the ones on [...] that are much more in keeping with what I experienced. If this model dies completely, I'm going to purchase the Toshiba 570 which was much more positively reviewed by users like myself.

Comments about Panasonic DMR-EZ28K DVD Recorder (Black):
The EZ28 is virtually the same as my old ES25. I got the EZ28 because the ES25 started messing up dual-layer +R disks (wouldn't format or wouldn't finalize; disk then unreadable). I subsequently found a firmware update for the ES25 to make it more compatible with 'crude' dual-layer disks; this appears to have helped the format problem but not the finalizing.
EZ28 pluses:
Virtually the same capabilities as the ES25, including the remote. Like the ES25, get good quality video (much better than with the Samsung VR375)using the s-video input and HDMI out to the TV. I particularly like the powerful title editing which allows quick selection of characters from a grid containing many special characters. The EZ28 apparently doesn't need to format dual-layer +R disks like the ES25 did.
EZ28 minuses:
For some reason they deleted a very useful title-editing feature the ES25 had: the capability to store and recall about 20 frequently used phrases (such as the names of TV shows) and imbed them in a title.

This is the second one I have purchased.
I really like the picture quality of Panasonic DVD recorders and this is my back up unit since Panasonic will no longer manufacture DVD recorders.
B&H Photo, is one of the most professional company's that I have dealt with and I will buy from them again.

I had a Panasonic for several years, trouble free.
I use it a lot to record tape to disc, disc to disc. This model is easy to hook up and easy to operate. The big feature that I really like is that you don't have to format DVD-R, +R. It has a good menu to help you through any step that you may need help with. If you are a steady user like me, you will love this work horse.

Comments about Panasonic DMR-EZ28K DVD Recorder (Black):
I run a pro studio and have been using Panasonic DVD recorders since they first came out. I've tried other brands but find the Panasonic line to hold up longer, have fewer problems, and deliver overall better results.
I recently purchased another three EZ28's which will be used by clients to record worship services at local churches.
The EX28's strength are its versatility and it can record on just about any brand/quality/price blank DVD you can buy. Not so with other brands I've tried. It can be set up to record various quality settings and delivers a better picture than any other line I've tried, period.
It's weakness is inherent to all DVD recorders; the finalization process. Clients want to simply push stop and be done with the recording process. No brand does this, and the Panasonic is neither easier or worse than any other.
Overall, the Panasonic EX28 is among the easiest of all brands to use, does exactly what it says it will do, and will still be doing it years after others have been taken out of the rack.

It would be nice to pick the programs from a grid, not input the time and channel, but other than that it is great. It works well w/ my Verta TV via HDMI.

I especially like the usb feature of watching divx and avi files. Simple and have many movies to choose from at my fingertips (32 gb flash drive). Awesome!!!! I use a pvr, so won't be recording much with the DMR-EZ28K DVD Recorder but i will when something of extreme importance in on TV that I want to keep forever.

I use this product in a school and I am very pleased with its performance. Set up was easy and the DVD quality is very good. It's a wonderful product and I would recommend this to my friends and colleagues. I have used other Panasonic recorders in the past & they have performed well. The only con would be the slow start-up but you can change that in the Functions/Setup area.

Comments about Panasonic DMR-EZ28K DVD Recorder (Black):
We only have a outdoor antenna to receive TV stations. The EZ28K 's digital tuners allow two of our old digital ready TV's (no digital tuner) to receive 30 digital and two low power analog stations. The third TV has a built in digital tuner and HDMI inputs.
The EZ28K's using DVD RAM disks let us recoded 4 hours (LP mode) for time shifting in very good playback quality (component in on two TV's, HDMI in on the third TV). With DVD RAM disks we can watch one show after it has started from the beginning (skipping commercials with the CM button) while the show continues to record. What a time saver. There is a 1.3 times playback speed (DVD RAM only) that allows additional time savings when viewing recorded programs.
You do need DVD RAMS that specifically allow for a one time copy protected recording for some shows (CBS "soaps" and one Fox station series). This is not a problem.
The EZ28K's will save us over a thousand dollars this year because we do not have to buy cable or satellite TV services for our three TV sets. The time shift recording is a bonus!
I highly recommend these units when used with DVD RAM's. Some recording features (wide screen recording for example) are not available with DVD- RW's.
Comments about Panasonic DMR-EZ28K DVD Recorder (Black):
Used to record student produced video studio projects for review by faculty.
Easy to use, dependable, simple controls. Downside is that consumer grade DVD recorders do not have VU meters or manually controlled audio levels.

Comments about Panasonic DMR-EZ28K DVD Recorder (Black):
Quite happy with the DMR-EZ28K thus far. Biggest issue is that it only plays divx files that have been burned to certain disks (-R, but not +R) with certain burners (definitely not Roxio). This is a curious problem that Panasonic says it has never heard of (even though there are multiple online conversations about it)! Seems an issue with the core design, solvable by using the "right" disks and burning software. Otherwise, the image quality is very clear on recordings, including LP, and the reliability seems strong. All in all a good machine for the price, and well-handled by B&H--so well, in fact, that I mean to use B&H for future electronic needs!

The recorder is used (M - F) one hour to record a SOAP, which are watched on Sunday. The setup was great and easy to use. However, I like to watch DVD movies during the week which required stopping the recorded SOAP thus finalizing the DVD daily.

Comments about Panasonic DMR-EZ28K DVD Recorder (Black):
I was given this DVD recorder to move our family into the digital world by copying all our old camcorder tapes and VCR memories. It was easy to set up and begin using and integrated well with a 5-year-old TV, a VCR, an analog video camera and an old stereo. It is easy to use as well, programming and setup to record took only a short while. The video picture of the transferred tapes is excellent. It makes editing those old tapes easy and gives you a new chapter each time you stop recording and then start again (at another point in the original tape). The only drawback is the long time to start up. Turn it on and go do something else for a few minutes and you won't get frustrated!

One of my VCR to DVD recorders finally died. It was a Panasonic, so I wanted another one. I debated getting another VCR to DVD unit but decided on a standalone DVD recorder.
I like this unit because the remote control is interchangable with my other Panasonic units. It's easy to use... takes every kind of disc, and take up very little space... a nice piece.
