Comments about Panasonic DMR-EA38VK DVD/VCR Combo Recorder (Black):
It takes me a while to buy an electronic product. Besides reading reviews I'll go down to the local electronic store, pick up a product, test it out, and then return it if it's not up to par. The EA38VK was my third DVD/VCR combo (tried the Sony and LG first). The Panasonic had the best upconvert algorithm of the three. In addition, the record quality was heads and shoulders above the Sony (in both XP and SP mode the record quality was spot on. In fact, it was difficult to see any differences between the XP and SP modes of the Panasonic). DVD playing and VCR playing are both really, really good. My only grip is that it takes a while to turn the unit on (even in the "fast" start mode). That's a small issue, however, as the most important factors (to me) are playback and recording ability. In this regard, Panasonic beat both the Sony and the LG (in the same model class).

Comments about Panasonic DMR-EA38VK DVD/VCR Combo Recorder (Black):
I've tried every feature on this recorder and there have been no problems whatsoever. I have copied dozens of my old family VHS tapes to DVD and the quality on the DVD is even better than the original tape. I've used -R and -R/W primarily but have tried +R as well and they seem to work fine also. However the +R had problems playing on another brand of equipment, but that was mentioned in the owners manual. The only advice I can give is to read the manual first, do the setup as instructed, and enjoy!

Comments about Panasonic DMR-EA38VK DVD/VCR Combo Recorder (Black):
This machine has a ton of input and output options. I have used it a number of applications after owning it for only a month or two. The dv input is quite handy and makes it quite versatile while using it with the VHS and DVD formats. It a bit pricey, but worth the extra bells and whistles.
