Technical reviewers, users and even Leo Laporte recommended the Panasonic brand when buying a DVD recorder and I agree with all of them. When recorded on to a DVD RAM, the play back image looks identical to the original broadcast- clear, sharp and vivid colors. It was easy to hook-up and begin recording in less than a 1/2 hour. I highly recommend this brand and product.

I found this product to be faulty in several respects:
1. it does not play any DVDs or CDs which were recorded on other DVD writers. It completely locks out on such DVDs or CDs and has to be rebooted just to get DVD disk out of the drive
2. it does not handle USB media > 32Gb in size, so any USB drives with stored content which > 32Gb in size are useless with this product
3. It frequently locks and has to be rebooted. It locks especially frequently when there is a DVD disk in the drive.
4. It boots almost as long as a PC computer
5. Switching between TV channels takes long time and sometimes I see this product arbitrary jumps from one TV channel to another and back
6. Somehow it arbitrarily gets into "widescreen" format and stays there for TV channels which are not widescreen, distorting the image.

We had another Panasonic DVD recorder for a number of years and are very happy with the replacement. We are still trying to figure out how to use the product to record one program while watching another program - will get grandkids to help.

Comments about Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK DVD/VCR Combo Recorder (Black):
I bought this to copy VHS, mini DV and Hi 8 tapes to DVD. It does that and it works well. However there are a few features that I wish it had. There is no "one-touch" dubbing from an external device. My Sony has that feature and I like it.
My Sony also automatically pauses the recording process if there is no footage on the tape. For example, if the scenes on the tape are separated by blue screen, the Sony pauses the recording and picks back up when the scene starts again. The Panasonic doesn't do this. In fact, it just stops and assumes the tape is done. And if you have it set up to automatically finalize, it will stop and finalize the DVD before you even knew what happened. So you can't really just walk away from the recording. You have to keep an eye on it in case it stops.
Also the menus for setting up recordings and making titles and so forth take some getting used to. Not real user friendly.
Here is the bad thing - many of the other brands have stopped making and stopped selling VHS/DVD combo sets. I am considering going back to Sony, but I will have to get a used one.

Comments about Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK DVD/VCR Combo Recorder (Black):
Even though the user's manual seems overly complex, setup was easy and straightforward. However, I immediately noticed that the video colour settings I customized as an option on my previous DVD/VCR machine were all gone and I had to "retune" everything using TV settings alone. The Panasonic has only the most rudimentary video adjustments (aspect ratio and black level). I also found the remote control overly complex yet without the ability to eject VHS tapes or to open and close the DVD tray. But, the unit seems to be working well . . . so far.

Comments about Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK DVD/VCR Combo Recorder (Black):
This is not a very competitive category, so Panasonic sort of gets a pass here. There aren't too many other options. However this unit definitely has it's flaws. Incredibly slow to start up and load unless you want to leave it on all the time with fan running. At random intervals while watching a DVD the logo/format info will pop up onto screen - annoying and distracting. The internal clock cannot keep accurate time. I have had the unit lock up on me and require a reboot to eject a DVD. However, it does reliably record DVD's and picture quality is decent. I haven't tried VHS functions yet.

This DMR-EZ48VK DVD/VCR Combo Recorder (Black) by Panasonic is great for recording DVD's it has most of all the connections you need and has been very dependable. I do wish there was an HDMI Input Connector (and/or Component Video Input) but they said this would be for Blu-Ray only and not needed, but I would like to be able to input the HD Signal from my dish network. Otherwise this product is just great. I have had some trouble after about 13 to 15 months of uses with the laser reader becoming dirty and it having difficulty reading the DVD disk. Before the 12 month warranty is up call there service department ([@]) and/or try a CD and/or DVD cleaning disk, this should help. Also you can try after the warranty is over you can take the out side cover off and carefully take out the four screws of the DVD burner and carefully take the cover off of it and with clean air from a can and/or air-compressor, blow the dust out of the insides carefully. Reassemble everything carefully and this product has been working very well for me, for over two years.

My main interest was to dub my VHS tape library to DVD.
As a music educator of nearly 40 years; I can reduce my storage
space drastically by dubbing to a DVD library.
"One-Push" recording for transfer and you're done! Talk about easy!

Great product, easy to use. purchased this to replace my old Go Video unit which had many issues & finally died.
Comments about Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK DVD/VCR Combo Recorder (Black):
I would buy again, but the instructions were a little hard to follow in the beginning, because I didn't have it hooked up to another panasonic I think.
Having finally figured it out I like all the features. The basic operations are simple enough, but because this DVD/VCR offers so many other options I feel that it will take a little practice to figure every thing out.

Comments about Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK DVD/VCR Combo Recorder (Black):
We were looking for a combination VCR and DVD recorder to replace an older unit that did not record DVDs and was also erratic in playing back DVD-R discs. The Panasonic unit seems to perform very well--the picture is better than with the old unit, it handles DVD-Rs flawlessly, and it "talks" to our Panasonic HD-TV, which simplifies setup. Our previous unit did not have an HDMI output, so we had been using the composite outputs. Initially, I hooked up the Panasonic unit this way, but the picture quality did not seem as good as it should be. When we switched to HDMI, things improved greatly--when using HDMI, the unit appears to interact with the Panasonic TV and automatically take care of the settings. The remote seems to work better than the ones with some other DVD players--you can always find the right menu, and it will control the Panasonic TV as well. Overall, we're pleased, as we have been with the Panasonic Viera TV. We haven't gotten around to trying DVD recording or transfers from VHS tapes, but these should be useful to us--even if only to rid the closet of several shelves of old tapes! A note on the "slow loading" comment: in the setup, there is a way to configure the unit so it starts up faster, though the manual notes that this increases energy consumption slightly--I think I will try this.

We needed a unit with a digital tuner to record TV as we don't have a satellite receiver or cable. This unit fulfils all that and more. Dubbing from the old VHS tapes to DVD is an added feature.

Easy to set up and record or play. Technical things like timer recording are a little tough and you have to jump around in the manual quite a bit but patience and taking a few notes helps. Not having a DVD tray opener on the remote is no big deal (you have to put it in or take it out anyway. Could start to record a bit faster though. All in all a pretty good machine.

Comments about Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK DVD/VCR Combo Recorder (Black):
I use this product for two purposes: (1) to view DVDs of various formats and regions, (2) to transfer VHS to DVD, which is the main reason why I purchased it.
I had a similar product before from Zenith, which proved to be unreliable and of bad quality. The Panasonic Combo recorder works much better and seems to be sturdier in construction. The conversions are easy to do by remote, although if you read the manual, it seems much more complicated! I started by following blindly the manual instructions, then I discovered features that made the process much easier...
I also like the fact that when there is a problem with the DVD, the unit can do an automated check up--and solve the problem if it is solvable.
The only negative so far is the fact that there is no "eject" command for disks DVD and tapes on the remote control. Bt that's really not a major setback!
