I was expecting to have to buy a compact keyboard, but my full size (albeit very thin) keyboard with a number pad fit fine and didn't need an additional rack space for the keyboard. It was tight vertically, though, so a thicker keyboard might need an extra 1/3 RU above it.

The mouse shelf was nice, especially after I used cable ties to fix the mouse cable to the back of the shelf so it wouldn't fall off accidentally.

I bought this Keyboard Shelf & Mouse Pad for my High end Home Theater Equipment Rack to use an Illuminated Keyboard and Mouse for my Security Camera System DVR, my 400 Disc DVD/CD Juke Box info entry, and my Rack Mount HTPC server. I researched every Key board shelf I could find and the unique double shelf Gator unit fit the bill perfectly. This unit is very well build (like a rock, and weighs as much, very steady, and high quality), slides in and out like its coated with butter, yet locks in place when not in use. I couldn't be more pleased with the unit!B&H, had the best price on the net[...] my hat's off to them!As with all 19" wide Rack mount Keyboard sliding shelves it won't take a standard size keyboard, but that's not a problem as there are plenty of keyboards out there that fit the shelf nicely.I highly recommend this unit!
