The Ion VCR-2-PC USB Videotape Conversion Player is a VCR that can output and archive old VHS tapes to your computer via USB. Once saved on a computer, DVDs can be burned, clips can be archived, and memories can be saved. You can even capture footage from older video formats, such as VHS-C and 8mm, by simply plugging your camcorder into the front panel's RCA jacks. The provided EX VHS software makes the entire process quick and easy.

This product is very easy to use and does exactly what it is designed to do. I have tapes ranging from 25 years to fairly recent. My older tapes came out the same as they do directly viewed on the TV that is to say that there are some that are not of a great quality. The old adage "garbage in garbage out" applies to this product and any low quality can be attributed the condition of the tapes since good tapes come out good. There is only minor editing capabilities in the software that is provided but once the VHS tape becomes a digital MPG file I have purchased proper Video editing software ( Cyberlink Powerdirector) that permits me to improve the video for such things as white balance, colour, contrast, audio improvements ...etc. as well as cutting out segments and making discrete scenes.
Beside using the main VHS deck I attach via the external connection my ancient Sony 8 mm cam recorder and can also now convert my 8mm tapes to.
I actually capture the videos to my laptop but do the editing on my 64-Bit computer and have no performance issues. To be able to convert and preserve my old videos is worth every nickel for what I paid for the product which is really not expensive. I can recommend this product to anyone.

The quality of the video capture is poor. The movie playback keeps pausing. I captured it on SP mode. On the LP mode it is very grainy. The software is very limited. You can edit out a piece, but you can't divide it or make jump points with thumbnails. Also it will not hold 2 hours on a DVD in SP mode. Hold about 1:45. Works with window XP & Vista, but not on a Mac. The price was good if you want to keep your movies on your PC and not burn to DVD. I wanted this as a backup for converting video to DVD, but it is too low quality to use professionally.

Comments about VCR-2-PC USB Videotape Conversion Player:
I had no problems setting the device up using Windows 7. I just went to the ION website, downloaded the updated drivers and software and BOOM, it works great! I have now transferred about 25 VHS tapes to my computer and am preserving them and gaining some much needed storage space. I have tried other methods of trying to get VHS on to DVD or in MPEG format, but this device makes it very simple to do and I've had better results. The video quality is acceptable since the VHS quality wasn't great to begin with. I do wish the software provided more video compression choices, because the MPEG files are rather large when set to best quality. You could always use another 3rd party software to covert the video into a smaller format, but it's certainly not required if you have a lot of hard drive space. In short, I'm happy I bought it and am overall very pleased with the results!

Initially a problem because I have Windows 7 and software is for Vista & XP. [...] I called ION, on hold 47 minutes BUT they walked me through downloading and installing drivers online and made sure it worked. Once that was all over I started using immediately and everyday since. Easy to use. Easy to Edit. Easy to burn. I have already recommended to my best friend.

Comments about VCR-2-PC USB Videotape Conversion Player:
This device would not instasll on my HP DEC Z556 with Windows XP Media Center. Each time I plugged in the USB cable it would lock up my system requiring a power down and re-boot to recover. All other USB devices work on this machine with no problems. I was able to install it on my Vista machine without any problems, but, I purchased it specifically for my HP DEC. That aside, the software is easy to use and straight forward but there are a few short comings. The PC has no control over the ion device which makes its operation all manual from the front panel. Also there is no remote. However, it does do what it is intented to do which is to copy VHS videos to a PC. I see no advantage for this product over using any VHS player with one of the many inexpexsive USB video capture devices available. The quality appears to match that of most of the cheap VCRs so I don't think it will be durable. Every VCR I owned "gave it up" after very little use so I expect no more from this product.

Great for archiving old VHS tapes. I have been looking for an easy way to do this for a few years. The only thing it does not do that I would like to see is let you pause the recording so you can change VHS tapes to combine more than one in a file. I plan to use pinnacle software to combine files when I edit the tapes. The quick edit feature on the ion is good for condensing files before you burn them to the DVD

Comments about VCR-2-PC USB Videotape Conversion Player:
[...]. Had a little trouble loading the device drivers from the disc using Windows 7, but downloaded & installed via Ion's website & Windows device manager with no further problems. Video quality is as good as the VHS being transferred. I recommend fast forwarding/rewinding the VHS to resettle it. This helped reduce video/audio drops from tapes that haven't been played in years and tend to stick. Nice preview window in the Ion software for cueing and monitoring the actual transfer. Initially preview didn't work because I needed the switch on front of unit set to "tape," not "other." Records in MPEG-2, no other options. Included software allows for converting for other devices. I tried converting an MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 for iPhone, but seemed to take way too long, so I used Adobe Premiere instead. Video & audio inputs on front of unit, so you should be able to import media from other devices, although I haven't tried yet. Ultimately, the device lets you efficiently & affordably transfer VHS video. If I had an especially important video, I'd also have a professional with the right tools/skills transfer the tape and clean up the audio/video, but this is cost prohibitive for doing volume transfers as I did, so the ION VCR 2 PC is great for this.

works extremely well for copying your vcr tapes to your pc. The only improvement I would suggest would be to make the setting the time of your vcr tape a lot quicker. Thanks for a great product.

Comments about VCR-2-PC USB Videotape Conversion Player:
Just received a 13 step procedure from ION stating that one must go to the internet to download a driver. Evidently the disk does not have the required software at least for windows 7. Do not know if I will be able to use this product. So far I have wasted 2 days futilely trying to install it and 2 days waiting for info from technical support. The instructions that came with the product are inadequate and the software disk does not contain the software needed to install. Rated 1 star though it is zero but can't submit without at least 1 star.

Comments about VCR-2-PC USB Videotape Conversion Player:
We had VHS-C tapes we wanted to convert to DVD. It arrived on the day promised when ordered and came with a quick-start guide, that anyone with any computer knowledge probably wont need. I still had the converter cassette for the C tape.
I connected the USB to my laptop, the drivers loaded instantly. The latest software was available for download, again, easy. However, the picture is small on the laptop, and it does not come with the y/b video/audio cord. But, you can connect the video to the monitor (TV) and the audio plays through the USB to the computer speakers. I used a video jack I already had.
The tapes played; were easily recorded; and, can be burned to dvd with a couple clicks of the mouse. The quality of the copy, of course, was directly related to the quality of the tape. You can attempt to improve some "noise" with the basic tracking buttons, which did improve some old tapes.
For the price, I highly recommend this converter; if you have VHS that you want to convert to dvd. And, if you have them, you should convert them. It could not be any easier. I now plan to work on my editing skills.
