The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS5 Digital Camera provides easy and simple operation for users at every level of photographic expertise to enjoy taking beautiful pictures. Despite its remarkably compact and slim body, the stylish DMC-FS5 provides an impressive 1/2.33-inch 10.1-megapixel High Resolution CCD to capture all of the exquisite detail of the scene, and its Wide Angle 4x Optical Zoom (30 - 120mm equivalent) Leica DC Vario-Elmar Lens, permitting you to easily capture a large group of people, or expansive architectural structures and landscapes with dynamic width and rich perspective.
The telephoto end of the camera's zoom can also be extended an additional 7.1x (when shooting 2.5 megapixel or less) with minimal loss of image quality thanks to the Extra Optical Zoom feature. There is also an Easy Zoom feature that shifts the lens instantly to full zoom at the touch of a button - great for quickly capturing sudden facial expressions or close-up action. The DMC-FS5 can also record WVGA (848 x 480) motion images at 30 fps for impressive viewing on a wide-screen HDTV Display, in addition to standard VGA (640 x 480) & QVGA (320 x 240) options.
The DMC-FS5 features Panasonic's exclusive iA (Intelligent Auto) mode, which comprises 5 shooting-assist functions (Mega O.I.S., Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Scene Selector, Face Detection and Quick AF functions), to get the best results from every shooting opportunity. Once you enter iA mode, these multi-capable functions engage simultaneously and automatically so you can shoot without the bother of adjusting settings every time conditions change, and you can enjoy the satisfaction that comes with capturing clear, beautiful images -at all times. All of these great automated features are driven by the latest high performance Venus Engine IV image processor, which also provides stunning responsiveness with fast burst capability (up to 6 fps) and an almost instantaneous shutter.
The DMC-FS5 sports a 2.5-inch high resolution LCD screen with the innovative Intelligent LCD function, which detects the ambient lighting condition and controls the brightness & contrast level of the LCD so it is easy to view in any environment. Plus, the High Angle mode makes the LCD screen extremely easy to view when the camera is held high, such as when shooting over a crowd.
The cameras slideshow setting comes equipped with a musical option, allowing users to listen to music while viewing their images and giving emotional impact when desired. Altogether with its attractive metal finish, and sleek and stylish design, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS5 is a digital camera that you'll be happy to carry with you everywhere.

As a Canon junky (well, not anymore), I was a little reluctant to purchase this, but based on the reviews, I'm glad I did. As a great second camera, I couldn't be more pleased. My previous point-and-shoots were Canons, and they both died prematurely.
My photography professor in college was a Leica disciple, so seeing the Leica lens made a good impression on me. (Although truthfully, after 20 years, I really don't know if the Leica mystique and quality still holds true.)
The interface of the camera is quick and easy to use. The images are fantastic -- very sharp and properly saturated. The manual exposure controls are well done, so it's easy to get nice results without using the strobe. (And believe me, there is NO point-and-shoot camera with a decent flash that produces decent results. It's impossible.) Battery life seems fine.
Overall, a great value, good construction, and excellent results. Before you puchase a subcompact Canon, take a look at the Lumix models -- you'll be very impressed.

Tried a big name competing brand and was very disappointed. As a staunch fan of the Lumix FZ30 (fabulous camera!!) I then went ahead and got the FS5. While a huge improvement it still doesn't measure up to the standards set by my FZ. Extremely easy to use, size is great...just the image quality is not as sharp as I'd like. I have gotten plenty of good shots, I was just hoping for more consistency.

I bought this during Christmas. It was very handy to shoot pictures at family gathering. Good and sharp lens, and video quality is good. Optical stabilization really made difference under low light situation. Body construction feels decent.
Wish battery life is longer.

Great camera that takes beautiful pictures right out of the box. Helps to read the manual because there are loads of features, but not necessary to get going right away. Rapid shot confusing at first but once you get used to it very fun tool. Wide display. Just got it and still getting used to it, but not disappointed so far. Wouldn't recommend for serious photography but perfect for having in a pocket for travel and fun shooting. Great price!

I purchaced this camera for my teenage son for christmas. I was impressed by the slim design, large LCD and Leica lens. The Colors and detail in the photos are amazing. I would recommend this camera for a casual photographer who wants great photos on vacations, birthday parties, etc. Again you get a real bang for the buck here.

I got this for work/general snapping of every day shots.
It worked great for xmas. The Pics are great, video is good too.
Only complaint is that the video files are huge!
Just 120 minutes @ high quality on 8GB card (though they are cheap enough)

Once you get used to such a wide LCD screen, you can't go back to a smaller one. The wide angle and the stabilizer are very useful.

Great camera, bought 1 for my daughter, and liked it so much bought another for my son. I've always had good luck with the lumix cameras/leica lens. This new model has 10.1 mp, and has the auto intelligence [ai] for a great easy experience. It has a quick response when in AI mode.
