When it comes to cameras, I've been old-school, manual 35mm SLR, both personally and semi-professionally for almost 30 years.
When planning for a recent first-trip to Disney, I went on a quick search for a pocket sized digital that I could carry more easily. Enlisting the assitance of a professional photographer friend and reading various reviews he pointed me towards, I chose this little jewel of a camera.
When it arrived the day before we left for our trip, I was surprised by just how small it is - barely a palmful!
Having never owned a digital camera before, I was hopeful but skeptical that I'd made a good choice.
Fast forward ten days, and I've spent eight days at Disney, I'm on my third 4gb SD card, I've taken almost 1,300 pictures and who knows how many minutes of video. General scenery shots, self-portraits, family shots, pictures of flowers, crouds, fireworks, buildings, daytime, night-time, sunset, and video clips.
I still have to get used to the focus time. I can't claim that I could always focus faster manually, but there are occassions when I think so.
Patience when using high zoom settings is strongly recommended, and I have my share of out-of-focus and missed shots, to prove it.
To be fair to the camera, these were typically user error, either by using the wrong setting or trying to squeeze off a shot before the camera was ready.
I like the video setting, but must remember to keep the camera horizontal! The video is not self-correcting for camera position and that makes watching videos on television kind of strange. It would be nice if you could maintain auto-focus and zoom control while taking videos, but with this being primarily a still camera, I can understand why those are not available.
In bright daylight, the lcd was sometimes hard to see, but most of the time it provides a very clear, sufficiently bright image.
Rechargable Ni-MH batteries, a spare pair, and a quick recharger are a must. I found that a 2450mAh pair gave very good service.
At this point, I'm still learning all of what this little camera can do, but I am greatly satisifed with its overall performance and the resulting photos.
Beautiful colors, sharp focus (when I let the autofocus do its job), and considerable detail in the photos.
Reasonably short learning curve for the basic features, and a fairly easy-to-understand operators manual.
Controls are easy to function and fairly intuitive. (the lack of an optical viewer took some getting used to, but that's just me)
As for my personal opinion, this camera has proven the old saying true - good things come in small packages.
I look forward to many, many more digital pictures.

I have used this camera 10 times in the last week & found nothing to complain about. It's heavy duty & yet small construction will allow for typical punishment most of us give our cameras. Aluminum instead of plastic construction is great. Great features such as 5x optical, use of AA batteries, large viewing screen & a main on-off switch instead of a button are all nice.

This camera is easy to use and takes great pictures with the default program modes. I am impressed with the low light capability and how little noise is in those images.

Very easy to use. Images are great for a compact camera. Purchased for my wife. Eats batteries...so keep a few spares with the camera.

I purchased this camera for my 14y/o for Christmas. This is a perfect first camera; at this price point, it offers a ton of great features and the images are sharper than expected. I would definitely recommend this camera for basic point-and-shoot use.

It is very simple for a beginner to use but it has features for a more advanced photographer.It is small and easy to tuck in a pocket so it is always handy.

Got it just in time for beach vacation and it was perfect. For this price point, it is very high quality and two friends are already ready to buy (I've had this thing only one week). I went straight point and shoot on auto settings with great results, but look forward to experimenting with more manual adjustments, different resolutions, etc. Struggled a little in very-high and very-low light conditions (just like with every film or digital camera I've had), but the pictures were still adequate with a tiny tweak on my computer later in photo editing software. Buy rechargeable batteries or do not review and delete large numbers of photos on your camera on battery power (move them to your computer and go through them there)--that is the part that eats batteries (just using the camera to shoot, the batteries lasted pretty well). It is great to use regular "AA" batteries instead of special size photo batteries incase you are in a pinch and need fresh ones from the convenience store.

This is my first digital camera and I was looking for one that was easy to use, small enough to take anywhere, flexible enough that I could be creative with it when I wanted, and reasonably priced. The images I have taken so far are sharper than I had imagined were possible with this type of camera. The Lumix DMC-LZ8 has exceeded my expectations on all levels.

Very fast. Sutter lag time is very fast. Very intelligent focus system. Good Price performance.Nice and Easy menu setup. Goog for amaterus fotos. Zoom handle buttons are not easy for adjustments.
