It does exactly what it says it will: is more comfortable than the stock eyepiece, blocks stray light better, the rubber spins so you can use either eye in vertical or horizontal orientation.

Looks and feels high quality, snaps into place snugly, makes it easier to hold the camera against my head to keep it steadier.

If you never put the camera against your forehead, you won't need this; if you do (of course you do!), the you need this.

There are a couple different models, but the Hoodman site is clear about which one fits which camera models. Pick the right one and enjoy!

Installation on my Canon 40D was straightforward, and the eyepiece fits securely. It is very effective at blocking peripheral light, and it is more comfortable than the stock eyecup. A few observations: - You have to put the eyecup to your eye more precisely than with the stock Canon eyecup, and that takes a little practice before it becomes second nature. - The eyecup allows the camera to be held more firmly to your head without discomfort, which improves stability. - The eyecup needs to be rotated when you switch from horizontal to vertical, although the eyecup is pliable enough that you can just mash it to your eye socket without rotating it if you're in a hurry. - The eyecup blocks a good portion of the LCD screen on my 40D, but not enough that I'll forgo using it.What I can't reconcile is the cost. Unless you are horribly distracted by peripheral light, it's hard to justify [$] for a small piece of rubber and plastic. I would call it a good value at $10, but grossly overpriced as it is now.4 out of 5 stars for design and functionality, 1 out of 5 for value.

Comments about Hoodman HoodEye for Canon EOS Cameras:

The HoodEye was very easy to install and was certainly affordable enough. I shoot mostly nature scenes with landscapes and wildlife, so the HoodEye has been great for blocking out unwanted sunlight outdoors. I also love that I don't have to contort mash my nose up against the LCD screen quite so much to get a clear look out of the view finder. The HoodEye does block a little bit of the LCD screen, but it hasn't bothered me. My only complaint is that the rubber eyepiece doesn't turn quite as quickly/smoothly as I would have liked when changing camera angles. Perhaps this is just because it is still new. Otherwise, a great product!

Comments about Hoodman HoodEye for Canon EOS Cameras:

I added this little gadget to my Canon 40D to help block out extraneous light when shooting outdoors. It does its job quite well. Sticks out a little farther than the stock eyepiece though, but it gives me a bit more clearance...a good thing when my face is stuck to the back of the camera for hours at a time. Also the rubber surround is easily rotated to accomodate vertical or horizontal shooting.

With its larger diameter it does overlap a small part of the LCD, but not enough to be distracting to me. It has proven to be a handy gadget indeed.

I purchased the Eye hood because of Sunlight glare and other light distractions. I am and was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to attach and I was able to immediately see the benefits. The eye piece closes around the eye and helps you to focus on your subject. I would recommend it Highly.
      As for Con's: I don't have any.

      Nice Eyecup With Tradeoffs

Comments about Hoodman HoodEye for Canon EOS Cameras:

This eyecup is well made and comfortable. It is readily reversible (in place, if necessary) for use with left or right eye. I have two concerns in using it on my Canon Rebel XS.

The first concern is that the hood obscures the upper right corner of the LCD screen, roughly 1 cm down and 2.5 cm across (viewed straight on), in both left and right configurations. It also obscures the MENU and DISP buttons, but does not impair access with the left thumb.

The second concern I have is with mounting. For reference, the Canon-supplied eyecup is a u-shape with a plastic brace across the opening of the "u". This plastic bar does not interfere with sliding the eyecup on and off. The Canon eyecup is held in place by two little springy plastic latches, one on each side of the "u" opening. One wonders how they will hold up to frequent insertion/removal, although this would be uncommon in my use were it not for the HoodEye, which I interchange with the Canon eyecup from time to time.

The HoodEye has an analogous plastic reinforcing bar which is also the retaining latch (it latches under the view finder frame). During installation and removal, there is an interference between this bar and the viewfinder face. Thus the HoodEye goes on and off (none too smoothly, as it tends to "rack") at an angle to the eyepiece mounting channels. The channels and latching bar of course are plastic. This won't be a problem if you install the HoodEye and leave it in place, but because it obscures part of the screen and two buttons, you may be removing and reinstalling it from time to time, hence durability may be an issue.

There are two little "wings", one on each side of the latching bar, to assist in unlatching. These are difficult to use in my opinion, especially if one's fingernails are very short. Again, it shouldn't be an issue if the HoodEye is installed "once and done."

This eyepiece has made it much more comfortable to use my camera, whether I have my glasses on or off. With that said, I no longer need to remove my glasses to compose a photo. I take a lot of nature photo, primarily of birds and I need to be able to frame a photo quickly. This has made a very positive impact for me

It's cheap $$, it's simple, and it just WORKS.

I was repeatedly fogging my 60D screen. I use my left eye and it always fogged, no big deal but occasionally I review a shot right after and would wipe it.

This SOLVED that problem, not only that but it does remove stray light so the viewfinder is slightly easier to use.

Ordered this to use with a Vortex Media Pro SLR Storm Jacket Camera Cover. Not only did it work perfectly with the storm cover, it actually eases eye strain and allowed me to shoot with both eyes open with no problem. My only grip and it's small one, is that it blocks my view screen a little and it's in the way when I try to turn it. I have a flip out view screen (Canon 60D). Otherwise, I just pop it on when ready to go out shooting. See my review for the Vortex Media Pro SLR Storm Jacket Camera Cover for more on my review of the Hoodeye.

Great product, does what it is designed to do. I think however that if it were round instead of pear shaped then going to the portrait orientation would be easier on the eye. Overall a good product. Slightly pricey but worth the money.

Overpriced for what it is, but at least the quality is good. I knew if I went the cheaper route I would've ended up regretting it. The rubber is soft and the fit and finish is good. I can't understand Canon's factory eye"cups", they're square and have no cushion against your eye socket. The HoodEye does obstruct part of the LCD screen though, but that's a minor trade off for a more sensible eyeCUP and almost a non-issue with me. Overall pleased with it.

Comments about Hoodman HoodEye for Canon EOS Cameras:

I first saw a Hoodman eye piece on the Canon 1D of the professional photographer at the zoo, and at the time assumed it was standard on the higher end cameras. Haha. Now I wish I had researched it earlier! My original eyepiece has been falling off for years, and I finally lost it permanently. The Hoodman is comfortable, blocks all the light that comes from the side making it had to see, and very affordable! This is a must-have accessory.

I like the light-shielding this product offers, but wish it would fold back when using indoors. Also, while it's easy to get on, it takes some effort to get it off.
