The 60mm F2.8G is the worthy descendent and successor of the legendary 55mm F2.8 micro. I use this lens for copying old photos, landscape and even people picture. The F2.8 aperture gives me a bright image in the viewfinder, and the nano coating helps to reduce ghosting and reflection, reducing the hotspot and glare. I consider this lens for good overall usage, in my opinion if you have this lens you shouldn't have to buy the 50mm F1.4, unless you constantly 'must' shoot at that setting. The glass is much flatter which means distortion is virtually non-existence, no exaggeration, just faithful reproduction of what you see through the viewfinder.

A macro lens without a manual aperture ring sure disables the ability to use some of the traditional macro gear like bellows. I still cannot believe that Nikon would design a lens targeted at macro photography without working in an aperture ring. Still, this lens gets plenty close without further extension... maybe too close for many subjects. I so prefer to have the aperture be from the ring when I'm working in tight situations. But oh well.
But aside from the "G," 60mm is a little wide for bugs, and might yield too much perspective distortion on some objects when you attempt to fill the frame at close range. The 105mm VR and the 3rd party macro offerings up to 150mm by Sigma might be worth considering.
It's not built like a tank... nor is it built like a flower. But with its light weight, it feels like a reasonable construction design and adds little weight.
As far as using it as a portrait lens, well, again the optics are great for it; however, if you're doing really close-in work rather than traditional portraits, well, I'd still prefer my 50mm f/1.2 AIS or the 50 f/1.4 just for the shallow DOF.
The front element is not very much recessed compared to other true macro lenses ... so do be careful around pollen-bearing objects and other things that might soil or damage your glass. If you put a filter on this thing, remove it for macros... and use a high-end filter like a B+W for the rest of the time. Don't spoil the great optics with inferior glass.
Focus is absolutely fast.

There are really no flaws in this design. This lens has all the modern Nikkor attributes and deliver consistent, sharp and high contrast results across the frame. Being a "micro" lens, curvature of filed is almost inexistent, allowing for stunning, distortion-free imagery. The lens is well built, weather-sealed and light enough to make an excellent standard lens for general photography. Highly recommended.

Produces great, sharp macro images. Autofocus is obviously tuned for macro work, as it has a tendency to hunt a little at medium and long ranges. Also, maximum aperture is f/2.8, but that's when focused to infinity. At minimum focus distance, max aperture is f/4.8. Great build quality.

I have owned this lens for a couple of weeks now and I really like it. Pictures are extremely sharp, detailed and have good contrast. I have been using it for still life macro as well as a general medium telephoto on my D300. It's a little bit slow for everyday use and I find that it hunts for focus (goes to infinity and back before locking) in moderate light. Not really a concern for macro/tripod use though. In good light the autofocus is incredibly fast and accurate. I tried both this lens and the 105mm micro-Nikkor at the store and found the 105mm to be too large and the focus was not as quick and as silent compared to the 60mm. As others have noted you have to get really close to your subject at minimum focus, but I have not found it to be any trouble. Used the lens recently to take close-up photos of some camera gear that I am selling. The detail from this lens is amazing.

I use this lens for food photography and for shooting jewelry on a Nikon D90 and D700 and I really like the great IQ and super bokeh. The 105mm VR micro lens from Nikkor achieves a smoother bokeh, but it is too zoomed for me while the 60mm has a wider view for the food. Really like this light, fast macro lens. Can't give you any cons yet, but will let you know soon.

I have had this lens for a couple of weeks now. All in all I think it is a great lens for the money. Very sharp photos. I have taken some flower shots with it with great luck. I primarily use it as a portrait lens with my D5000. Works great there too. All around good lens. Sometimes I think the auto focus isn't as fast as I would like, but that might be the body I am using.

I bought this lens to do close ups of plants, flowers, and bugs. It is capable of focusing at a very close range, however the closer you get, the less focal depth you get. Just be careful that you're not trying to photograph more than one object. I got many stunning pictures, but whenever there was depth to the subject or say two flowers next to each other, it was not possible to have it all in focus. A handful of times, the auto focus went right past my subject and I had to manually adjust. Despite these complaints, I am pleased with this purchase, and looking forward to using it again.

Although I am new at photography and bought this lens based on someone else's opinion for taking good dental photos, this lens has been producing very fine extraoral and intraoral photos. The downside is that an adapter is required for its use with a ring flash and while the ring flash is on the lens cap cannot be placed to protect it.
