Comments about Manfrotto 158 Female Converter Socket - 5/8" to 5/8" (16mm):
This is the ideal product to couple 5/8" studs. However, what was the point in having one knob and one screw? I replaced the set screw with a modified knob made from a screw and wing nut and it is now completely operable by hand. No tool needed.
My dedicated usage is to join 2 extension poles to have adequate height to place microphones above head level, but am still able to pack the poles under 20" using Matthews extension poles.

Comments about Manfrotto 158 Female Converter Socket - 5/8" to 5/8" (16mm):
I found the set-screw a poor design feature. Why was it used? Why not 2 knobs? My quick fix was a new screw, hex head - 6mm x 1.00 with an attached wing-nut for a grip. Easy on ,easy off, no tool required.
If you need to couple 5/8" studs there is no better alternative.

Comments about Manfrotto 158 Female Converter Socket - 5/8" to 5/8" (16mm):
Manfrotto is quite reliable. I would recommend their products to almost anyone.
However, this piece needs slight alteration in order to comply with the high standard Manfrotto has set. Due to its (plastic) construction, it will not allow for an entirely secure connection with a 5/8'' stand.
Chances are, alterations will be made to this specific converter. For now, beware.
