I mount the 1/4-20 into my PocketWizard TT5 and the center column fits into the 5/8" receptacle in my light stands. These can also be used in a pinch to convert 1/4-20 to 3/8-16, but there are better approaches to that.
High build quality, with no burrs or notched threads.

These spigots are pretty basic: 1/4" male on one end and 3/8" female on the other. They are made of brass so softer and not as strong as some alternatives. Still not sure what that hole in the middle is for but I figure it makes it lighter and easier to manufacturer. If you need something like this then this is one of the few choices out there.

Need it to connect bits together, and while not expensive, seems pricey. But it's the only option for what it does.

A great design that works well with DIY strobist setups. Big hole through middle makes it easy to tighten.

I use this with the bogen nano clamp as a substitute for a stud because it is so much lighter. It leaves me with a reducing clamping area because of the hole but it is so light :)

Comments about Manfrotto 118 Universal Short Spigot with Double Male Thread:
Although the 1/4-20 and 3/8" spigot is a staple in every photographers arsenal, the bottom-line is quality construction and value. A+++ on both counts for the 118 Universal Short Spigot with Double Male Thread by Manfrotto.
Highly recommended.
