Comments about Manfrotto 025BSL Super Boom ONLY, Black - 8.8' (2.7 m):
I've used this specific type of boom many times over the years of my career as a Photo Assistant and now a Pro Photographer. It has always proved a reliable and useful tool to put a light over and above/behind a subject in an easy manner while retaining the ability to fine tune the direction of the light w/o needing to climb a ladder.
I've seen many of these abused and put thru their paces and still work as needed. If you take reasonable care of it, the boom will give you many years of service.
The main problems of wear and tear usually involve the tightening handles, which can strip over time. But, I noticed when I received my new boom, that the handles are now METAL! They used to be plastic. So that should be a more durable part now. The adjustment cranks are still plastic, so that might be the weakest link.
I bought the boom by itself. The stand that usually comes in the set is a little underweight for my taste. I use a Matthews Medium Roller instead. It rolls smoother and is a bit more stable and safe. Of course, that costs more money also.
Overall, a good product. I would have rated it 5 stars, the only minus is the price. As with most things related to photo, it's a bit high.

Comments about Manfrotto 025BSL Super Boom ONLY, Black - 8.8' (2.7 m):
The big deal about this boom assembly is the ability to change the direction of the light head with the hand cranks located at the end of the boom. Esp. when the light head is high over a set. Certainly saves time! Highly recommended!
However...the screw knob that holds it to the light stand was not included. (And it's a fussy 6mm metric size...hard to find! Had to rob one from a swivel bracket that I already had. :( )

Comments about Manfrotto 025BSL Super Boom ONLY, Black - 8.8' (2.7 m):
I have used my old boom everyday in a studio setting for 20 years,
finally wore out the gears. Did not hesitate to order another one. I was
glad I could order the boom separately since my base was still working fine.
The boom will save you a lot of time adjusting your overhead light. Well
worth the money.

It's a great boom. The handles/cranks make it easy to ajust, whatever is on the end of it!
