Summary: BE EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS IN SETTING DOWN YOUR CAMERA/LENS WHEN YOU HAVE THE BATTERY GRIP ON!!!!

The battery grip functions perfectly; I love the vertical release shutter / AE . Excellent solution to where to put the battery cover when you're using the grip (you have to attach the batter cover to the grip [it wont work otherwise]). The Grip adds needed weight, more importantly something to truly "grip" onto when handholding the camera (otherwise, since this camera has a relatively small body, those of us with large hands find very, very, little space to actually hold the camera - Im not sure why there's no left hand grip space on the body.)
Besides all those niceties, the battery grip just looks darn sylish! It moves the camera into the category of, "don't put it away, set it out just to look at it" beautiful.

It my opinion, it would be worth every penny you can spend on it, if it weren't for its one very serious flaw that devalues it - it's mold is out of spec. Yes, its built like a tank, wonderous in operation, and a sight to behold, but the bottom IS NOT LEVEL!!!!!!

Put it on your camera with no lens attached, and you'll be fine. Put in on the camera with even the KIT lens attached, and it the whole camera wobbles effortlessly. Yep, one slight nudge forward, and it falls over. I learned the hard way when I first bought it.

I contacted Canon Customer Service (online) and was told I would have to send it in for service, and if no technical problem was found with the grip, they would send it back. I told the rep there is NO TECHNICAL PROBLEM WITH THE GRIP, rather its built out of spec, and the only way to fix it was to send me another one from a different batch. The last reply was I would have to take it up with Tech Support once I sent it in.

Hold it! Don't throw in the towel yet on the BG-E5. Here is the solution that works from me. I simply went to the hardware store and bought builders molding tape/puddy. I reshaped the bottom of the grip and painted it black. Now, no matter what lens I put on, (even put the 70-200mm f2.8L on it), its rock solid. In fact, because the molding "tape" (more like puddy) is very sticky, and retains its final shape, I put it down, and it sticks - literally - in the spot i put it. I would have to force it to fall over now.

Hey Canon, maybe you should think about adding such material to the bottom of your camera bases and grips. Sticky rubber!

In summary, great product, functionally excellent, visually stunning, built like a tank...but BE EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS IN SETTING DOWN YOUR CAMERA/LENS WHEN YOU HAVE THE BATTERY GRIP ON!!!! BEWARE.

In light of this, I don't believe the cost should be as advertised... I think B&H has just the right price for this product.

I'd love an ISO button but they gotta do something to make it more of an entry level device, since it is going on a Rebel series camera. Its usefulness is far exceeded by that one lack of a feature.

One atypical thing is its fit. It seems loose on my body, and I've never seen that happen on a Canon grip before. I use it on the Rebel XSi, and when fully torqued down, it still "pivots" around the tripod mount. It doesn't fall off but also doesn't instill confidence. My guess is it's because the camera's battery compartment is mounted with the length of the body instead of along the grip, maybe allowing more play. But I'm no engineer. Again, doesn't change the function of it.

Comments about Canon BG-E5 Battery Grip:

Makes my Rebel Xsi feel like a professional full frame. The fit and finish are top notch, fits seamlessly with the rest of the camera. Attachment to the camera body was very simple, works as promised. Also bought a second battery to go with it, now I'll never have to worry about running out of power on a shoot. Only thing to be careful about is that the camera will tip forward easily if left standing flat with a heavy lens attached, but that is to be expected. B+H pricing and service is unbeatable, nothing like it up here in Canada, highly recommended. Very happy with product, could not ask for anything else (digital readout, etc.) at this price point.

Comments about Canon BG-E5 Battery Grip:

Canon quality is evident throughout. Absolutely nothing negative to be said here .... I have fairly average hands, and my T1i felt very small and a bit difficult to hold ....adding the grip made the camera fit my hand beautifully. Very much appreciate the additional shutter buttom when shooting in portrait configuration. Great purchase .... made greater by the good folks at B&H

Comments about Canon BG-E5 Battery Grip:

I photograph many Blues bands in CA and NV, from small clubs to large festivals. It can be very competitive with so many photogs out there. We all compete to get our photos on Blues websites and in magazines. I bought the handle grip and find it incredibly useful. Not only does it give me the battery power to keep shooting without missing a great shot by having to replace the battery but it also gives me an easily accesible shutter button when I'm taking a portrait shot. I love the grip because it adds a bit more weight to make the camera more stable but not enough to make it too heavy. It also adds a more pro look and feel to a smaller camera body. I also love the feel of the grip as it is very natural and comfortable. It fits the camera nice and tight unlike the aftermarket brands, because after all it is Canon. If you want to go pro or at least look pro then buy this battery grip! You won't regret it.

I keep my battery grip on my camera 95% of the time. It works beautifully. Before I had it I would be so embarrassed by my camera while working with clients because my camera would work so slow. Now its quick, efficient and long lasting. The battery grip works wonderfully for portraits as well because of its side buttons.

Comments about Canon BG-E5 Battery Grip:

I purchased the battery grip being very double minded it whether to buy the canon grip or a third party grip (which would save me a few dollars for sure)... And I am glad i purchased the canon one.

                              Reasons
First: It snuggles my rebel t1i. I mean there is no gap or any kind of opening in between the camera and grip. It felt like a part of my camera which was earlier missing. You wont know it till you own it.

Second : It feels soo durable, the feel of the grip is awesome. It gives the right signals to the camera of the battery life that still exists within the batteries.

Third : Its "Canon". The label it carries of canon in front of the grip makes it even more special. I mean i cant imagine what it would if I had the label of zeikos or bower in front of it. I would maybe think twice before showing my new accessory to anyone. (well that's just my personal outlook towards things)

Last : Shots come out great with a grip added. this is just on a whole if u are considering to buy a grip or not. Battery life is awesome. Though, there is a slight adjustment needed in positioning ur hands (it feels way above) if you having it for the first time in portrait mode and the View finder feels in an awkward position but well you will get you use it for sure.

conclusion: yes buy the original canon stuff, it makes to feel complete and not even half full.

Comments about Canon BG-E5 Battery Grip:

I purchased this product just befor my little brothers graduation ceremony and party. I have not been disappointed. The dual Battery feature is awesome, and the AA battery holder is just an added bonus. So far the grip has had about 2000 pictures taken with it and I can't wait to take more.

Comments about Canon BG-E5 Battery Grip:

I like having a battery grip to make my camera body a bit bigger. I have large hands, and with some heavy glass attached I want to have a solid grip on the camera. Having all the controls when shooting portrait mode it nice too. The grip also enables having a hand-strap attached, which I also seem to be enjoying. Having the option to swap to AA batteries seems like a nice safety-net, though I've yet to need to use it. It feels like there is a slight wiggle despite being tightened down but I rarely notice it when shooting.

a friend of mine had a similar pack connected to his nikon. it seemed like a great idea. i thought going from landscape to portrait would be easy due to the extra shutter release. i also figured it would add stability because of the added weight. i was right. i simply love this product and should have purchased it long ago.

I'm using this grip to photograph sports events like people running, bike racer, etc... it gave more time without change batteries and a good hands position to make photos in portrait mode, my shoulder doesn't hurt anymore.

Comments about Canon BG-E5 Battery Grip:

Recently purchased the BG-E5 batt grip for my Canon Rebel Xsi and I am so glad I got it from here rather than in store!

It came with both the lithium and a AAbattery insert where as in store you can only get one (or pay for extra to buy the other separately) It was suuuuper easy to attach, and fits my hand perfectly with no slipage. I also love that it has a shutter button and apt control wheel on the grip for vertical use that isn't awkward!

Makes me camera heavier of course, but it looks pro and for me, I am just starting out professionally, (this is my extra camera for wedding use) its great as I don't have to worry about batteries and all that nonsense.

Comments about Canon BG-E5 Battery Grip:

I am a starting photographer have had my XSI for around 2 yrs and have been buying more equipment as I can. I bought this grip last week and used it saturday for an event and it worked great!!!! I had no worries about killing my battery's and with my Speedlite flash and longer lens it give me a lot more to hold on to on the camera to supplement the extra weight before it was a bit to small filling after adding everything on. Also the ability to use all the setting and take pics in portrait was great I was able to do a lot of artistic and fun pics with out have to hold the camera in awkward positions. The only thing I wish it came with was a piece to plug the camera into the wall with to use on a tripod and the ability to use the battery's to add to the flash power as well, but overall Excellent product!!
