Gitzo GS5511S Rapid 6x Carbon Fiber Center Column - for Series 4 & 5 Systematic
This Gitzo GS5511S Rapid Carbon Fiber Center Column is for use with Series 4 and 5 6x tripods in the Systematic line. Since these tripods accept interchangeable center columns, this compact column can be used to take full advantage of the variable leg spread on these units, so that you are not inhibited by the length of the column as to how low you can go.

Even though the series 5 tripod is tall enough without the center column, when working at near ground, or other than full open position, the center head provides losts of flexibility. I have my Swiss-Arca ball head on the column and leave it in the padded pag. If I need to switch, it takes five minutes to remove center plate and insert column. I get two tripods for one to cover any need or conditions I might have. Must have option if you trek in remote locations like I do and need to carry what ever you might need.

Bought my tripod with base flat plate, which I use for Wimberley gimbal head. Added the center column for regular use, with Acratech leveling base and ball head.
Column is light, and very stable, even extended.
I did buy good quality T-30 Torx wrenches to replace the cheap one that Gitzo supplies.

Smooth, rapid movement.
Great for extra height and fast adjustability when needed.

Pretty simple to install and use. Great for subtle height adjustments and to keep the tripod squared away when folded. If you remove the locking rubber top piece it mates perfectly with the Arca Cube, it is as though they were made for each other.

Because of the large top-plate of the tripod, it's a lot easier to use a geared head with this center column. And for some situations it's a nice to be able to adjust the height more quickly.
