The Gitzo GS2511KB Carbon 6X Low Level Column Kit is for use with series 2 tripods, and is of intermediate length between the standard center column originally supplied with these tripods, and the very short columns previously supplied as a separate accessory. Its length is designed to provide the lowest shooting angle of the tripod, with the legs not extended but opened to the widest angle.
The kit consists of a 6X-type carbon fiber tube, plus the necessary components for the Ground Level Set feature: a machined aluminum Safe Lock upper disc, redesigned reversible screw, and hook assembly.
This shorter column allows the user to take full advantage of the variable leg spread of the tripod, so that you are not inhibited by the length of the column as to how low to the ground you can go.

Comments about Gitzo GS2511KB Carbon 6X Low Level Column Kit:
With a Gitzo 2531 not quite short enough. I agree with a previous poster that it needs to be about 1 1/2 inches shorter to take full advantage of the tripod when legs at the maximum spread position. I like it, just wish it was a tad shorter.

Comments about Gitzo GS2511KB Carbon 6X Low Level Column Kit:
This allows rapid exchange between gimbal and ball heads for my larger lens, grants lower ground clearance and reduces what I have to carry while maintaining flexibility of lens choice in the field.

Comments about Gitzo GS2511KB Carbon 6X Low Level Column Kit:
Combined with the self leveling 6X tripod, the short center column allows me to lower the Gitzo tripod to about 7 inches off the ground. Using a Hasselblad H4 with the waist level viewfinder lets me work comfortably at a very low point of view.

Comments about Gitzo GS2511KB Carbon 6X Low Level Column Kit:
I would give it 5 stars but it's about 1.5 inches too long. With the legs on my GT2531 at their lowest angle and the short column touching the ground there is still 1.5 inched of the center post extending above the locking collar. It would be nice to take full advantage of the minimum height without removing the post for the ground level set.

Essential if you do landscapes or need to get close to the ground. Classic Gitzo quality and of course price. Bottom line you need it.

Comments about Gitzo GS2511KB Carbon 6X Low Level Column Kit:
When I open the performance tripod legs "two clicks", the 60 degree position, the standard center post touches the ground beneath. and I need to extend it above the Saflok plate. I use the short post on a GT2942L, a Series 2 eyelevel basalt.
I purchased the Low Level column kit to allow me to position the legs without requiring me to raise the center post, or allowing "just a little" adjustment when needed.
I may make it my standard center post. I think the availability of such accessories for a tripod system is consistent with the finesse of a set of legs like Gitzo's.

Comments about Gitzo GS2511KB Carbon 6X Low Level Column Kit:
I shoot landscapes, and frequently need a low tripod position for the angles which capture close foreground texture.
This column gets me low without having to resort to taking the column out, allowing smooth, fast transition to lower and higher positions, and ultimately more opportunities to capture fleeting light shows and effects.
Haven't discovered any cons.
