This is your nuts and bolts monochrome laser with the added bonus of being wireless.
The default driver software is set to have the unit go in sleep mode automatically. Go ahead and change that to the 90 minute option before it goes to sleep if you intend to print wireless through your home.
Great value. The toner ($30 to $40) is very affordable and prints up to 1,000 sheets before having to be changed. Brother makes great and affordable laser prints.

The printer doesn't come with a USB cord. Although wireless and ethernet connections are supported with both window and Mac interface, it says on the users manual that wired connection is recommended in the initial setup. I was fortunate to find an old USB cord (with one end not a standard USB port that coincidentally fits the printer's USB portal) or otherwise I could never get the setup done.
After I got the USB mode of printing installed, I followed the instruction to set up wireless mode of printing. I reached the point where my Wi-Fi network was detected on the installation screen. Everything was done exactly according to the installation instructions. Then I reboot my laptop (again, as the manual suggested) but the printer was not connected through Wi-Fi. I repeated the above steps many times. I even made sure the Wi-Fi reception point in the printer (a tiny little contact point next to the USB portal) was switched on. After numerous unsuccessful trials, I gave in and now I can only use it through USB connection.
I've read reviews about the successful Wi-Fi set up on PC. So I don't know if the problem is with my Mac OS or with the procedures. Other than that, the printer is of good quality.

I'm using this the HL-21070W as a replacement for a HP multifunction inkjet printer (which will be the last HP printer I ever own given the all of the problems and high cost of the ink cartridges). I'm using it as a network printer for a number of computers in our house and The HL-2170 was easy to setup on my wirless network and was up an running in 10 minutes. I like the compact footprint although the printer is noiser than expected and print quality is good, it isn't quite as high quality as other black and white laser printers I've owned. There doesn't seem to be a power saving mode so I have to turn it on and off when I want to use it rather than letting it run all of the time.

Comments about Brother HL-2170W Laser Printer with Wireless and Wired Networking:
Setup was somewhat complicated and required deviating a little from instructions on the setup card. My approach was to attach the machine to the wired network, use the network assistant to find it, and install the driver. Once configured I removed the machine from the wired network and it worked fine.
You get what you pay for. The construction is a little shoddy but it has yet to fall apart on me (I've printed 30 pages or so total). Other than a slight smell there are no other problems to report and the wireless seems to have a mid to above average range as wireless devices go.

We have about 20 of the Brother HL-2070N printers in our office and when I went to buy another recently, I was a bit disappointed that it was discontinued. We all know that "upgrades" in the computer world don't always mean "better", but as usual, Brother did not disappoint. Speedy, clear and quiet, the 2170W fits right along side it's older sibling. Almost the same small footprint too.

I am a student and printing needs are not a lot....some assignments and notes. I have the wireless one and its absolutely easy to setup. I have 3 computers that print using this printer wirelessly. My only problem is that its feels a bit flimsy...but apart from that no issues

Setting up printer with direct connect was very easy. Setting up the wireless printer was more difficult, but I may be part of the issue with my lack of knowledge about my wireless router. With a little assistance, I'm sure that I will be able to make full use of this printer with my desktop and laptop units.

This printer works great! Pretty small for a laser printer and gets a lot of pages per cartridge. This purchase was a repeat order of the same printer for my home. I have been using one at my office for about a year now. I still haven't been able to setup the wireless printing yet but I'm sure I will get it figured out once I sit down and work on it a little longer.

This might be a great printer at an excellent price, but I have yet to be able to use it. The CD disks that come with the printer contain no drivers for Windows XP. I am still trying to find and install the correct driver.

Does what it advertises. Fairly easy set up. Had some trouble finding the printer on Windows 7 but the XP found it pretty easy. I have a cheap router which was the issue. Had to reset router to make sure no addresses were being shared. Prints very fast and very crisp sharp black and white. I use it for complex engineering drawings and reviewing and this works very well for my needs.

Comments about Brother HL-2170W Laser Printer with Wireless and Wired Networking:
I tried to install cartridge and spent two hours trying to get it back in. Finally gave up and bought a printer from a different manufacturer. The plastic in this machine is so flimsy I suspect it's made to destruct. Also, I'm not crazy about having to replace drums in addition to toner cartridge. This is not well designed for end-users or economical use. Sorry, Brother.

Comments about Brother HL-2170W Laser Printer with Wireless and Wired Networking:
The printer as it functions is great once it is set up-- prints quickly, decent resolution, etc. Getting it running though was not so great, though not terrible either.
I didnt have a cord to so the 'easy' setup option wasnt an option for me, that probably would have helped, but I got the printer going after 10-15 minutes or so of messing with the settings. Installing the toner was easy with the supplied directions. All in all not too bad, and I would buy the printer again knowing what I know now.

Comments about Brother HL-2170W Laser Printer with Wireless and Wired Networking:
This is the second one I have owned. We purchased the 1st one in Sep 09 for my son in college. Between he and his room mate they just finished the toner that came with the printer when school was out May 10. I purchased the second on this month for our home. I was tired of paying what seems like lots of money for miniscule amounts of ink for our multifunction printer. The Brother laser printer was easy to set up and is very quick to print.
So far we have never suffered a paper jam. I use it wirelessly; that too was easy to set up.
And this is all in a MAC environment.
Good printer. I just wish the prices for color laser
printers would drop to under $100 also.
When it comes time to replace the toner cartridge consider the larger one TN-360 and the standard one, a TN-330. Both are fairly cheap from a vendor through the web.
