My original goal was to copy a large collection of ice skating VHS tapes I'd made over the years to DVDs. There are many options on the market for dubbing VHS tape to DVD but in my opinion none are as flexible and economical as the Sony RDR-VX560. The deck is solidly built and appears to be very reliable. I dubbed at least 100 VHS tapes to DVD right out of the box soon after it arrived with not one problem on any of the DVDs. Two things that are especially appealing are the one-touch dubbing and the upscaling of the VHS playback: While most modern DVD players that play back DVD and VHS tapes will upscale a non-high definition DVD to near HD, they dont' upscale the VHS playback at all. The Sony VX560 upscales not just your standard definition DVDs but will also upscale the VHS tapes you playback too! Be prepared for some shock when you see a standard definition tape upscalled to near hi-def - it might shock you or please you - it really depends on the quality of the orignal VHS recording - but in general it's a vast improvement. Most DVD recorders claim "one-touch" dubbing but in reality it's not that simple. Well I was amazed that the VX560 realy is a "one-touch" dubbing deck: when copying your homemade VHS tapes just insert the tape then insert a blank DVD-R (or DVD+R) and press the Tape to DVD dub button and the VX560 will format the blank DVD and copy the VHS tape over to the DVD - it's really that simple, and it works. The same thing with copying a DVD to VHS tape. As with most electronics, many of the functions are on the remote control unit. Same with the VX560, but even so, most of the things you'll want to do can be done directly from the VX560 front panel and don't need the remote. (You will need the remote to initially set up the VX560 to the television it will be used with because it can be adjusted for either 720 or full 1080 hi-definition output to the TV you use it with.) I could have spent three times as much for a dubbing device but the VX560 is a great unit at a truly reasonable price. Of course be advised that you cannot copy any VHS tapes or DVDs that have copy protection but otherwise this is a great tool to covert your home-made tapes to DVD and to watch commercial DVDs and VHS tapes with. The inputs and outputs are OK but it would have been nice to have more input and output options: for example, there's only one S-Video input and no Component Video input. There is an HDMI output and also a Componnent Video output but not an S-Video output (there's also a USB connection). Aside from the input/output issues, overall, I'm very pleased with the VX560.

On the plus side, the DVD picture was quite good. VHS, not so good.
Negatives: (1) On VHS playback, the cover buzzed/rattled and had to have something paced on top to quiet it down. (2) After two weeks, the VHS tape counter stopped working, and the thing would not record correctly. The picture would be fine for about 3 seconds, then it would drift, requiring tracking to come on. Then, the cycle would start over. Changing tapes made no difference.

you can record a DVD to play back in this player. But as far as we can tell, the DVDs won't play on any other DVD player and won't play on a MAC

Like how this DVR talked to my TV during set up, and then was able to easily synch up with the video camera as well. I have not yet recorded with it, yet it looks straight forward with all controls easy to understand and right in front of the display. I don't have any complaints....

The product will be used to make copies of VHS recordings to a DVD so that they can be played on a DVD player instead of a VHS player.
It is easy to use but it would save time if you could transfer from VHS to DVD quickly without having to play the tape at the time.

Comments about Sony RDR-VX560 DVD/VCR Combo Recorder:
This recorder is easy to set up and use, and its recordings on both media are crisp and clean. I would recommend it without reservation but for one drawback. Sony has decided that anyone sophisticated enough to use an HDMI connection will only be watching wide-screen content. This means that with an HDMI connection, the images on old tapes and CDs with an aspect ratio of 4:3 will be stretched to fit a wide screen (i.e., the "normal" screen is not an option). To watch these tapes and CDs undistorted (i.e., to be able to use the "normal" screen), one must resort to a component connection and forego the synching and other advantages of HDMI.

Very simple installation. Works perfectly as a DVD player, but the real stars are earned by easy to use VHS to DVD dubbing.

This unit works well when copying old vhs tapes to dvd format. Excellent self adjusting tracking. I recommend buying it for that reason. Has a lot other
benefits, I.E. HDMI output,RCA output,etc.
I found the unit menu to be pretty comprehensive as I could erase dvd media, enter titles very easily, and optomize recording block size and speed.
Good unit.

I bought this DVR/VCR combination primarily to transfer my collection of video tape home movies to DVD. Never has it been easier for me to set up and begin using a product as this one was. Sony makes it tremendously easy. The quality was superb, and now a large part of my treasured family collection is saved on DVD.

I bought this machine together with JVC DVD/VHS recorder combo DR-MV79B for transfer of the old VHS tapes to DVD for my company. You have to pay more [$] for Sony but it has better interface and outlook. Blank DVD discs are automatically detected and will be formated by Sony. For JVC, you have to do it manually. [...]. Both are simply to use.
