I've been a serious amateur since the 1980's, using SLRs including Nikon's D200. My loving wife bought this camera for me when our twin babies were born because she realized I would not want to lug the big DSLR around with me all day. I read a review of the camera on Ken Rockwell's website and bought it sight unseen. I've been very happy with it. Fits in your pants pocket and, as such, it's always with you and you won't miss a shot. I now take it on my bike commute to work each day and mountain biking.
Very flat learning curve. The first 30 pages explain the menu layout and you can start shooting immediately and make nice images. Works fine on auto but serious shooters will want to explore the manual modes. Very easy to get it into b&w mode. Images appear sharp. Box comes with everything you need except a bigger SD card; the one Canon supplies is nearly useless if you shoot at high quality (and they tell you this in the instruction manual). Get a spare battery if you're going to shoot all day everyday.
Nice camera. The biggest feature for me is size (so I don't lug the DSLR) with a very respectable image quality. Read up about lag time before you buy any camera. People think it's a limiting factor for P&S but all cameras have it and it's easy enough to avoid.

This camera was a gift for my sixteen-year-old son. He likes it because it's small and he can just tuck it in his pocket. He also enjoys taking movies with it.
The problem with cameras this small is (always!) noise. Anything over base ISO (or over 100) is really not worth for anything other than snapshots (although to give credit to Canon happy-snappers is who this little camera is targeted to).

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD790 IS Digital Elph Digital Camera:
This is a great camera for the price. The photo quality is almost comparable to an SLR I own. The photo quality is excellent, but is lacking in some low light atmospheres. The camera offers good features for such a low price. I highly recommend this product.

This is a great basic camera. I wish it had a viewfinder because the screen is hard to read in bright outdoor lights. But the picture quality is great and it is pretty easy to use. I have always loved and trusted the Canon cameras and this one hasn't let me down.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD790 IS Digital Elph Digital Camera:
I have a Nikon 90 but this Canon is so compact I tend to carry it like a cell phone and take a lot of impromptu shots...friends and family. The photos are often of the quality of my Nikon with high priced lenses. It has a very natural human interface. The battery life is excellent. The video feature is great. I have added a 4GB chip so I can take quite long videos and then edit them later. Recommended product.

Great camera for traveling and taking candid pictures in any atmosphere. Has great resolution and is simple to use. The wife hasn't let it leave her purse yet!!!
Thinking about buying another one, since she won't give up the first one. The "face finder" design while taking photos is great no more guessing.

I can't lug around my DSLR all the time and I bought this so I can keep a camera in my pocket. It's very compact and pocketable. It takes great pictures! And the body is very sturdy.

This camera is a little gem. It takes great photos and is really easy to learn. I love the fact that the camera surface is all smooth, with no bumps or dials that stick out. And great LCD size!!!!!

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD790 IS Digital Elph Digital Camera:
This camera is great as a point and shoot. It's got all the regular features one has come to expect from a digital camera, with the advantage of manual setting overides.
The metal body is very robust, and the overall design and shape is great. Perfect size for your pocket, without a protruding lens. The display doesn't scratch easily either.
Main problem is the scroll wheel on the reverse. It's a little fiddly, and not great when you're in a hurry to take a photo. Most function can be accessed without using it, but when you do need it, it's not as easy as using an ipod.

I recently bought my Powershot SD790 and I LOVE it.
Lightning fast power up. Great looking pictures. Video quality is good as well. As many others have said, the scroll wheel does take some getting used to...but by the end of the day I was lovin' it. The battery life continues to impress me...I had a Nikon S210 before and it couldn't take anywhere near as many shots.
I also really like all the shooting modes available the SD790 has. They're tons of fun to play with. Overall it is a wonderful Point-and-shoot camera. I'd readily recommended it to anyone.

I dropped my Powershot SD300 and it couldn't be repaired so I replaced it with this one after doing research on price and user reviews. I'm even happier with it since the image window is bigger.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD790 IS Digital Elph Digital Camera:
This is my first digital camera, I bought it to take a picture of myself every day. It's already received a few physical traumas and is completely unblemished. Image quality is quite good although I am struggling to get used to the high DOF of these tiny digicams.
Shutter lag is a bit unfortunate (even with prefocus) and flash photos are very washed out -- I expect that this is due to the flash being very close to the lens and I don't know why it couldn't have been put farther to the side of the lens.
I haven't had the scroll wheel problems but I get the sense from other reviews that once the bearing loosens up it will become very finicky. I am not looking forward do this. Also, it doesn't outperform cameras that are up to about $40 cheaper, so combined with the flash that's why it's 4 stars.
Bottom line, it's a fun little toy but when I take any important pictures I still use my Canon A-1.

The camera has been used for a lot of indoor pictures with flash. The pictures have come out very nicely. The 3x optical zoom was a concern, but after taking a few dozen pictures, it has not been a problem. Love the 10 megapixels! The face recognition works great, makes the focusing easy. The menu format could be improved, but it's okay. Overall I would recommend this camera, it's a great value for the money and features.

This a fantastic camera. It takes very good photos that rival a Rebel XT in quality (less flexibility, of course). We like the much improved battery life (compared to an older Canon model) and the large, bright LCD display. Image Stabilization (IS) is a plus at this price range. I would highly recommend this camera for the typical camera user.

I got this camera as a replacement for my mom who is close to 70. It is compact enough she can carry it but not so small she can't operate it. The 3" screen was a driving factor. It is bright and clear. As someone who sold many, many different cameras in my time this is a great product for a point & shoot. There could be a little more difference in the buttons, but that’s true of just about ALL electronics now. No matter your age from 7 – 70 this is a great camera at a great price!

I bought my wife the SD750 last year for Christmas - she loved it - always had it on her for that special occasion - we went to the beach this past summer and someone stole it from the table we were sitting at when we got up to dance... Needless to say it killed me to part with the money to by her a new one - I was going to get her the refurbished 750 again for [$] until I realized the 790 was such a better upgrade. It was a great price for such a killer camera... I strongly advise anyone looking for the best bang for the buck to buy it. You should see our pictures from Skiing last weekend - Unbelievable!!!
