The Canon PowerShot SD890 IS Digital Elph Digital Camera provides a 10.0 megapixel resolution and a surprisingly long 5x Optical Zoom lens with Canon's Optical Image Stabilization system that produces excellent image quality, even under low light shooting conditions.
The camera incorporates the exclusive DIGIC III image processor which offers impressive response times and also powers Canon's unique Face Detection and Noise Reduction Technologies, making it easier for users to capture sharp, well-exposed images in any shooting situation.
The 2.5" PureColor LCD display has a tough scratch-resistant and anti-reflective coating featuring Night Display for easy viewing in low light. Even with all of these premium features, and the 5x lens, the PowerShot SD890 IS Digital Elph is still incredibly slim, measuring about 1.1" deep.

Of all the Point and Shoot cameras I reviewed in the 8-13 MP range over a 3 week long photo vacation, this SD890 IS had the best zoom capabilities (manual and digital zoom combined). The closest competitor with this camera was the Sony DSC-300W with 13.6 MP. While the pictures on the Sony's camera screen appeared much better in low light, when printed, several of the photos appeared grainy and a bit blurry even when not at the highest ISO values. I would have to admit that the image stabilization on this Sony camera was vastly overrated and the zoom capabilites was not even close to the Canon. This is just further proof that more megapixels doesn't necessarily mean better, more vivid pictures. In fact, unless you are planning on printing 18x24 inches or larger, the difference in image clarity between 8MP and 12MP cameras will be essentially non existant.
When many of my pictures were reviewed on the Canon, I found the image quality to be very good and I had far fewer issues with blurry photos on this IS version of the camera. In the realm of point and shoot cameras, you can't buy a much better camera than this one. You won't regret buying this camera if you are not looking to carry a DSLR around (or if you own this camera in addition to a DSLR).
I have only one minor complaint about the camera: The camera's on and off button is awkwardly placed on the back of the camera and is a bit hard to push. Canon would have done much better to leave it on the top of the camera where the button was on previous versions.

I dont like the on/off switch. Things I dont like about the switch is the location and amount of pressure needed to turn it on. I dont like how you have to erase a photo. I have the PowerShot SD450 which is easier to use easier to review a shot and easy erase feature. I also do not like the photos taken in low light situations.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD890 IS Digital Elph Digital Camera:
I love my new camera! I am a mom & use this for family/kids photos. I am replacing an older model Canon Elph(SD400). There is a huge improvement in photo quality. I went from a 5mp>10mp. Which I don't need as I don't enlarge prints, but this was the lowest I could find in the current Elph line. It does take up a lot more space on SD card, I had to immediately replace my 1 gb (which had always been more than enough space) w/ 4gb. It will also have larger files on your computer so if you don't enlarge pix you may want to avoid larger mp models. Don't know why they increased, but sd cards are bigger & cheaper now so not a biggee. I am really enjoying a larger zoom on this particular model (from 3 to 5) & am extremely happy with this & do notice a marked difference in zoom. I enjoy a larger lcd screen & still have an optical viewfinder (not sure if I would miss this, but glad to have). The camera buttons & features are so similar to old model it made for a supereasy transition which I love. The only downside is picture delay and it doesn't work well in low light. (At least not using it in the auto modes most of us use, a camera saavy person might know ways around this by adjusting settings...too complicated for us point & snap families though!) My old camera had the same issue, I don't know that this is not a reality for compact point & shoot cameras in general. The improvement in photo quality over my older model is so significant & surprising it is worth repeating-wow! I am really thrilled to see the print quality from this camera & am extremely pleased w/ the product.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD890 IS Digital Elph Digital Camera:
My wife and I wanted to switch from our bulky SLR camera to a point and shoot. After alot of research on what was what in the digital camera world I ended up buying this camera. It arrived the day before my brothers wedding. We charged the battery and used it all day into the night and took over 200 pics with it. It didn't matter the lighting or the setting the camera took great pictures. My only con was some pictures that looked bad on the lcd screen actually turned out great. But those where all the pics down by the river with the sun reflecting off the water. I have no complaints we are happy with the purchase.

Very easy to use and the pictures are incredible, I had an Olympus before this camera that shot O.K. pictures and before that a Canon AE1 Program that shot wonderful pictures ... but the Canon PowerShot SD890 IS is a real treat for a camera and everything about it is easy and well ... GREAT !!!

I like to carry a digital "point and shoot" in my purse and was looking to replace a Casio Exilim which sadly, had gotten crushed. This Canon took great photos but wasn't the right fit for me. It's too wide and bulky for my purse and doesn't fit my hand well. The screen is also smaller than the one on the Casio

-The 5x optical zoom is great
-lots of powerful features
-easy to use
-the spin dial on back gets poor reviews, but I find it works out just fine
- when wearing polarized sunglasses and looking at the screen when rotated vertically it goes black.. any annoyance
-reload time between pictures is a bit slow
-this is my 4th digital elph, and the best yet!

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD890 IS Digital Elph Digital Camera:
I use my camera for everything from candids to formal shots. At first I was hesitant as the body of it is a little larger than my previous camera. That took some adjusting to. I chose this one because of it zoom capabalities and mega pixels were higher and had more potential than the other marketed camera.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD890 IS Digital Elph Digital Camera:
I'm using this camera as a point-and-shoot for daily use and snapshots (I use SLRs and film to photograph my artwork). It was a replacement for an older Canon A80 I had that recently bit the dust. It takes great pictures, it's compact, and I found the controls easy to use. The colors and white balance are very good as well, and the 5x zoom is also a plus. There are a lot of preset options (there are even presets for fireworks and aquariums), which can be either helpful or annoying, depending on your perspective. My only two problems are that there is no way to manually adjust the aperture or the focus; and I find the scroll wheel control to be a bit clumsy to use.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD890 IS Digital Elph Digital Camera:
Powershots are wonderful. The 5x zoom on the SD890 IS is worth the extra money. My problem is with the curved right hand side. I was taking a photo of the foam in a hot drink in front of me when it slipped and the lens went into the mug. Yikes! After working to dry everything I could, it now has permanent spots inside the lens. I've taken tens of thousands of photos and have never had this happen before. When one is taking a photo and adjusting buttons, a squared corner allows for a surer grip. If you purchase this camera, I suggest gluing a thin rubber finger grip on that front side.

I had a Canon SD800. I was looking to replace it with a similar camera. I was very familiar with the settings on my previous camera and did not want to relearn. The Canon SD890 meets all my expectations and then some! The picture quality is fantastic along with the ease of operation.
Thus far I have no cons for this camera.

I had another powershot camera and it got hit by a wave of water by a dolphin at Seaworld and shorted out the camera for good. I tried a different camera and hated it so I went back to the Canon Powershot and I am happy again. The only thing I don't like is the red eye. Sometimes it can't be corrected on the computer. That is the only complaint I have. I catches the shot you are going for. It takes great action shots. I'd buy it again.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD890 IS Digital Elph Digital Camera:
I bought this for my daughter and occasionally "steal" it for things since I'm an SLR user and sometimes don't want the big camera with me. This camera has great features that are easy to use. My 13 year old has been able to learn to use it including some advanced settings on her own. She loves the programmable self timer.
The downside is that it's very narrow and tends to sit leaning a bit forward, so I highly suggest a small tripod for this.
Love this camera. Would buy one for me as a second camera in a heartbeat.
