Finally a color profiling tool with all of the features I need at a price I can afford.
I had used the Eye-1 profiler before to create paper profiles for my printer while owning the Spyder 2 for my monitor. But I never could quite justify the price of the entire kit for monitors, projectors and printer profiling.
But then along came the Color Munki.
It took a couple of tries before I grasped the differences in profiling with the Munki as opposed to the Spyder. With the Spyder you would balance the white point with the monitor controls. The Color Munki does this for you. You need to reset the monitor to the defaults. Then spend the time to achieve the green checks indicating that you have set the brightness and contrast properly.
As of today we have profiled the monitors on both computers as well as seven different fine art papers for two different printers.
Profiling for printing is easy. I really like the idea that the software bases the second chart on the results from the first chart. Then to make it even better, you can go back and tweak the profile for specific images by creating a custom color chart from the image you want to print. Conceptually this is a great idea.
Picking up colors from real world objects is so simple. Likewise you can create a custom pallet from an image.
All of the operations are performed within the same application. The interface is very intuitive. As yet I haven't needed to use the included video instructions.
We haven't tried the projector profiling yet, but soon.
The only two criticisms I have are:
1. They could explain how to set up the monitor for profiling a little better. It will profile the monitor at the brightness and contrast settings you have without requiring you to achieve a green check mark in the software. This resulted in my monitor being a lot brighter than my print. Once I darkened the monitor and spent the time to set it correctly my prints are much closer in brightness to my monitor.
2. The USB cable has a tendency to pull out of the device too easily. This usually happened just as I was starting to calibrate my monitor. Each time I would have to recalibrate the Color Munki. They could make a little clip to make this more secure. But a piece of tape works just as well.
Overall I highly recommend this for anyone that wants great looking prints. If you spend the money for a good printer, then the money for paper and ink, it is foolish not to spend the few dollars more the Color Munki costs.

Before I say much about the product let me first disclose that I am a newbie to color managment. While I have a lot of computer experience, I've never exlored this area before. I can't compare the ColorMunki to other systems. Perhaps it is really the best product available or at least the best value for the money. I don't know. I can only try to describe my concerns and let you make up your own mind. If you want to know all the great things about it, there are other reviews on the Net that will give you that information. Here goes.
The ColorMunki is a new product that allows one to calibrate monitors, printers, and projection devices.
My first opinion was that the documentation seemed to be a bit on the terse side. The printed "manual" contains about 18 paragraphs of instructions (many of them single sentences) in english. Even with the computer based help files, instructions are very limited and, to a newbie, confusing. There is room for a LOT of improvement here.
Next I discovered that the CD does NOT contain the program!!! You have to download the 286Mb file. If you don't have high speed Internet I wouldn't recommend buying this product!
Another issue not disclosed up front is that the software can only be activated three times. If you install it and activate it once, then buy a new computer and activate it again, and then have a hard drive failure and have to activate it a third time, I guess you'll be out of luck if a virus crashes your hard drive. I often update my hardware and find myself re-installing Windows at least once a year. I forsee problems ahead. If you thought you were going to use the device on more than one computer, you may have to re-think.
I don't ever like to buy copy-protected software and this is seems like a particularly heavy-handed restriction on the part of the company. It may be that all similar products are so encumbered but if so it's time for the users to complain loudly!
I got past all that and calibrated the two monitors on my computer. I then got to do it again when a friend suggested I should have reset the monitors to their default settings before doing the calibration runs. Oh well, practice is good. I had three minor problems during the process.
1) You have to position the ColorMunki over the top of the monitor so it hangs in front of a certain spot on the screen, identified by the software. A case and weighted strap are provided for the purpose but the strap is just not quite heavy enough and not adjustable enough to make it easy.
2) the mini-USB connector is just too flimsy to make a reliable connection to the ColorMunki. If it comes loose you have to start over with a self-calibration of the Munki.
3) Changing settings on the ColorMunki (like from calibrate monitor to Self-calibration and back) involves twisting the round center to point to a different location. This twisting isn't exactly difficult but there is a trick to it and it's hard to twist while not pulling the connector out and without bashing your LCD screen. A little flap sticking out from the side that one could grasp to turn would have been nice.
I did get my monitors calibrated and I do believe it did a good job of it (though see disclamer at the start.)
Next I wanted to try the printer calibration system. I had some HP Premium Plus Photo semi-gloss paper from my former HP printer and wanted to use it on my Epson R2400. I managed to get through the process with a minimal amount of frustration. Sliding the ColorMunki along the strips of color sometimes works and sometimes fails. I haven't yet figured out if I'm starting too far or too close to the leading edge? Am I going too far or not far enough off the far edge? Am I going too fast or too slow? Am I going straight enough? Do I need to wait longer after pressing the button to start the scan or am I waiting too long? I'm sure practice and experience will tell. Still, I was able to get the job done and it worked. The printer produced noticably better prints than before the calibration.
Later I decided to try to refine the calibration by using colors from an actual photo I wanted to print. I was able to sample the colors easily with the ColorMunki and I got the sample strips printed. When I tried to scan them I got some kind of error and the system crashed. I haven't had the nerve to try again yet.
If you just want to calibrate your monitor, there are less expensive alternatives. I thought the combination of monitor and printer calibration was a pretty good value for the price and perhaps it is. I do think the company has a lot of room yet for improvement or perhaps thats just the current state of the art. I don't know. Despite my criticisms, I am using it and it is working. I hope I've been objective enough so more experienced users can form their own opinions. Caveat Emptor.

Bang for the buck. Very easy to use, quick to set up, excellent interface that professionals and consumers will appreciate.
Technologically it is a spectrophotometer. The others in this price range (or anywhere near it) are colorimeters. So it should yield superior results.
The resulting monitor/printer profiling was spot on for our iMAC 27." The MACPRO with it's 30" Cinema Display was/is difficult to dial in.
The Canon Pixma Pro9000 Mark II loves the profiles created with this device.
Calibration frequency depends on how many systems or monitors you use, each paper type requires a new calibration to get the absolute most out your print, if your shooting setup changes a lot this will also require frequent calibration. And indeed weekly or monthly monitor calibration is a good idea in any case. The Colormunki makes it a painless process.
Calibration of your devices is not a one-time deal. It is an ongoing process and I recommend the Colormunki Photo as the best deal around.

I bought this to calibrate my Eizo and printer after upgrading my computer. The product works beautifully once installed. Absolutely no problems profiling either the monitor or printer. HOWEVER, installation was far from easy. After several hours on the web searching the FAQs and support pages, I finally found answers to why the machine wasn't recognizing the device. I sent an e-mail to Xrite, however after two days of waiting without a response, I went searching again and found the solution on a support page for a color management equipment reseller. Once corrected, all works great.

Comments about X-Rite ColorMunki Photo Color Management Solution:
I calibrate my monitors and printers for an accurate and consistent workflow. I have used other calibration tools and have found that the ColorMunki Photo is, by far, the easiest to use and give me excellent results. It is as close to WYSIWYG as you can get without spending many time more. The thing I like the most is how fast it is. I always resisted creating a printer profile because of the time it took. With the ColorMunki Photo it takes less that 1/4 of the time. Another thing is the color accuracy I now get. My other system was close, but I often found that the paper manufacturer's profiles were a bit better than the ones I tried to create. The ColorMunki Photo give me the best color profiles now. I also like having a single device rather than two. It is much more convenient to use. The monitor calibration is easier too, because the ColorMunki Photo software automatically adjusts the monitor settings for you rather than having to make complicated manual adjustments. I would consider myself to be an advanced amateur and would recommend the ColorMunki Photo to beginners and pros alike. I am very happy!

I use this to create color profiles for my monitors and printer. The selection dial is a little catchy at times but I can live with it. The weighted monitor bag hanging system could be improved upon as my Wacom Cintiq 21 graph tablet is bigger than my normal monitor so the Color Munki may not align up with the software target area as easily all the time. Going in and out of the bag to measure ambient light and then the monitors for color profiling is a little inconvenient to me. For the most part a very good device other than the bag system to me.
Thank you.

Works exactly as advertised. Used as a replacement for a Spyder2pro for my Macbook LED screen and I am enjoying the added benefit of the printer color management. The value for the dollar can't be beat with this though I'm sure it isn't as versatile as their i1 line but it can be had for a fraction of the price.

I am a student photographer and was hesitant in buying this product because of the high price. I am so happy that I did though because not only can you calibrate your monitor but also your printer for the best possible images. Plus, since you should calibrate the monitor regularly, over time the product will pretty much pay for itself. The instructions are fairly easy to understand and the product does a great job of doing what it says.

Before using ColorMunki Photo, the colors and brightness of my shots would appear "off" on other, properly calibrated computers I use. I installed the software, plugged in the calibration unit, followed the super easy on-screen instructions, and within a few short minutes my monitor was perfectly calibrated! It even shows you an example of how a photo appears on your monitor before and after calibration. SUPER EASY to use and an absolute must have for any serious photographer or photo editor!!!

Comments about X-Rite ColorMunki Photo Color Management Solution:
I've invested a lot of time to learn about photography. It's become my new passion. The more I researched the subject, and discovered how important color management is. ColorMunki is the product that ensures the true representation of what your pictures show. I read many complains on many photo printing sites "screwing up" from many people. They complain about lab, but refuse to understand/acknowledge what EVERYBODY says... it is photographer's responsibility do the basics: calibrating their own equipment (monitors,priters...).ColorMunki will help them with this. I know I may sound like a commercial for the X-rite, but this is just a fact.
I like the product. It is a little intimidating at first (the quick start pamphlet could be better), but included training videos explain the process, and the step-by-step wizards do an excellent job in guiding the user through the process.
I use it in Windows 7 64-bit, and have not experienced any problems so far.
Ohh, The current $75 rebate did help to push me into the purchase too.
