The Tamron AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro Lens made for the Nikon SLR system incorporates a motor built into the lens itself, which gives it the capability to autofocus with all Nikon DSLR cameras (including the D40 and D40x). In addition, with the motor built into the lens, focusing will be quieter and more responsive.

The 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II is a high power zoom lens designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras using the more compact (APS-C) digital size image sensors. The focal length of this lens is equivalent to approx. 28-300mm in 35mm format.

Designed as an "all-in-one" lens, it will meet almost all photographic opportunities without changing lenses.

The 18-200mm zoom lens realizes an MFD (Minimum Focus Distance) of 1.5' (45 cm) over the entire zoom range by the employment of a new optical/mechanical design configuration. Since the maximum magnification ratio at f=200mm is 1:3.7, you can enjoy close-up photography easily and conveniently.

Note! Di-II lenses cannot be used with digital SLR cameras using image sensors that are larger than that of an APS-C size imager, or with 35mm film SLR cameras.

Special Glass Optimized for Digital SLR
XR (Extra Refractive Index) glass design reduces various aberrations to the absolute minimum and achieves remarkable downsizing at the same time. In addition, three hybrid aspherical lens elements and two LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements are used to accomplish effective compensation of on-axis and lateral chromatic aberrations, a critical factor to enhance the optical quality in digital photography.
Internal Surface Coating to Reduce Ghosting and Flare
Lens features Internal Surface Coatings (i.e., multiple-layer coatings on cemented surfaces of plural elements) and new multiple-layer coating technology on ordinary elements in order to minimize reflections that occur when light enters through the front element and to reduce image degrading effects caused by the imagers themselves.
Zoom Lock Mechanism
The Zoom Lock prevents unwanted barrel movement when carrying the lens/camera combination.
Di-II Series Design
Design has been improved by adding a gold-colored band between the focus and zoom rings to enhance the appearance and make it stand out as a Di-II lens. The rubber patterns of the zoom and focus control rings have been improved at the same time to compliment the digital camera design style and to provide better handling.

I got this lens when Tamron was having a $70 rebate - for $200, I really don't think you can do any better! I'm using the lens mainly as an outdoor walkaround lens to eliminate the need to switch around, and this lens performs remarkably well. Distortion is decently controlled and at F8 it's really sharp. To top it off, the lens is very compact & light making it a perfect travel lens.

Now the cons. It is NOT a good indoor lens. It WILL hunt for focus indoor. And you need to crank the f-stop to F/8 to get sharp images, although wide open is acceptable. On my D80 it also wildly underexpose - no biggie though, I just set the exposure +1.7 and problem solved.

Now if you look at this lens you probably have also considered the Nikkor. I recently shoot an outdoor event and I switched to the Nikkor 18-200VR in the middle of the event and I could hardly tell the difference between the two as far as IQ. The skin tones do look a little different, however, but not enough to justify the $450 price difference.

So if you intend to use this lens for what it is - an all around, outdoor walkaround, cheap lens that delivers sharp images at a bargain price, then get this lens! However, for indoor low light purposes, look elsewhere.

I returned this lens and bought the Nikon. If you want to save about $400 bucks, go ahead and buy this. But if you want fast, quiet, smooth and effective, accurate focus, dont bother. Spring the extra for the Nikon as it is worth every penny. I will say however that this lens is BY FAR SIGNIFICANTLY lighter than the Nikon, which is really heavy for a zoom of this size. It's not a bad alternative for those who cannot afford the price of the Nikon. I doubt very highly that anyone would notice from your pics or prints....you just may have to take more pics to weed out the blury ones.

Comments about Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II Macro Lens for Nikon Digital SLR:

Great lens for street shooting. The AF can be a bit loud at times, but when I'm out and about the convenience of not having to switch lenses makes it worth it. Other reviews mention it's not as crisp as other lenses - It's not fantastic in low-light, but otherwise I can't tell the difference.

Comments about Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II Macro Lens for Nikon Digital SLR:

I am an ameteur photographer, and I bought this lens to have something that covered the 18mm to 200mm range, without having to constantly change lenses. First of all, I shoot a Nikon D3000, and this lens works perfectly with my camera. For the price, this lens cannot be beat. I've already taken several hundred pictures, and put this lens through the paces. I've taken shots in the morning, blazing bright day, evening, and astrophotos at night. Through it all, this lens has proven consistent.

I did a lot of research on this lens before buying it. The three biggest things I saw negatively against it was the focus, image stablization, and barrel drift. Well, either my lens is speacial or those are not factors at all.

The focus is quick and crisp. I can go from macro focusing to long distance focusing in a snap, and the lens doesn't "hunt" for a proper focus. Even focusing on the bright star Sirius proved no problem for the lens...it gave a quick and pin-point focus, without the hunting problems of my Sigma (and sometimes my Nikon) lens. Also to note, the focus is very quiet...a lot quieter than my Sigma lens and quite possibly quieter than my Nikon lens.

Another issue I saw in my research was the image stablization. I do not by any means have the world's steadiest hands. That's why I can't draw! However, from the 18mm to the 100mm range I have not found IS to be any problem what so ever. I have always had a general rule of thumb that when I go above 100mm I always put it on a tripod. No questions asked. So, obviously above 100mm sitting on my heavy duty tripod there was absolutely no problem with the IS. To test the 18 - 100 range, I photographed all sorts of things like jewelry, my out of control children and much more...again, no IS issues to note what so ever.

The last issue was barrel drift. I conducted a total of 4 runs, two in manual focus and two in auto focus. In each run, I took a bunch of photos at each of the focal length positions. On the first two run throughs, I had the camera pointed 90 degrees down. On the second two run throughs I had the camera pointed 90 degrees up. Not once did I get any drift from the barrel.

As far as quality of images, I have not found anything wrong with the quality. It seems consistent from the very center all the way to the edges. Colors are very good and sharpness is very good. Again, I'm not a pro so I may miss small quality issues that a pro would see. However, I've gotten compliments on my photos and I have yet to see any issues with the quality.

In summary, if you want a quality lens for a low price this is the lens you want. If you want an all purpose landscape to portrait and more lens for a great price this is the only lens you want.

I am not a pro but I certainly do have a good eye for great photos. I find Tamron 18-200mm lens the most versatile lens out there for amateur photographers like me who mostly take pictures of family events and children's school activities. I don't need to switch lenses anymore to capture that precious moment of your family whether indoor or outdoor. Using only one lens for close and middle range photography means less equipment to carry which means a lot when you have young children. The only minor disadvantage that I have encoutered is that it feels "gritty" when you zoom in. Or may be I am just used to the smooth feel of my old small lens. Overall, I highly recommend this product to those who want to capture that precious moment of your little ones.

I haven't had any issues with this lens. I had used a Canon 18-200 on my friends camera and it creeps way more than the Tamron does on my Nikon. Plus the lock feature is on the top of the lens which I found to be more convenient than the Canon's placement on the bottom. I can lock/unlock with just a quick movement of my trigger finger. Love it so far!

This is a great lens. I was able to eliminate my 18-55 and my 55-200 Nikon lenses with this one lens. I used the lens on a recent outing and it was a charm. I was able to get the wildlife and scenic shots without changing lens'. I did not have any problems with focusing. I was able to shoot in just about any light situation. One of te best things I liked was the price.

I am a retired portrait/wedding photographer. I am a zoo volunteer and love to photograph the animals in our collection. I also travel a lot and needed not only a wide angle lens but a medium telephoto. This lens fills the bill. Some reviews I have read seemed to think these lenses weren't very sharp but I find that to be untrue. I can see details clearly in the feathers of ducks twenty to thirty feet away. Also clearly see the whiskers on other farm animals in the barn yard. Auto focus is plenty fast enough for my shooting style.

I enjoy nature photography and was looking for a versatile lens that I could use in impromptu situations. This lens works great. I have no problems carrying it at 18mm, without slippage. Focus is fast and with backbutton focusing, holds the focus well.

Comments about Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II Macro Lens for Nikon Digital SLR:

So far, I am quite pleased with my lens purchase. Quite economical while fulfilling all of my needs, which include scenic photography (sunsets over Long Island Sound), "sports" photography (my grandson's soccer games) as well as general landscape and wildlife photography. The lens is quite compact and light for such a wide range of focus lengths. The focus motor works smoothly and the automatic focus works beautifully in the various situations in which I've used the lens. I look forward to greater use as time moves forward!
The only drawback that has even crossed my mind is the feeling that the lens isn't durable based upon how light it is. Perhaps I'm just used to the bulky and heavy lenses of "yesteryear".... Lightweight is a good thing!

Where do I begin. Let's start with the negative that everyone else had to say. As far as it being heavy, it's a 18-200mm lens and has a metal connection to the camera, would you expect any less. Weight I believe is a sign of durability. You know like your father's 1964 Caddy that still runs 60 years later. As far as slow focus, where? I literally can not even begin to count to one before it is focused. So the sharpness is not so great, is that what was said? I don't see it.

Compare compare compare. If you have a 18-55mm and a 55-200mm lens and want a 18-200mm lens then compare them when you purchase this lens. That's why you have a DSLR camera. I literally tested all three lenses by hand held and on a tripod. I tested different apertures, shutter speeds, iso, and so on. Then compared them on a computer screen at 100% and there were not too many differences.

I will say this, as far as hand held at 160-200mm get a tripod. If you have even the slightest shake it will do damage to the picture. However the macro shots I got hand held (can't even imagine how beautiful they would be on a tripod) were amazing and that is what sold me on this lens.

Oh yeah and as far as lens creep, sure if you violently shake your camera, the lens will slip out, or extend, whatever. Not a big deal for me.

My greatest fear with this lens was lens creep, but to my surprise there is hardly any. My standard Nikkor lens (18-55mm) has much worse creep. I bought this lens to be my one lens quiver, mostly for shooting my kids and family events, and it has proven to be great for that so far.

I use the lens for almost all my photography because of the convenience of not having to carry several different lenses. The only disadvantage so far is that it's not fast enough to clearly capture active children at a distance.
