This Tamron is a great lens for the money. This latest version of the lens has a built in motor which greatly improves autofocus operation. I have tested this lens indoors in low light (shooting at ISO 800 at 1/30 of a sec or slower) and in my tests it focused nearly as quickly as my 35mm f/2 Nikkor, using my D200's built-in autofocus assist lamp. Also, I found the noise generated by autofocus operation to be comparable to the autofocus noise generated by my 35mm nikon, perhaps a tad louder. Still, it is by no means overly loud when compared to other non silent wave motor lenses.
This lens has very good color rendition, and is very sharp. It has a full-frame equivalent of 25mm on the wide end of the zoom range, making it a great way to make wide angle photographs on an APS-C sensor camera such as the D300, without breaking the bank.
In terms of construction, the lens is mostly plastic, but it is not cheap, bottom-of-the-barrel kit lens plastic: the lens has weight to it, and feels very durable and well constructed. Another feature I found quite useful is the zoom lock on the lens, which prevents lens creep when the lens is fully extended.
The only real negative I've found with this lens so far is a noticeable amount of chromatic aberration, in the form of cyan or red "halos" along the edges of high contrast areas, such as the edge of a white building against a blue sky. This is not a huge problem with software like Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop, and very easy to fix in Adobe Lightroom with basically one move of a slider, more or less eliminating the problem from my images entirely.
Overall, I am very pleased with this lens: it is affordable, well made, very sharp, and a solid performer for the money. The comparable Nikon is three times the price for a not-so-huge jump in quality, and therefore I find this lens to be a great purchase and a terrific value.

I tried 3 copies of this lens with my D90. Unfortunately they all had front focus issues. The best of the 3 copies produced excellent results with smaller apertures (F/5.6 and beyond), but at F/2.8 at all focal lengths not only were the images front focused, but even with manual focus they were very soft. I'm sure I could of sent it to Tamron and have it calibrated, I just did not want to go through the hassle and wait.
There are many good results with this lens, just not for me and my D90. Went with the Nikkor 16-85 and although it is much slower, it focuses properly straight out of the box.

Comments about Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II LD Aspherical [IF] Autofocus Lens:
Out of the box all the features were right where you would expect them to be without a learning curve. The lens was quick focusing. The bokeh was equal to my other more expensive lenses. I could easily manage the depth of field. The lens is now on my camera all the time.

Comments about Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II LD Aspherical [IF] Autofocus Lens:
I use this lens with a Nikon D90. While the 18-105 is a pretty good lens, I wanted a faster lens and the Tamron fits the bill. I had read a several reviews about front or back focus issues with tamrons, so I was a little hesitant. In fact as soon as I received the lens I did several tests and the lens focus was spot on. I used the lens over the Christmas holidays and it performed flawlessly. It isn't a huge step above the 18-105, but seems to produce a somewhat sharper image, especially when stopped down. I like the fact that with less light available, I do not have to reach for the flash as soon as I would with the 18-105. I enjoy using it and it will probably remain on my D90 most of the time.

I've been using this lens to shoot basketball games. It is a nice lens for low light gyms and the 17mm wide angle is good to get photos under the basket. I haven't had any problems with this lens yet but time will tell.

Comments about Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II LD Aspherical [IF] Autofocus Lens:
Its kind of hard to give right amount of star to this lens. I have a D90 Nikon camera, taking pics of nature, landscape , portrait and weddings. I wanted a better mid-range lens then the lenses that I am already have(50mm/f1.8 and the kit lens 18-55/f3.5)
I did lots of research and testing on this lens and I found out that this lens is not calibrated very well with Nikon cameras. 5 out of 30 pics were blurry/out of focus/overexposed. This was the case when I was taking pictures of moving objects without tripod.
The lens is far better than my kit lens and gives same quality pics like my 50mm/f1.8 Nikon lens. Unfortunately this lens fails the test when you are taking pics of moving objects (kids, animal, sport.etc)its slow or sometimes even not able to auto-focus. The 2nd issue is that pics are soft on F2.8.
It is important what is your main purpose of photography. I am a family guy who likes to take lots of family pics and that's why this issue was very important to me. If you are interested in nature, landscape , portrait and weddings photography I would absolutely recommend trying this lens first(2nd place)for the price before buying the king Nikon 17-55/2.8!
Nikon 17-55/2.8 is too expensive lens. I was hoping to keep Tamron to save same cash, but it didn't work. Now I am going to buy Nikon, the only best mid-range zoom lens in the market! Hope this review helps, Good luck!

First lens was not too sharp even after I stopped down and set it up on the tripod. A quick exchange with B&H and my second copy of the lens is great. Focus is a tad noisy but not bad. For the price this lens is great.

Nice imaging and weight. And price. Hard to attached -- would be great if it had a white dot to line up on the NIKON d90. A bit slow sometimes to focus.

Comments about Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II LD Aspherical [IF] Autofocus Lens:
Let's start with the good… It is small, light, has a constant 2.8 across the zoom range and is very sharp stopped down.
The bad: my copy is very, very soft wide open, it's good by 4.5 and excellent at 5.6. By why bother with a 2.8 if it's virtually useless until about 4.5? I'd take more noise (via higher ISO) rather than blurry images any day. AF is noisy (as expected) and virtually useless in AF-C (not expected) with fast moving objects. AF-S performance is OK (for static objects obviously) in good light but it hunts to no end in poor light. Again, a 2.8 is supposed to help with low light AF but not here. Every Nikon 5.6 AF-S I've used performed much, much better. Finally, flash exposure (especially bounce) is very hit or miss which has been my experience with Tamron's in general.
The ugly: This lens is NOT compatible with live view AF on newer Nikons like D7000 and D5100. It will not autofocus in LV at all.

Comments about Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II LD Aspherical [IF] Autofocus Lens:
I got this lens for two reasons. In low-light, indoors conditions, I don't like to use flash, so I was looking for something that would be able to handle that scenario (and a lens kits at F/3.5 tops just doesn't cut it). The lens is excellent at this task. My other use is sky portraits. This lens works so well that I can dial the ISO all the way down to 200 and still get plenty of detail in my shots (if exposure is long enough and shot is tracked to avoid star trails). Mission accomplished!

I have been looking at this lens for a long time, and finally decided to pull the trigger. The first copy came from a different seller, and it had significant amounts of visible dust inside, as well as a possible scratch behind the front element. Returned it and got the second one from B&H, and this one was flawless. So far it has given me excellent performance, with great sharpness and color accuracy. Makes for a great walk-around lens on my D90, as well as a reasonably high quality wide angle solution. It is light and nice ergonomically, excellent optically. Does not feel like the most durable and solid piece of equipment, but I was not expecting that.

Purchased for landscape photograpy, this fast lens is great for low light situations. focal length range extremely useful. Focuses quickly and accurately. Well made, solidly built. I rarely use lenses other than Nikon for my 35mm work. When I do, I always choose Tamron.
