The Panasonic DMW-LND46 46mm Neutral Density (ND8) Filter has several uses and offers the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results.

ND filters appear grey and reduce the amount of light reaching the sensor. Often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrasty landscapes. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky while exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and under-exposed. This filter enables cloud detail to be kept correctly exposed in the picture. It has no effect on the color balance.

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with higher light sensitivities (high ISO), to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective light sensitivity (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure

Great filter. Works exactly as described, and as good as a BW without the cost. Great on my lens used with pany and oly m4/3.

Comments about Panasonic DMW-LND46 46mm Neutral Density (0.9) Glass Filter:

Fitted on the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 micro four thirds lens, this ND filter reduces the light so that photos can be taken wide-open (f/1.7) even in the brightest direct sunlight giving that wonderful shallow depth of field characteristic of artistic shots -- such as a portrait with the face in clear focus and the background pleasantly blurred.

Comments about Panasonic DMW-LND46 46mm Neutral Density (0.9) Glass Filter:

Good and solid construction. Quality workmanship. I use it mainly for long exposure water/sky scenes although I would prefer higher f-stops filter so I can start shooting on the broad daylight.

It is good thing to have if you are going to shoot video in a bright daylight, although I wish I would have thought of step-down rings before buying it. After this one I bought a Fader ND for the larger diameter lens and now I use Fader ND 52mm on 46mm lens. Fader ND is better since you can change value depending on light.
