The SpaceNavigator SE 3D Mouse from 3Dconnexion is a mouse designed to facilitate work with 3D software applications. Unlike a conventional mouse, which is limited to movement on two flat planes, this unit supports effortless motion in all directions. Simply push, pull, tilt, or twist the controller cap to simultaneously pan, zoom, and rotate 3D imagery on X, Y, and Z axes. This is the standard edition (SE) of the SpaceNavigator mouse and includes an unlimited use license appropriate for commercial purposes, as well as full phone, e-mail, and online support.
Increasing or decreasing pressure with the controller determines the speed with which the mouse responds. Its small footprint is well suited for studio or mobile work. It is compatible with most standard 3D applications and automatically recognizes such programs already loaded on your computer, including but not limited to Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire, Solid Edge, UGS NX, and a host of other CAD and DCC applications.
This model includes (2) programmable function keys. When applications are pre-installed on your computer, the mouse will revert to default function configurations associated with each program. It is compatible with the following operating systems: Windows (2000, XP, Vista), UNIX/Linux, and Mac OS X (10.4.6 and later).

I've used products similar to the SpaceNavigator for over a decade (Magellan, Spaceball, similar devices). This devices takes up far less desk space, is easier to use, uses USB instead of a serial connection, and is FAR less expensive than previous generation devices.
I especially like the size and weight of the SpaceNavigator combined with its sensitivity. It is very easy to use and doesn't wear out your hand like the older (stiffer) devices did. Several colleagues of mine that didn't like the older devices really like these. In particular, people with small hands like these a lot better than other devices they've tried.
I beyond the comfort and desk space savings, I like that I can easily pack the SpaceNavigator in a bag and take it with me if I want to. They make a laptop-specific version that's even more compact, but I haven't felt the need to get one specifically for the laptop yet. The control "cap" is just the right size for my hand, not too big, not too small, so for my usage, I will probably just continue to drag the standard model around with me when I go places.

This device does exactly what it is suppossed to do. It navigates google earth with ease, and it allows you to add to an existing mouse the added functionality to relieve wrist or tendon problems that result from long term mouse controller use. I do wish it had more plug an play to work with older and newer 3D games such as homeworld or flight simulation programs. All in all it has a future to grow, and the company does release SDK development software. If you no how to decipher the Hieroglyphics, you can program the navigator to be used in other applications. Im not sure how true this is or whether it is all smoke and mirrors. Ill give the benefit of the doubt. C+ to Grow in my Book.

Comments about 3Dconnexion SpaceNavigator SE 3D Mouse:
This is the best tool you can have when working with Autodesk Inventor. It makes tough jobs easy. All movements of the CAD objects on the screen are very smooth. Move, zoom, and rotate all at the same time. You can not do all those moves at the same time with a mouse and keyboard. It will increase your productivity by 20 percent on the first day.

THIS DEVICE WORKS VERY NICE WITH SOLIDWORKS. WHEN DRAWING LARGE ASSEMBLIES, IT IS THE BEST. CAN PAN AND ROTATE WHILE DRAWING WITH OPPOSITE HAND. REALLY HELPS WITH MATES.SEEING MY MODELS LIKE I HAVE NEVER DID IN THE PAST. WORKS GOOD WITH GOOGLE EARTH.
SHOULD BE STANDARD EQUIPMENT WHEN USE SOLIDWORKS.

Comments about 3Dconnexion SpaceNavigator SE 3D Mouse:
This tool is used in conjunction with the mouse to manipulate objects in 3D. I am using it with Altium Designer and TurboCAD Pro. Greatly simplifies moving around in and visualizing the model. The unit is heavy enough that it does not move unless you physically pick it up.

I use the spacenavigator with Autodesk Inventor on a daily basis. It works great for that. I haven't tried it anywhere else. The only catch I have found with it, is that everytime I shut down my computer and turn it back on, I must unplug the Spacenavigator and plug it back in for it to work.

Comments about 3Dconnexion SpaceNavigator SE 3D Mouse:
Installed quickly and correctly right out of the box.
I am using it to record Machinima in Second Life.
Although there are suggestions for making adjustments to the mouse, so far I am satisfied with the default settings, and after only a few hours use, I find it easy to fly the camera in Second Life.
If you didn't know, the Navigator does not replace the conventional mouse. The default controls (used in Second Life), attach camera control to the Navigator, the arrow keys control avatar movement, and the regular mouse is used to select objects. There is detailed help for this in the game.
Supposedly the Navigator can be used to move and rotate selected objects. I have not figured out how to do that yet.
This is installed on a Windows 7 64 bit machine.

Very useful for CAD software users, keeps wrist in a more natural position when compared with a mouse.
It is like holding your virtual CAD data or parts in your hand.
Fun to use with google earth.
I wish i could use it with more everyday software.

Comments about 3Dconnexion SpaceNavigator SE 3D Mouse:
I use this mouse in Cinema 4D and love it. I have found that it has saved me a lot of time to be able to maneuver using the mouse rather than the standard orbit tools. The customizable buttons also help to make me be even more efficient. The only problems I have had with it so far was when I was trying to customize it for C4D, it seemed to take several restarts before it actually took the preferences I wanted.

Comments about 3Dconnexion SpaceNavigator SE 3D Mouse:
A 3D mouse saves me SO much time while I'm CADing, especially in Pro/E or Solidworks b/c the normal pan/zoom controls are awkward.
The product overall feels very solid, no complainants so far. However, I only rated it 4 stars because I do feel that Logitech is charging massive premium for a basic 3D mouse and exorbitant prices on their "pro" mouses.
I have not regretted keeping an extra $100-$200 in my pocket for less on mouse buttons. Simply because I pretty much use it only for moving around my CAD models.

I purchased it to use at my work place but got in connected to my home computer. I like it. (as long as the software that I'm using it with is supported for it.) anything older that 2007 is going to be a pain. And I'm using it on my secondary computer with older programs

Once you get used to the 3d mouse you will never know how you did with out it.
It is somewhat frustrating to setup due to a lack of product data, but be patient all you need to know is available within the help menu.
This is a small price to pay for the time saved in useing the Space Navigator 3-d mouse.
