The SpaceExplorer 3D Mouse from 3Dconnexion is a mouse designed to facilitate work with 3D software applications. Unlike a conventional mouse, which is limited to movement on two flat planes, this unit supports effortless motion in all directions. Simply push, pull, tilt, or twist the controller cap to simultaneously pan, zoom, and rotate 3D imagery on X, Y, and Z axes. This model also includes a contoured ergonomic base with a wrist guard.
Increasing or decreasing pressure with the controller determines the speed with which the mouse responds. Its small footprint is well suited for studio or mobile work and an included leather case helps protect the mouse during transport or storage.
It is compatible with most standard 3D applications and automatically recognizes such programs already loaded on your computer, including but not limited to Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire, Solid Edge, UGS NX, and a host of other CAD and DCC applications.
This model includes (15) programmable function keys. When applications are pre-installed on your computer, the mouse will revert to default function configurations associated with each program. It is compatible with the following operating systems: Windows (2000, XP, Vista), UNIX/Linux, and Mac OS X (10.4.6 and later).

Comments about 3Dconnexion SpaceExplorer 3D Mouse:
This is a must have for CAD, and is the best 3D controller available for CAD on the Mac. (The SpacePilot Pro is windows only.) Wrist rest is very comfortable, and helps keep the base firmly planted. Would be 5 stars if the base was heavier. Windows only users should consider the more expensive SpacePilot Pro for the heavier base alone, but this is a great product.

Comments about 3Dconnexion SpaceExplorer 3D Mouse:
I bought the SpaceExplorer for the extra buttons and functionality. It is a huge time saver once you get used to using it. I use it for Inventor and the added buttons save a lot of time over the course of a day being right at your finger tips and not having to move your hand across a keyboard for commands that you use frequently. I won't do 3D without it again. The only con that I can come up with is the big price jump over the SpaceNavigator for the additonal buttons and an eronomic "plastic" base. I gave 4 stars only for the price.

Sad to say: The product does not work as understood from the manufacturer's advertising. I expected most if not all buttons to work on my macpro computer. It took me a day or two past your two day "satisfaction guarantee". Boy was i a sucker for those manufacturer's ads. Please warn mac users not to believe the ads.

I use the SpaceExplorer with CatiaV5 R19. It makes modeling and drafting easier and faster. The only problem I have is that with Catia R19 you can not save the setup for the hot keys.

This has completely changed how I use 3D design software, all zooming, panning, and rotating is done with the SpaceExplorer in my left hand, with drawing and clicking done with a mouse in my right. Once you learn it, it's the fastest, smoothest way to move around a 3D assembly.

Comments about 3Dconnexion SpaceExplorer 3D Mouse:
I upgraded to this mouse from the 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse Plus. I use these mice primarily for Autodesk Inventor and I have found it to be an essential tool when working in that environment.
The SpaceExplorer has far better 3d grip than the SpaceMouse. The mouse is now more ergonomic but the grip could be larger. The "on device" sensitivity adjustment is great. That way you can easily adjust the level of precision when working in different assemblies.
Great product. A must have for Autodesk Inventor.

I use the explorer with VectorWorks 2008 and ESPVision. The ability to quickly change views is a great time saver. I think after I get done screwing around it will improve my productivity. The controls are easy to learn and adjust as needed. It is sometimes very sensitive, a bump on the desk will change your view!
