O Plug-In UTX-P1

I purchased two of these kits for use in Broadcast ENG.

I have used a Lectrosonics 195D kit for years which finally died. This time around price was more of an issue and it came down to the UWP series or Sennheiser G3.

One consideration I had was the mounting options on a full size XDCAM camera. Wanting to use a BEC box to mount the receiver(s) I had to consider the location of power switches and having to remove the receiver from the box to turn it on and off etc. The decision came down to something as simple as that over the Sennheiser. The UWP gear has power switches on the side rather than under a flap which makes it a lot quicker to use and less prone to breakage.

Each piece of the kit is quite small and has a robust metal casing. It would be nice if Sony included slip pouches for the beltpack transmitters just to protect them. Although a leatherette case is included for the plug on transmitter it would be good to have a belt clip on this pouch. I used my Lectrosonics one all the time to carry my hand mic.

After using the good quality spring loaded belt clips on Lectrosonics belt pack transmitters the ones that are on the Sony UWP series are junk. I expect I'll be replacing these every few months.

A lot of reviews focus on the transmission range of these kits versus the Sennheisers. Frankly, I dont care about such things, as long as you can get 100 feet on the odd occasion thats all that matters. Rarely will most people use a radio mic over a greater distance when using it with a camera. I havnt physically tested the range, but so far, for the work that I do, I have not had any dropouts or need to change frequencies.

Sound quality is very good, however, I have noticed some compander noise which you can hear when a person pauses during an interview for instance. For ENG work this isnt really a big issue, and I have found it more common when using my Electrovoice RE50 with the plug on transmitter rather than the beltpack with the ECM77. Whilst the output of the receiver is at mic level, I have had good loud signal through the camera.

There has been a lot said about the included lavalier mics. Whilst they arent that great, they do the job. At this price point I really dont think you can expect much from them. You are really paying for the transmitters and receiver. If you want good lav mics you need to buy something like a Sony ECM 77 (which I purchased seperately at the same time), Countryman or Sanken. The ECM 77 would be about 3 or 4 times the cost of the included mics, and 3 or 4 times the quality.

It's a shame Sony dont offer the option of external powering of the receivers. It would have been good to power them from the 12 volt dc output of the camera. I think I will buy some spare battery sleds and make up something myself.

Changing the settings involves switching the unit on whilst holding down the set button, changing the setting and switching the unit off for it to take affect. This is a bit of a pain, but once set, rarely does a setting need to be changed.

Whilst not an issue at the moment, I think the captive antennas could eventually cause a problem. It would be nice if they could be removed for storage or to be replaced if damaged.

The output cables for the receiver are good quality 1/8" screwlock plugs to Neutrik XLR's. I'm not a fan of the jack plug style, but again for this price range, one has be make concessions.

It would have also been nice for Sony to put rubber plugs on the headphone sockets on the receivers. I have no use for the headphone feature and an open socket isnt good when out in the elements.

Despite some of the nit picky comments that I have made. The UWP series is extremely good value for money, which makes those minor issues forgivable. Sound is clear and accurate when used with quality microphones. The units are solid. There are versatile third party mounting options and batteries last reasonably well. Overall a very good product.

The sound is good. The range is excellent. I don't like any of the connectors. But at least they screw in. The microphone isn't the greatest in the world, but for this price is an excellent value.

This would be my 3rd Sony units after my 1st Sony unit purchased 4 years ago and still running good and strong. I had some other brands (Azden) they are good also except the plastic covers broke down after repeated use.

            Comments about Sony UWP-V6 Wireless Plug-in & Lavalier Microphone Package (42/44 - 638 to 662MHz):

This Is An Outstanding Piece Of Gear In Both Audio Quality And Build Construction. It Is Pricy Compared To Other Wireless Microphones, But in My 35+ Years Of Experience Of Using All Types Of 2 Way Radio Equipment, I Know You Get What You Pay For. This Outfit is Well Worth it's Price.
The Range is Ridiculously Long (Think 200+ Feet Outside Without Drop-Outs)With The Belt Pack, And Even Longer With The Plug In Transmitter.
I Am Unable To Tell the Difference With A Wired Connection To My Sure SM-57, And The Plug In Transmitter. Battery Life Seems To Be Excellent
As Well. The System Comes With All The Accessories You Might Need. The Only Addition I Might Make Is A Case For The Belt Pack Transmitter, Mostly Because I Don't Want it To Get Scratched. The Only Con I Can Think Of
Applies To All The Other Systems In This Category, And That's The Lack Of Technical Information Regarding The Belt Pack Transmitter Microphone Input Socket. I Had To Reverse Engineer This So I Can Plug In Other Microphones To This Without Harming The Transmitter. All in All, This Is The Best Purchase I Made Here
At B&H, And I Am Already Thinking Of Buying Another.

Ships with a good lav(ecm44), the old sony shipped with a cheap lav so this saved me $200 because I didnt need to buy one. Solid metal cases. Very quick & easy to to change frequencies or audio levels. Nice line/ mic switch that the old versions didnt have! Very cool monitor jack, plug in headphones to check for signal!

Purchased to use for video production. Great update to my aging WRT-805 system. This kit surpasses my existing system in many areas: build quality - all metal, system response - great reception, great output from the receiver to my recording device. Only complaint is the lack of removable antenna but this can be addressed (if they do get broken) at a later time with smaller antenna my local sony guy can add.

                    Comments about Sony UWP-V6 Wireless Plug-in & Lavalier Microphone Package (42/44 - 638 to 662MHz):

I am professional videographer, and i am faced with challenging situations when it comes to sound. One will find this product exactly as it claims. I decided to buy this UWP-V6, mainly due to its being reasonably priced. Also, i have SONY FX1000 HDV. I thought if i am so satisfied with the quality OF sony why not try their mic system aswell. And believe me, i am really impressed with the mic. As a matter of fact, i just received it in time to cover a wedding reception. as a matter of fact, i tried it right there at the reception.its so easy to use. no problems. I reviewed the footage and i am very satisified for sound quality and the range. I walked through 3 doors out in the open of the hotel and still i did not lose the signal. I am really impressed with the signal strength. the distance must be around 250 feet away from the camcorder.

I had good luck with this wireless mic during an outdoor event. I had no interference (the channels were easy to set) and could pick up great sound at about 100 yards or more.

Buy extra clips and windscreens as they get lost easily.

I use this product for ENG field production.
I like it very much because it is a very diversity device for reception of high quality sound and very durable. Furthermore, it is light weight, easy to use and the battery usage last longer. The transmitter can be switched from high to low and vice versa. The only thing that is not so great about it is that there is no pouch or a carrier for the UTX-B2 transmitter during use.

I use this to record speakers who want to be able to move around a room. I connect it directly into my camcorder which provides superior sound over the built-in mic. The fact that you can run the lavalier and the handheld mic provides great options.

I also connect it to my computer and have been able to record much higher quality sound that way as well for voice overs and podcasts.
