I use these for archiving clients files and for backing up my working hard drive. They are great because they stack well and are easy to switch between drives. The best thing is the Esata port. It's just like having another internal drive, only I can unplug it and put a different one in for a different client. I haven't had one fail me yet. (Knock on wood). So far they have performed very well.

We now have a number of this model drive in use in our public access TV facility for video editing project file storage. They are reliable, quiet and trouble free. However, I do not like the power cord attachment solution. It becomes disconnected all too easily. LaCie has indicated they are aware of the problem and their latest versions deal with this but our units use the older style power connector.

I bought the Lacie hard drive so I could back up my smaller external hard drive and also use it to save the infinite flow of video files I edit month to month. After one month of heavy use it has been great to me.
I say "make sure to read first" because other reviews would sometimes say the drive didn't work right on a PC (this is most likely due to the fact that these users did not format their drive properly to be compatible with their PC.) but I cannot confirm that 100%. But so far I have been using my Lacie on a Mac only, and formatted for a mac to begin with, and I have not encountered a problem yet. The size of the drive vs. the price is unbeatable, and the design just makes it the most beautiful piece of hardware I own (I've already received a few "ooh's & ahhs" about it.) The true test of any hard drive is the test of time, so for 1 month I cannot tell if this drive will survive 5, 6, 10 years, who knows. But judging by it's current performance I feel my files are safe and ready at all times.
I'd say the only drawback is the drive does not have firewire 800, but it's already got USB, 2 Firewire400's, and eSata, so I'm not complaining (since I'm sure the choice of no Firewire 800 was to lower the cost, which I'm all about.). Luckily a firewire 400 --> firewire 800 cable is included to plug into computers with an 800 port. If you need 500GB of reliable space, buy this drive. Just make sure you format your drive correctly before using it on your PC and/or Mac.

As a fan of LaCie drives for years it was a no-brainer to give this drive a spin. Known for their plug and play setup, I was happy to see LaCie come thru w/a small footprint/large capacity drive complete w/e-sata capability. I've had issues with some of their drives not lasting that long (2 drives failed in less then 2-years each). My suggestions is to buy new (not a 90-day refurb like on some sites) and get the 3-year warranty. I would also suggest that if you have lots of valuable, non-replaceable data, get a spare back up drive in case your main drive goes down. The cost is far cheaper than losing everything.

Well deserved 5 star. I am a professional photographer/videographer and always am needing more space to store files and backup data. This hard drive is small, extremely fast, stackable, and best of all....simply gorgeous.

I own a video production company in Cancun Mexico, HDV CANCUN. So far, i am very happy with this product, i like its design, and its noise-less attitude.
Eventhought Lacie has had made me crazy with its problems after the 3 year warranty, i still bought this one because of its appearence. Remember to back up your information, because you never know when your Lacie will not work again.
