I've shot pro video and stills for 30 years and this is the head I'm using on 90% of my work now. With the price of so called "pro" equipment the way it is, I would expect to pay double the amount for this quality. I mounted it on my old 3046 tripod thats been in the corner for 10 years and it is now my main tripod for my Nikon D300 and DX2.

I use this head with my gitzo carbon fiber legs to support my 4x5 monorail camera. It is a strong tripod head, the grips on the handles are a good shape. Brand new, one gear was tighter than the rest of them, making it more difficult to make fine adjustments. This is frustrating and I am hoping that with more use, the tight gear will get more lubricated/looser.

If the head is overly tight, use the adjustment nuts under each control handle. Note: they aren't shown on the instructions. Once adjusted this head is far better than the one it replaced.

this head is made for control freaks and is heavy enough to stabilize the lightest tripod.

Comments about Manfrotto 229 Super Pro Head - Supports 26.5 lbs (12kg):
its easy to adjust and holds well, but the position of the longer handle is awkward if you shoot a lot of vertical shots in studio. basically, the knob hits right at throat level. this wouldnt be a problem if you could swap it out for a shorter one but those two aren't interchnageable

Definately not the lightest piece of equipment in the kit, but well worth it for the quality. Very easy to make minor adjustments with comfortable grips. Grouped with Manfrotto 190XPROB base makes for a very nice tripod. Biggest benefit for me was confidence in this setup to hold a reasonable weight in almost any position, even when in some comprimising spots shooting landscapes.

This is probably the best, professional tripod head I have ever used. It effortlessly holds my DSLR and each handle turns and tightens very easily. The bubble levels are great to make sure you have a level camera, especially for someone who struggles with a getting a level horizon. I have used other, less expensive heads, and have been dissappointed with them all. Either they are too hard to move or not strong enough to hold my camera. The 229 Super Pro Head from Manfrotto blows them all away.

Serious hobby with good equipment. Shots mostly from tripod.
Digital photography with heavy equipment. Secure camera mounting. Fast flip from landscpe to portrate. Able to level camera without leveling the tripod in most cases. (only pan shots requrie tripod leveling)
Handles could be better positioned for shooting up at angles above 25 degrees

I actually bought this head to replace one I had exactly like it - which I lost due to unfortunate circumstances. This is a very high quality head, with excellent, precise control because of the three separate adjustments. Can support medium format (like a Mamiya RZ67) and digital SLR cameras, no problem.

I purchased this for my digital camera over 4 years ago and I'm now getting ready to use it on my new L.F. Walker 4X5 Field Camera. This thing is rock solid. When you tighten the knobs in any position, they stay locked with no slipping. It works just as good as the day I purchased it. I've used other light weight tripods and heads and they just don't stand up to the high winds and harsh conditions I encounter like this does. A little on the heavy side and a little awkward to carry, but the 229 Super Pro Head is the one I always choose even on longer hikes.

Rock solid head with smooth controls throughout. I bought it for use with large format cameras but it works great in medium format and pro 35 mm DSLRs.

This head is rock solid and the best head I've used out of many over the years. It is heavy duty and silky smooth in all of it's functions. Match that with 3 levelers and you've got an awesome professional head. I've matched it up with the 055XPROB Tripod Legs and I'm happy as a clam!

A very nice head! A little sticky right now, but I'm sure that will clear up with extended use. Lots of levels to avoid uneven/unlevel shots. Degree markers are an added plus. Quick release plate is very sturdy and functions well! All-in-all, I am very pleased with this product!! It should last a long time!
Just make sure not to get some wussy tripod legs... this thing is a beast! (I used the Benro A-428n6 legs which I guess is discontinued now...) Although, if you are a serious buyer, you should already know that...

I'm a photo major in my final semester and this head (and the tripod I got with it) have been wonderful. The levels are really helpful and I love hex-plate heads because I can interchange them with my schools equipment.
