Our Bogen 503 fluid head came with one of these and we bought another as a spare in case of emergency. Using these we get a few extra inches to balance various camera rigs properly on the tripod head - they also allow us to swap out cameras easily. We just leave these plates attached to the cameras.
The only thing I'd change is that Bogen use better glue to keep the rubber bumpers attached to the plate - they tend to fall off or bunch up. Thankfully, a little superglue makes it right.

Imagine my surprise when one of the screws came missing on this quick release plate while in storage. When plan A disappeared, I had to use my more modest mount on "tripod B." Lessons learned. I bought two extras of these babies, and won't be screwless again.

Great thing to have a spare of...the plate SHOULD be on either the camera OR the tripod-if it's not, you're in trouble. [$] is a small price to pay for something you REALLY NEED. For the want of a nail, the horse was lost!

Comments about Manfrotto 501PL Sliding Quick Release Plate with 1/4"-20 & 3/8" Screws:
I got this plate packaged with the Manfrotto MH055M8-Q5 tripod. I have to admit, I'm surprised at all the stellar reviews. This plate has a few serious issues:
1) If you take the large screw out (which I did as it's not necessary to mount to my MKii, the small one is VERY easily lost.)
2) Maybe not an issue with mounting for video cameras, but with my MKII the lens blocks the knob that tightens the plate in most positions. I can make it work if the camera is set all the way to the back.
Since I don't shoot with a video camera, I can't talk about it's utility for those users. But I think it's very shortsighted of Manfrotto to include this as the release plate for a head specifically marketed for DSLRs.

Buy it if you have some zoom glasses with that support ring on it.
It will save you time and efforts by not having to assemble the plate on the camera or on the support ring so often.

Comments about Manfrotto 501PL Sliding Quick Release Plate with 1/4"-20 & 3/8" Screws:
I love this little plate. But whenever I head out to an on-location shoot, this is always the piece that gets left behind - either on another camera or in another bag... so I finally just broke down and bought a handful of them! It was the best decision I ever made and it was well worth the price.

Comments about Manfrotto 501PL Sliding Quick Release Plate with 1/4"-20 & 3/8" Screws:
The plate slides in the head - great idea allows better camera balance and some macro adjustments.
The movement is pretty rough but that's a small problem, after all it's not a focusing rail. The rubber pads peal off when camera is attached tightly. Large lenses need two screws or a pin or lip that would prevent rotation and unscrewing. The small pin in front of the plate does not work. The screws have heads that are too big and cannot be used simultaneously on my Minolta 300mmf2.8.

Comments about Manfrotto 501PL Sliding Quick Release Plate with 1/4"-20 & 3/8" Screws:
Good quality and relatively cheap, considering the prices of plates from other manufacturers. I use this plate on a 60D with a Sachtler FSB-4 head, instead of the factory Sachtler plate, which is too long for keeping attached to a DSLR in the field, in my opinion.
