The Manfrotto 165MV is an "on-ground" spreader for tripods with spiked feet. This device has variable diameter width adjustment to accomodate tripods from 31" to 51" in legspread.

I'm a Television News Stringer. With that said I have to say this spreader is garbage after 6 months of use mine broke, the plastic the plastic broke in half where one of the spreader meets in the middle.
This is the second thing from manfrotto to break I'm beginning to think their products are over priced garbage.

Light weight, easy to install and stabilizes the tripod. We use it on our heavy duty jib tripod. This is the second one we've bought though because the first one broke when the jib fell off a doorway dolly because the students forgot to tie it down. Wish there was more metal and less plastic.

This spreader is great for switching between photo and video heads/work. My only beef is whilst on the tripod the legs do not fold in fully and so it is bulky at the bottom, I have to remove it from the tripod to travel with it, also it makes the tripod much heavier, which is a good thing for stability, also when you lift your tripod to reposition the spreader falls downwards in the middle! which is a pain, actually that's 3 beefs! but still I'll keep mine!

The ground spreader is easier and faster to breakdown and set up than the mid spreader. It adds more stability to the tripod. However, it is made from plastic and I have to be a bit careful at times.

This makes it a lot easier to break down my tripod! Just stick your foot underneath, and lift up! Pulls the legs in just great. Also great for when I raise my tripod very high, as I can spread the legs to add more stability! Yeah, I wish it wasn't plastic, but what can ya do. I've also found that after I have extended the spreaders all the way, trying to slide them back in can be a bit challenging. I guess they get caught on some plastic bits when fully extended. Sometimes a good kick works, sometimes it doesn't. The spreader also has marks/lines on it, so that you can spread each side to the same length. Nice feature!

If you're using a mid-level spreader, switch to this one. It offers more stability for the tripod and the cost is worth it. When folded on the tripod, this spreader adds a couple of inches of length, so it may make for a tighter fit in your tripod case.
