The Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Lens is an ultra wide angle, short zoom range lens specifically designed for use with digital SLR cameras. The slightly shorter zoom range of this lens over the popular and award winning 12-24mm lens makes it possible to maintain optical quality even at wide-open apertures. This lens features a fast constant aperture of f/2.8, and provides a focal length equivalent to 16.5-24mm in 35mm format.

As part of the AT-X line, this lens is designed to provide excellent optical quality, and offers advanced features like the WR (Water Resistant) front element, its One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism, that allows the photographer to switch between AF and MF simply by snapping the focus ring forward for AF and back toward the camera to focus manually. There is no need to change the AF-MF switch on Nikon cameras and a 9-bladed aperture. The excellent lens for short closeup photography.

Note: This lens is NOT waterproof. The 'WR Coating' adds water-resistant protection to the front element only.

Note! Not suitable for 35mm film SLR cameras or digital cameras with image sensor bigger than APS-C size (e.g. D3). AF not supported by D40, D60, D3000 and D5000 cameras.

WR Coating
WR (Water Resistant) coating made of a special compound has been applied to the front surface of the lens through the use of a unique evaporation process. As a result, the lens offers excellent water- and oil-repellent performance and makes for easier cleaning should the lens be accidentally smeared with fingerprints or cosmetics.

Note: This lens is NOT waterproof. The 'WR Coating' adds water-resistant protection to the front element only.

One Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism
The One Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism allows for fast and easy switching between manual and auto focus from any position. This improvement means that it is not necessary to change the AF/MF switch (on the body with Nikon or the lens with Canon) every time the lens is changed from auto focus to manual focus mode.
9-Blade Aperture
The rounded diaphragm opening (9 blades) makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural.

Even though it's a really wide lens, the 11-16 doesn't shine when you "get it all in" in a really wide vista, but rather when you have something in the foreground that is set against a background that is rendered "too small".

That said, the lens is only a teeny bit soft at f2.8 (TOTALLY useable though) and sharpens up nicely already at f4. f5.6 and f8 are just great, no reason to shoot beyond that, as diffraction sets in as early as f11. Distortion is well controlled, there is no problem with falloff from f4 on (even at f2.8 I don't notice it in many photos).

All in all, this is a really sharp lens that takes great photos. You need to come up with new ways to shoot with a lens like this, but it's so much fun to be stretched like this. It's built like a tank (much more solid than the competing lenses from Sigma and Tamron, very much like the Tokina 12-24 f4, too. It's not a great big zoom range, so if you want a lens that strays from wide into semi-"normal" territory... this isn't it. If you want great ultra-wide images, it is.

The only reason I didn't give this lens five stars is that with such a small zoom range it isn't very versatile, but it's image quality is great.

Not as sharp as expected

I've returned the lens as it may have been defective. Left side was blurrier than right side and only sharpened up by f8 or f9. Still not as sharp as the right side.

It is built like a tank and the fixed 2.8 aperture would have been great. Since I've read so many positive reviews of this lens, I'll assume it's a quality control issue with mine and will recommend this lens with reservations. Try to test the lens before buying if possible.

Slight overexposure at 16mm

Comments about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Nikon DX-Format DSLRs:

Got this lens 2 weeks ago to complement my D7000 and my 16-85mm VR lens. This Tokina is remarkably sharp, low distortion, built like a tank, great colour rendition with only a little purple fringing at times, all in all a great lens.
BUT... for some reason at 16mm the photos always come out overexposed by about 2/3 of a stop, even one full stop if stopped down to f/8. If I keep that in mind and purposely "underexpose" when I shoot at 16mm, then the pictures are absolutely superb. Because of that minor flaw and also because of the limited focal range, I am tempted to get the Nikon 10-24... will sleep on it first.

Comments about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Nikon DX-Format DSLRs:

I just got this and have used it for overall shots of a room, e.g., documenting a house being built or shooting a party. The wider aperture is useful indoors. I find the photos having quite a bit of distortion; they do not look quite "real", but I've found some lens corrections for Lightroom. Perhaps this is always true of 11 mm photos taken indoors. Landscapes would probably look great taken with this lens, but have not had the chance to do this yet.

Comments about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Nikon DX-Format DSLRs:

I have recently returned from a trip to Hawaii where I gave the Tokina 11-16mm a serious test run on my D7000 Nikkon. I am usually carrying around a 18-200mm as my "Swiss knife" and a 50mm 1.4 for sports and night shots. I figured that Maui should provide plenty of opportunities to capture scenery and wide landscape shoots, so I decided to add this ultra-wide pick to my bag. Smart move! This is the first non-Nikkon lens I have been using and what a tremendous lens it is! everything I have read about the lens was true. High quality construction. Ultra-wide view at 11mm. Very quick to handle low light conditions and mostly – SUPER sharp throughout the (limited) zoom range. Some of the shots I took at sunset walking into the water up to knees and shooting a portrait of the kids from 2 feet away were voted the best portraits ever by anyone who saw the end photos.

It is a great addition to anyone that wants to add a unique lens to his/her bag. You want regret this decision.

Comments about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Nikon DX-Format DSLRs:

Have only been using it for 2 weeks, but this has already become my go-to-lens. Before getting this lens I mostly shot with a 35mm prime and 16-85mm zoom, while these 2 lens worked well for the range of portraits and landscapes and detail shots I would get, they didn't give me the wide range this lens does and boy did I not know what I was missing.

I take a lot of shots of my 2 year old toddler and what I love about this lens is it is fast and gets all the action in the shot even up close! Works great with my D7000, highly recommend it.

The only issue I have with it is I have found that I have to play with the white balance more than with my other lens, but that is probably because the wide view captures more of a range of lighting sources.

Tried the Tamron 12-24 (returned it) and the Nikon (nice but pricey) in the same range, this was the absolute best buy. I am an advanced amateur photog looking for a specialty lens that can be used mostly indoors, the Tokina 2.8 is the only way to go. Had to give up AutoFocus, but the loss is worth the quality and abilities of the lens.

Comments about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Nikon DX-Format DSLRs:

I haven't had the lens for very long, but so far so good.

It definitely is wide. Although the distortion is 'natural' looking somehow. Its great for portraits of my kids. You can fit a 3 year old entirely in the frame at a distance of 2 or 3 feet (like I said its wide)

The AF uses the old screw type motor so its slow if you're used to AF-S type lenses. That is not really a problem with such a wide lens as you won't be using it for action and the Depth of Field is very deep, so if you're focused close, you're focused.

The glass seems pretty good, its not an ED Nikkor Lens but it doesn't cost as much either.

Comments about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Nikon DX-Format DSLRs:

The Tokina 11-16mm is a solidly build lens that is always in my kit. Although the lens is definatly a specialty lens, I find myself using it constantly. A superwide angle lens in your kit is a must and in my opinion this is the best 3rd part super wide out there and arguably the best including the nikon 12-24.
I do both film and photography with a D7000. When filming in a tight spot or looking to create a special look the Tokina excels because of the 2.8 aperture. The lens works great for awkardly lit sporting events or low light studio shots.

For photography the lens is great for tight situations and special effects alike

The Zoom on it is very short, I pretty much use it for croping and proper framing.

The lens is well built and will really add to your arsenal, and for the price, this pro quality lens is unmatched

This is by far the best ultrawide zoom available for Nikon DX cameras. It's better (and cheaper than even Nikon's 12-24mm AF-S DX and the newer 10-24mm AF-S Nikkor f/3.5-4.5G DX ED!

Actually it's my only non-Nikon lens but I love it ;)

I've been using this for taking pictures of the marching band as it moves through its competition season. Getting pictures of small groups as they warm up and getting the entire line as they march by has been MUCH easier with this lens. As long as I'm not right next to someone, the distortion is not bad at all.

I am a stickler for sharpness and must admit to pixel peeping when testing a new lens. Well, this offering from Tokina more than met my expectations! You can believe all the glowing reviews. And this is from a photographer with 40 yeas field experience, professional industrial, and widely published. Hair splitting sharp in the center even at f/2.8 (after tweaking my d300 AF Fine Tune). Stop down a little and the edges improve markedly. Trust me, this is a much better performer all the way through its range than the Nikon 12-24mm. And Nikon should strive for the Tokina's construction quality throughout its lens line. This is the first off-brand Nikon lens I have bought, and I am not disappointed. It is a true gem.

I picked this lens up for my FS100 for exteriors and landscapes. I've only had a few chances to play with it but so far I've had great results. The distortion is very low for a lens at this price point.

The zoom ring is a little tight for my liking, but that's not really a negative, more an opinion.

This is a great match for the FS100.
