The 500GB ReadyNAS Duo Network Hard Drive from Netgear is a high-capacity network hard drive. It features a Gigabit Ethernet interface, remote file access over the Internet, UPnP AV streaming, and an integrated BitTorrent client. The drive supports Windows, Mac, Linux, and UNIX clients, making it an excellent option for small business networks.

Gigabit Ethernet Interface
The Gigabit Ethernet interface allows users to access data and administrators to administer the drive remotely through a standard LAN connection, making it easy to add to your existing network infrastructure.
RAID 1 Capability
As configured, the enclosure ships with a single physical hard drive. It has an unoccupied drive bay, into which you can install a 3.5" SATA drive of identical capacity. Doing so creates a RAID 1 system, which writes data simultaneously to both physical drives in real time. This creates a realtime backup of your data, ensuring that no data will be lost in the event of a single drive failure.
USB Storage Expansion and Printing
The ReadyNAS Duo features three USB 2.0 ports for expansion. You can connect any USB mass storage device, including digital cameras, external hard drives, flash drives, and memory cards, to these ports to make their data accessible over your network. You can also use the ports to turn the ReadyNAS into a USB print server, or to connect it to a monitoring port of an Uninterruptible Power Supply.
Remote File Access
When connected to an Internet router, the ReadyNAS Duo can be configured to share files via the web. It features security features so that only you will be able to access your data.
UPnP Streaming
The device is complaint with the UPnP standard for media streaming. This allows network UPnP devices to access movies, photos, and music stored on the ReadyNAS. Examples of UPnP devices include the Netgear EVA8000, Sonos Digital Music System, Logitech Squeezebox, Sony Playstation 3, and Microsoft Xbox 360.
BitTorrent Client
The ReadyNAS Duo features an embedded BitTorrent client. This allows you to download files via the BitTorrent protocol, without having to leave your computer on constantly.

Comments about Netgear 500GB ReadyNAS Duo Network Hard Drive:

I've been running this NAS for almost 2 years now with no problems at all! Very easy to set up, couldn't imagine not having it now, that impressed. I basically use it for back-up of my music, video and photo files.

I stream all of my music from it, Logitech's Squeezebox series work with it with ease. Just install SqueezeCenter on the NAS and you're ready to go. The Sony PS3 will also stream music, video and photos from at as well.

The NAS is very sturdy, runs cool, and it's not that loud, occasionally I'll hear it running but not often. I'd definitely recommend it to all of my friends!

Worked right out of the box -- little setup required. Documentation for "additional features" could be better.

Comments about Netgear 500GB ReadyNAS Duo Network Hard Drive:

I did lots of research for a RAID-1 home NAS box, and this little unit hit all the right notes. Very easy to set up out of the box. And, it's also easy to hack/extend for those who know linux (a must for me).

              Positives:
              Sturdy, well engineered box
              Hot swapable dual drives
              Gigabit ethernet
              3 USB 2.0 ports
Comes with one drive (many others are BYOD)
              Easy web interface
              Programmable backups
              Programmable startup/shutdown/spindown
              Root ssh access option
Able to install Debian Linux packages
Sharing support for Windows, Linux & Macs
              BitTorrent client
              Picture sharing
              Music server
Able to upgrade memory without voiding warranty
Good price for what you get

              Negatives:
Can't lock front door to drive access

The only problem I've had thus far is that I can't find a way to install Sun Java for this release of Debian Linux. There are other JVMs however, so this may not be an issue for many.

              Overall:
Wow -- what a great box! This does everything I need and more. I'm running with the included 500 GB drive, but will likely upgrade to dual 1 TB drives. I've upgraded the memory already for very short money. Awesome NAS.
