The ExpoImaging Ray Flash Ring Flash Adapter is a unique flash adapter that will convert the hot shoe flash on your Nikon SB-800 Speedlight unit into a ringlight flash. It is for use on Nikon D300, D200, D7, D50 and D40 DSLRs.

The Ray Flash Ring Flash Adapter simply slips over the front of the flash unit, and will fit any lens with a front diameter of no more than 4". It will replicate the lighting effect produced by traditional, expensive, and heavy powered studio ring flash units.

The light distribution is accomplished through a sophisticated system of internal prisms, reflectors and light-shapers designed to distribute and project the light evenly around the lens. Because the Ring Flash Adapter relies on the hot-shoe flash to generate its light, it contains no electronics, no flash tubes and requires no cumbersome cables. And in addition, TTL operation works exactly the same as with the flash itself.

The Ring Flash Adapter is ideally suited for fashion, wedding, portrait, journalist and macro photography as either a main or fill-in light.

The Ray Flash Ring Flash Adapter results in minimal light loss from the flash's standard output. It does not change a flash's color temperature.
Requires no modifications to your flash unit to mount.

Overall, a decent product especially if you aren't up for making your own ringflash.

It attaches very well to the SB-800 hot shoe flash and acts as a lightweight and easy to use handheld ringflash. Light output is strong and even.

Only complaints are that it is entirely made of plastic which I worry a tad about its durability, it blocks the auto focus illumination light on my D200 and the price just seems too high for what it is.

Otherwise a helpful accessory for photographers.

... and I generally refrain from saying negative things about products. But I bought this flash adapter because it was advertised on ExpoImaging's web site, and I consider their ExpoDisc to be a high quality product. I had this thing out of the box for 5 minutes before deciding to return it. [$]. I would have kept it if that's how much I paid for it.The product quality is very poor. The adapter is so front-heavy that it causes the SB-800 to tilt from it's 0-degree position making the adapter point downwards. So it's neither concentric nor co-axial with the lens. Were they really satisfied with this design when they tested it? The plastic "clamp" is so thin that it looks like it will easily break. The ring is positioned so that it interferes with the focus and/or zoom rings of many lenses.Don't waste your money.

Comments about ExpoImaging Ray Flash Ring Flash Adapter for Nikon SB-800 to D300/D200/D70/D50/D40:

I tried the flash for macro photography on small animals. It gave out enough light, but had some annoying limitations. First, the ring is behind the focus on the lens. So, you have to focus, and rapidly move your hand behind the flash. This was very awkward. Second, it didn't secure onto the lens andequately, and flopped a little. At one point,it actually fell off while I was shooting, even though I had it tightened up well.

This works perfectly! And, you'll will notice that it actually increases the flash output.

It's a little fragile. It's for a speed light, they had to keep it light. Keep the box it came in, store it and transport it in that box.

Excellent light quality! You will totally dig this thing!!

Comments about ExpoImaging Ray Flash Ring Flash Adapter for Nikon SB-800 to D300/D200/D70/D50/D40:

    ● I purchased the RAN 160 model, for use with a Nikon D3000. I also purchased, at the same time, an SB-600 Speedlight to attach it to. The Ray Flash fits perfectly with the supplied wedges, though the instructions on how to use and place the wedges were not given, so it required (frustrating) trial and error to place it correctly, so that your lens is centered within the Ray Flash.

    ● The Ray Flash is extremely light weight, so much so, that its lack of mass makes me concerned that it can easily break or shatter. Unfortunately, no case is provided with the Ray Flash.

    ● The effects on images are fantastic and a more cost-effective way to achieve a ring light effect in your photographs.

    ● So far, I've use it for portraits to create a rich, three-dimensional feel to the images, in addition to a shadow-less, halo-like background. It makes portraits have more character and be more fun!

I recently bought the Ray Flash to use as a main light to shoot portraits of musicians, instead of always using an off-camera sync cord with an SB800. The effect is great-- emulates a much more expensive ring flash set-up and packs a punch. The only issue is when using a shorter lens, there are strange artifacts (which can sometimes be a benefit: [@]). But overall the effect is great-- not as poweful as a full ring set-up, but with a tad bit of post, youre good to go-- [@]

Used with a Nikon d40. The rings fits too low, that all my lens rub, making it difficult to manually focus, and also affects the auto focus as the lens expand. For the light, soft and nice. My last wedding shows a notable improvement over my old omnibounce. Will attach a metal support to raise the ring and let it loose a little bit.

Comments about ExpoImaging Ray Flash Ring Flash Adapter for Nikon SB-800 to D300/D200/D70/D50/D40:

I bought this flash to go with the SB600 flash unit. Now, mind you, I actually had an older Nikon Flash and from the measurements went with the closest matched Ray Flash. Even though close, no cigar. I would recommend to only use with flash that folks have successfully tried and recommend to use.

While the Ray Flash is a bit bulky, it fits on the camera and flash flawlessly. The Ray flash provides an adequate amount of punch to the object you are lighting and you can definitely see a difference between the Ray Flash and a normal Flash unit. Most images are illuminated crisply and look "poppy" and jump off the photo more. Gives a great effect when photo-ing models. However, the lighting can be touchy. Just moving a couple feet can make a definite difference in exposure. But most flashes are like this anyhow. I would recommend purchasing some type of case for it to ease travel.

Some complain about the plastic and are concerned about the cheapness. My personal opinion is this – most things these days are plastic. Which has its ups and downs. And most plastic things work. The cameras of yesteryears can even be plastic and they are still kicking. Workmanship of yesteryears was better, but I think the Ray Flash does the job. I wouldn't say that dropping it a ½ dozen times won't damage it, but take care of it like you would your lighting and it will do just fine. Great price for the pop your images will receive.

The lighting effects that I am getting from the Ray Flash really are different than the other diffusers that I carry in my bag. Many reviews say how light and "cheap" it feels, but to be honest, I wouldn't want anything heavier, as it already puts more pressure on the hotshoe holding my flash. It seems to fit snug on my flash. It is a pain to carry around with you, however, as it is an odd shape.

Wow, this is so cool. I've only had it a few weeks so I haven't had a chance to use it more than a couple of shoots, but I already really like it. Both days I was shooting outdoors in trees with spotty shadowed natural sunlight and using the ring flash as fill and to pick my model off the shadowy background. The ring flash adaptor worked great. It gives very even lighting that is directional and soft. Playing distance and exposure compensation gives enough range to produce both a very glammy look and a very soft ethereal look that is still directional enough to pick out the model from her surrounding. It is pretty sweet. The ring is fabricated from plastic so it is very light, and attaches easily to your flash. They provide a couple of wedges to adjust the fit and play of the flash hinge to help alignment with the lens. It feels a little flimsy, it is a pretty large object to hang off a hot shoe flash. I find I am paying attention to holding the camera to brace the ring and not treat the hot shoe as a structural support. It does not feel very durable, coming out of the box I had the sense that it will not survive being dropped and I am not about to test that. Still, it works well, it is flexible and creative and best of all it does not cost $1200, so I'm very happy.

Comments about ExpoImaging Ray Flash Ring Flash Adapter for Nikon SB-800 to D300/D200/D70/D50/D40:

I'm using this with a D300 and Nikkor 105mm micro VR lens. I wanted a ring flash, but was concerned about the strain that the Nikon R1 wireless system would put on my helicoid. The lens easily fits in the inner cylinder (as does the 17-55mm F2.8). I find the lighting is good and even. ExpoImaging now includes small, rubber wedges to keep the whole thing from pitching forward (as mentioned by another reviewer). Like other reviewers, I think this is overpriced and the attachment hood for the SB-800 is underwhelming. Also, this flash does not collapse or compress. It ships in a shoe box, if that gives you an idea of its size. For the price, you're probably better off just buying a second SB-800 and getting creative with your lighting setup.

Only complaints are that it is entirely made of plastic which I worry a tad about its durability, it blocks the auto focus illumination light on my D200 and the price just seems too high for what it is.
