I use my HA5 HDMI to SD/HD-SDI Video and Audio Converter with my Sony HDV-Z7U while i am on the road shooting Big 12 College Football with Fox Sports. Every weekend I have a different Production truck and not all are able to convert my HDMI to there EVS machines so I travel my AJA HA5 with me to make sure I can transfer all my HD video with no questions thru my HDMI cable. I have been very pleased with my purchace and B&H gave me the best price.

Solid, compact product made for the field.
However; No PSU included, uses a hard to find power connector, input is strictly 5V.
And -- the major drawback; it doesn't support 480P. If you own a Canon 5D Mark II, when you hit record the camera switches from a 1080i to a 480P output. With the AJA HA5 this results in no output - not good.
If you own a Canon 5D Mark II then buy the Blackmagic Design Mini Converter HDMI to SDI (available on B&H). To enable 480P support you will need to downgrade to the 1.4 firmware, available on Blackmagic Design's website.

Comments about AJA HA5 HDMI to SD/HD-SDI Video and Audio Converter:
We use many AJA boxes and have found them to be rugged and reliable. This HDMI to SDI version is the most stable way to translate HDMI to SDI. DRM is transmitted via HDMI so some signals won't be permitted to pass to SDI with this device.

Comments about AJA HA5 HDMI to SD/HD-SDI Video and Audio Converter:
Well, I bought this item to send picture from my 5D mark 2 to my new HD-SDI Marshall Orchid, and boy did that not work. After a variety of tests before an impending gig I freaked out and called a rental house in Washington DC, called DC camera, (because that's where my gig was near) and they were nice enough to tell me, "yeah that's an hdmi to HD-sdi converter, but for some reason it just does not work with DSLR's" Fortunately they were able to save my life with the Black Magic converter, so all could be well in Joe Fitz land.
Anyway, during my tests it worked fine with my sony Z7u, and I do like it's sturdy compact size...it simply did not work for my multi-camera needs. This item aside i have never been done wrong by aja products. That's why I bought it in the first place.....

I use a Steadicam, and everybody loves my HD wireless Cam-Wave. This converter allows me to use my IDX Cam-Wave SDI HD transmitter with any camera that sticks me with an HDMI output. Also, if you need a backup HD output on RED if the BNC adapter goes wrong. You never know, this gives you options. You have to make a regulated 5 volt cable for it. You could fry without.

What is good:
Does what is says: HDMI to SDI conversion.
It is small
What is bad:
Found some issues with certain colors in certain monitors due to the data range compression. the problem could be due to the converter, the monitor or a mix of both.
Using this HDMI to SDI and the SDI to HDMI from the same brand (Hi5) and a PS3, I could not get any output.
Power supply not included

Comments about AJA HA5 HDMI to SD/HD-SDI Video and Audio Converter:
On the technical front this converter does exactly what it says, convert HDMI to SD/HD-SDI. Although its documented, I thought I would make it clear here in an easy to find place: This converter does NOT convert signals that require HDCP, which is pretty much everything from an HDMI source.
If you have a deck that has an HDMI out, yes this will work, but odds are if you have the card to connect this to then you also already have all the other ways (SDI) to pull in your media.
The main use I can imagine for this converter is to capture game footage from a 360 or PS3. It did allow us to pull in content from an uprezing DVD player over HDMI, but nothing that was HD. We didn't really expect it to, but we thought there might be something undocumented that would allow HD content to pass through. Nope.
Also: this does NOT come with a power supply!! Order that too!!
