I use this for my antique print business (www.stonegateprints.com) and it is working out very well! I was using an aging Agfa T-1200 before but the new Epson leaves it in the dust!
This scanner is great for oversized prints and I am happy with it's performance. I use it with VueScan scanning software because I am used to that and it works very well with it. I was concerned about the speed of the High Speed USB but needn't have been. The scan speed is very good (at least for my needs).
Others have noted that it is LARGE (yes, it is) and NOISY (that too) but I was ready for the size and you just sort of get used to the noise which I don't find overly objectionable anyway. In addition, after the scanner is not in use for a while, it goes into a sort of sleep mode which shuts off the fan, or whatever it is that makes the noise, until you lift the lid which kicks it back on.
All in all, I feel this scanner is a good value, am happy with it's performance
and recommend it for anyone who needs a wide-format flatbed scanner.

It's difficult to find a decent large flatbed scanner nowadays because the demand is very limited compared to 8.5 x 11 scanners.
This one was easy enough to set up and it captures good sharp scans.
But for the price it's remarkable that it is so loud. It's the loudest scanner I've ever owned. I wouldn't mind if the noise was just during the scan (less than 30 seconds), but it remains for about 5-10 minutes afterwards until it automatically goes into Idle mode. Of course you can get round this just by turning off the scanner as soon as you're done.
The lid closes nice and tightly so you don't have to put any book on top to get a good scan that doesn't change tone slightly at the edges.
But the backing under the lid--in an annoying oversight by Epson--is white. If it was black, you wouldn't see the other side of thin pages you scan. (I use a black manilla folder as a workaround.)
For 300 and 600 dpi scans I've had consistent problems with slow loading into Photoshop (CS3) on my iMac. It looks as if it crashes, but if I wait 5 to 10 minutes, it eventually gets into PS. (Don't know for sure if it's an Epson/Adobe/Apple problem.)
I got tired of trying to photograph large documents so forked out the $1,000+ for this big beast. Scan quality is satisfactory despite the noise and speed, so I'm keeping it.

This item is a scanner... we needed a good scanner, from set up to use, it took maybe 10 min. Adding the automatic feeder another min or too. Teaching others how to use it another min. Networking it so that any of our personal can use it, few more min in it self. Scans come out in great quality exactly what we needed.
Overall, you are not gonna spend hours getting it set up and going. And is easy to use, buy why should a scanner be hard to set up.
Be warned when moving it though it is very heavy.
Don't like:
How heavy it is, but well its a high end scanner, such is life
I understand the automatic feeder being extra, but the network card? and it being another 300... just used it on a station and shared it over the preferences.
Color may need some adjusting though, as they seem to come out slightly different

The quality of the scans is great. I scan my watercolor paintings, and this scanner is exactly what I needed. The overall scanner is physically larger than I expected, but I was happy and proud to situate my home office to fit it in!

We are photographer, illustrator and artist and this scanner is the answer to many of our scanning quests. We use it for scanning in black and white, color and documents. We scan old photographs, botanical illustrations, fine pencil work, water color pics; we create collages and scan into Mac and PC for printing or manipulations.

I am an artist and used Epson professional products including this fast scanner to digitize my work, drawings and paintings and effortlessly enhance them in Photoshop CS3. I am stunned at the results and exceeded my expectations. My advice to anyone who value time and quality of their work, do not compromise for anything less. Thank you Epson.

+ Scan 11X14 photographs (2 to 50+ years old)
onto computer for photo editing. Now able to
do things that was not possible when the photos
were made.
+ Takes up a lot of space but that is as
expected.
+ Wish my printer had a scanner this size.

Comments about Epson GT-20000 Flatbed Scanner:
I wrote the review that I've appended to this review about the 10000XL. I just got in a GT-20000 and it has the same exact problem. What's going on at Epson? I've used a 1640XL for years. It is having problems and I decided to upgrade to the 10000XL. I found 2 main problems with this scanner. The first has to do with the quality of the scan. The 10000XL introduces some darkening that is apparent in the white areas of the scanned image. I don't know how to say this better. It looks like there is a dirty film on the glass, but there isn't.The second has to do with the obstacles the engineers put on top of the scanner to make scanning oversized images harder to scan in multiple sections. There is a post sticking up a few inches in the rear. There is also a raised edge on the right and rear sides of the glass. When I got the first scanner in, I thought I simply had a defective item - it happens. [...].The second had the identical problem and I spent quite some time with the folks at Epson on the phone going over it.I do fine art reproduction, so this is a problem for me. If I were scanning office documents, it wouldn't be such a big deal, but then I wouldn't have spent this much for a scanner. If I explained this poorly, that does not mean there is not a problem. I have an all Epson shop, so this is very upsetting. I don't have another replacement for my 1640XL.

We are scanning some old 12X17 newspapers to post on our website through [@]. THis scanner does a great job. Fast, quiet, accurate. We use Mac's and while the scanner software will not work with the Snow Leopard software, we just hooked it up and used the Apple software (Image Capture) to scan it into PDF's. Of course, we could scan it as JPEG's or many other fronts. This is a really great scanner for the price.

I love this scanner! I have always wanted a tabloid size scanner and this one was finally at a price I could afford. It is fast and easy to use. I can scan multiple images at once and now I don't have to stitch my images together in photoshop. I scan and am done. I have bought three of these. Two for my classroom computer lab and one for home.

awesome product, highly recommendable. easy setup, new windows drivers, very smooth operation and no noise during scanning. software that comes with the scanner is acceptable and does the job. the only question mark would be if you have enough place on your desk where to put it since it is huge.

Comments about Epson GT-20000 Flatbed Scanner:
I am a graphic artist and this scanner is a godsend. I use it primarily to scan in black and white line art or sketches into may Mac for color or digital manipulation and it dose this job perfectly. It also handles color images as well as any other scanner I have ever encountered. It maxes out ant an optical 600 dpi but thats the max that I normally would use so I had no need to move into Epson's more expensive large format scanners. It's very quiet for a scanner of this size and has a very smooth and solid sound as it scans.
The only real problem I have is the software that the scanner comes with is a little lacking. I primarily use Image Capture, a program that comes pre installed on Mac OS, to capture images.
All in all I would highly recommend this scanner!

I purchased this a few weeks ago and have been using it regularly. So far everything I've done has come out great. I mostly use it for black and white artwork, especially 11x17 comic book pages. It really does a great job and cleans up alot of stray pencil work as well as the non repo blue that my old scanner always picked up. The biggest thing is the price but alot of the cheaper tabloid size scanners I've seen used for black and white are rather poorly made. This thing is solid (I've had to move it around alot because its huge). Haven't done too much in color but it seems to give a pretty good image. I imagine the higher end Epson tabloid does better color imaging but I'm pretty pleased with the color quality thus far especially compared to those higher end scanner prices.

We have this scanner networked in my office. We have all been very pleased. I know some have remarked on noise, but personally, I don't get it. It's a very quite scanner in my opinion. It was fast and accurate. It's a little slow compared to past scanners we have owned, but we have learned to live with it. We really, have no real complaints about this scanner.
