I use the DHC-H50 for all kinds of landscape and wildlife photography. I use it on a daily basis because it's so quick to take a great shot with it. It's a fantasic offering from Sony, and is very fun to use for just about any type of photography. I've had excellent experiences and luck with past Sony models, and the H50 is no exception.Don't let the non-SLR design fool you into thinking it delivers anything short of outstanding quality. The whole unit is designed very well, and performs equally as well. It focuses fast and accurately, and offers lots of custom options typically not found in digital cameras of it's price range. The ability to take excellent clarity video while utilising the "Super Zoom" aspects of the camera (aswell as NightShot) make it a great video camera aswell.Photos taken with the H50 are exceptionally sharp, all the way to %100 crop. Colors "Pop", and the many intelligent noise reduction and detail restoring features it includes make for some excellent photos when coupled with it's now "Intelligent" JPEG compression algorythm. Almost no detail is lost, but file sizes are kept down in the ~3.2MB range at 9MP.I could go on and on for longer than I should about how every part of this camera out-performed my expectations, but I will try to keep it short, and informative.I really can't think of too many negatives - every aspect I thought might be so-so, or not very well done turned out to be far above my expectations, and above average compared to most all cameras in the "Super Zoom" range. The only minor discrepancy is that at the extreme edges of some photos at wide-angle, and even on some telephoto range shots, there is minor amounts of chromatic abboration and a slight decrease in focus quality - which isn't bad considering the 15X zoom it has built in. It takes abnormal circumstances for these effects to be made noticable.Aside from that, everything about it is great, and I don't feel that anyone buying this will be disappointed - as long as they don't expect the near perfect performance of a $2500 DSLR camera...If you want to see what this camera can do (the H50 can actually do more and offer better performance than the ones documented at this site) - visit [@]

...I'm ambivalent about this camera. I loved the earlier version (the DSC-H2) which I'm still using, but decided to replace it because the viewfinder isn't working well.
About the camera:
I bought the camera to have an all-purpose camera that is light enough to take backpacking (which my digital SLR with all it's lenses isn't). It's a little bulky, but fairly light (although it feels sturdy) and it still gives me the versatility to take long-distance wildlife shots or macros of flowers in virtually the same moment.
The camera takes excellent photos, but is not a huge change from the earlier version of this camera, even though it has half again as many megapixels. If the ISO is left on auto, as it is when using the fully automatic modes, I find the photos can be noisy. I recommend using the adjustable settings, like the "P" program and setting the ISO on 80 or 100 to keep noise level to a minimum. This camera contains settings for in-camera noise reduction, which I don't use since I prefer using computer software for noise removal if I think it's necessary. This series of camera excels at outstanding macros. The image stabilization works well on the zoom, and long distance photos taken with the zoom are generally very good.
The menus are extremely easy to see and navigate, in fact I've barely read the instruction manual because it is so self-explanatory. This series of camera offers some manual controls including shutter and aperture settings, which is great for more advanced users. The optical viewfinder mirrors the view through the lens and is clear and sharp enough to compose a photo, or to make sure you got the optimum shot. Many cameras are doing away with their optical viewfinders, much to the detriment of outdoor photographers. It can be hard to compose a decent photo in bright sunlight using an LCD alone. However, the LCD on the DSC-H50 is large and easy to see, and can be positioned up or down, which is nice when taking a photo at an awkward angle or close to the ground. Unfortunately, it does not swivel or enable storage with the LCD hidden. The display seems extremely vulnerable to damage as the glass surface is exposed all the way to the corners and is not recessed at all.
Again, I really wish this camera would offer a choice of image formats instead of only jpeg.
The thing that really bothers me about this camera and the main reason for the 3 star review, is the fact that Sony made the accompanying ring/hood in a non-standard size (74mm). The newer flared end design is an improvement over the old ring, since it means no lens vignetting at wider angles, but it seriously irritates me that Sony couldn't have made the opening to fit a standard 72mm filter. This means that the reasonably priced Hoya or Tiffen filters will not fit, and that you must buy the costly Sony brand if you want a filter on your camera. I'm not about to fork out the dough to buy non-standard size SLR quality Sony filters for what is basically a point and shoot camera, especially when they might not fit anything else in the future. I use this camera for my work as a natural resource specialist and spend most of my waking hours outside in very dusty environments, I use a filter at all times to keep dirt out of the zoom lens. I have not been able to use the camera as much as I normally would, since I'm having problems finding the filters I need. I managed to find an inexpensive off-brand 74-72mm step down ring (made by Bower for Sony products), which hopefully will fit the Hoya filters I just ordered, since both the UV and polarizer were less than half the price of the Sony Polarizer. I also won't be able to use the $120 Sony telephoto extension I bought for my other DSC-H2 camera, which is a further irritation. At least I can use it as an extension on my Canon 70-300 SLR lens (yes, it actually works.)
Sony's apparently increasing level of specific and non-interchangeable accessories will definitely make me think twice about buying another Sony point and shoot camera, or even an SLR for that matter. They make a great product, but I won't buy from them if I am forced to purchase a whole new set of accessories every time they upgrade a model. There was no way to find information about the base size of the hood and ring for the DSC-H50, but there was no reason to assume that the opening of the ring would be anything but standard. I mistakenly thought I'd be able to use the accessories I had already purchased for my previous Sony Camera by using step-up step-down rings. Of course with my new camera, I now find the opening around the camera lens where the base of the ring screws in appears to be 60mm (another non-standard size) instead of 58mm as my old Sony was. Therefore, I can't just screw on the ring set-up from my DSC-H2 that I had planned to use as a backup since there is currently no step up ring for that Sony-specific size.
I'll think more kindly of this camera when I get some filters that will work, and I can actually take it in the field and put it through it's paces, but that won't change the fact I won't buy another Sony camera unless the accessories go back to standard sizes.

If you take shots of items close to the ground such as flowers the tilt viewer is great. Along the same line the Bright LCD viewer is a help. The eyelevel viewer is especialy handy in catching distant views such as a bird on a branch which often requires a quick location decision to get the picture.

I HAVE THIS CAMERA ABOUT 2 MONTHS IT TAKES GOOD PICTURES WITH NORMAL LIGHTING BUT NO SO GOOD IN LOW LIGHT, THE BATTERY DOESN'T SEEM TO LAST VERY LONG EITHER SO I WOULD RECOMMEND BUYING AND EXTRA BATTERY, I BOUGHT THIS CAMERA BECAUSE IT WAS MADE IN JAPAN AND I LIKE THE BALANCE OF THE CAMERA AND THE SIMPLISITY OF USE. I ALSO LIKED THE 3" LCD SCREEN BUT BECAREFULL IT IS EXPOSED AND CAN EASILY GET SCRACHED AND DAMAGED. THERE IS NOTHING TO PROTECT THE LCD SCREEN.
ALL IN ALL I LIKE IT AND AM HAPPY WITH MY PURCHASE.

I use this product to photograph children, places on vacation, parties, etc. The colours on beaches and even in interior are very beautiful. The only thing that I don´t know yet is if there is some resource for photograph a person moving a little bit. I tried to photograph a clow in a show and it didn´t looked good.

I have a toddler and needed something to shoot quickly, but without losing quality. I found both features in this camera. I traded up from a Powershot, which I was very unhappy with and found this to be much better choice. I'm not very camera savvy and this one is easy to use and I feel a great camera for the price.

I really like this camera. The setup is extemely easy. Using it is also very easy. The camera can be used as a point and shoot camera for those not into cameras, or you can control as much as you would like. One of the best features, besides the zoom, is the single button to reveiw all your pictures. My wife really loves that. I like that the Sony software only dowmloads pictures from the last time and not all the same pictures again. I have a 4gig card and it helps only downloading the last group of pictures.

I use this camera for wildlife; for birds; for horses and because it is so light weight it's easy to carry anywhere. Even snowmobiling! The 15X does a great job bringing the subject up close. I am an amateur and find this camera very adaptable to my needs for creating professional type pictures. Because it only has the one lens you don't have the flexibility of multi lenses.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H50 Digital Camera (Black):
I'm an casual user just moving past a point & shoot camera. I wanted a simple camera with a better zoom than my Canon Sure Shot, that didn't cost an arm & a leg. When I found the DSC-H50 I knew it was the one. Enough manual adjustments that I can learn to take GOOD pictures and still a simple point & shoot for when I don't want to think.
I've had it for about a month and the manual settings have been very easy to figure out. Even for someone who has never set an f-stop in their life. The camera is lightweight, but sturdy and I just want to take it everywhere with me. The zoom is just what I was looking for and the action sports setting is great for clicking on dogs and horses. The burst setting is perfect for pictures at horse shows and capturing the entire approach and jump over the fences.
What I don't like is the proprietary memory stick and battery. Expensive! Especially since I still have a couple unused Scan disks and AA batteries. Like many other reviewers have noted, the lens cap popping off all the time is annoying, but for me it's a minor thing.
Overall I love this camera and can't wait to go on vacation and come back with great pix.

Im not a professional, but I love taking pictures as a hobby. I've found this camera to be perfect for my needs. The good price for the good quality is hard to beat. Nice camera to have as primary or secondary. Great features for the price. Lightweight and with its 15x zoom it is great to use on a trip when you don't want to lug around all the lenses with your SLR.
Takes good shots and provides nice pictures. Used it more then my Canon 20D on a recent trip.
