The Panasonic FS-100-250 by Focus Enhancements is a direct-to-edit (DTE) digital video recorder designed specifically for the Panasonic AG-HVX200 P2 camcorder. The FS-100-250 is armed with a 250GB hard drive which can record up to 250 minutes of DVCPRO HD 1080p footage.
The device records all DVCPRO50/HD footage to Panasonic's standard MXF file and can be hooked up directly into your non linear editing system via FireWire. The benefit of direct-to-edit recording is limitless. After recording your footage, simply hook the drive to your computer and you are ready to start cutting. This workflow can be very helpful for news gathering, where broadcast ready footage is time critical.

Comments about Panasonic FS-100-250 250GB Portable DTE Recorder:
I have had free access to a friends HVX 200 for some time, but never took advantage of it because I shoot docmentaries and he had only one 16gig P2 card. I cannot deal with the laborious P2 card copying and need to shoot for hours at a time in the field. At my urging he bought the 250 gig firestore and it has been a godsend.I recently shot two 2-hour interviews recording directly to it and it was flawless. It was easy to setup and use with very little manual reading. And the best part- it records in QT format and drags directly into FCP!!!!!![$] for 250 gigs its about 1/4 the cost of P2 cards and easier to use.

Comments about Panasonic FS-100-250 250GB Portable DTE Recorder:
Shooting with HDX900, some clients have asked for P2 and the FS100-250 is great add-on to the camera and the client has found it easier than having to continously download full casrds to make space for recording. Panasonic has also designed the pairing to allow for tape backup while shooting in case there is a hard drive problem.

Comments about Panasonic FS-100-250 250GB Portable DTE Recorder:
If you don't mind having something extra connected onto your camera, then this will be a good buy for someone who love to shoot in DVCPRO HD. The P2 cards are expensive and doesn't provide many gigabytes to work with. Nothing could be worst when you buy an HVX200 and not able to shoot your projects in HD because of gigabyte spaces. Although the p2 cards are slick and minimize less things being attach onto your camera; I would still recommend going with a FS-100-250 because it will save you time at onsite shoots and for logging and transferee. You can even edit your video from the unite itself in post production.
Comments about Panasonic FS-100-250 250GB Portable DTE Recorder:
The amount of storage is great per cost, but the thing comes with a manual that is thicker than the HVX camera I bought it for. Worse, is that it has a fan built in that sounds like a computer is in the room and it only goes from loud to louder as it gets hotter. If you're shooting a long conference where your audio is coming in a direct feed from a distant mike, you're fine, but for on set production, it's cumbersome too.
